5 out of 5 eggsWorking in a somwhat unique situation

Pros: cost
respectable size
runs pretty cool
runs quietly
it includes software for both Windows and Mac

Cons: clicks once or twice when starting up (makes me shiver every time)
only USB connections (I recommend this device as a back up drive not a daily use drive.
it includes software for both Windows and Mac
it does not come with a ham sandwich

The device came formated FAT32 for the best compatibility across Apple/Windows/Linux however this is pretty much a lowest common denominator file system. It does not all support the features of HFS+ or NTFS or EXT3.

Other Thoughts: I have a multi user Linux system and single user Apple system that I intended to back up to this drive. To make sure I could make the most of hard-links and preserving user and group attributes I decided to use native Apple and Linux file systems.

On my Linux box I plugged in the drive unmounted it and used gParted to split the drive into 2 equal partitions. I left the first one unformatted and formated the second one EXT3. Then I plugged it into our PPC MacBook Pro that is running Leopard. (that's OSX 10.5?) We used the Disk management utility to format the first partition in HFS+ Journaled (same as the laptops disk)

On the Mac, "Time Machine" immediately asked to use the HFS+ Partition and has had no problem using it. (does not mount the Linux side)

On my Ubuntu Linux box I am successfully using "BackInTime" to back up in a way that is quite similar to the way "TimeMachine" works, except with a bit more configurability. (it mounts the Mac side but read only)

4 out of 5 eggsNot as quiet as I hoped

Pros: It works fine with Mac OS and with TimeMachine backup. I let TimeMachine reformat the disk and it was usable in minutes.

Cons: Not as quiet as I was hoping for. Flared out design may appeal to some, but not to me. Cooling don't seem to be designed for horizontal positioning of the drive. I would have preferred software on a CD rather than on the drive, to make reformatting less "destructive".

Other Thoughts: This disk is compatible "out of the box" with both Windows and MacOS because it is formatted with FAT file system. FAT is slower than NTFS, however.

5 out of 5 eggsRecommended

Pros: Item: Come exactly as advertised (for those who don't know, 640GB hard disk means 640.000.000.000 bytes, this drive has 640.132.382.720 bytes). Quick formatted to NTFS, filled ~70GB directly without any problem. It's been on for 4 hours now without any problem. Haven't tried the backup software though, since I don't feel that I need them (for now).
Newegg: Arrived on time, peanuts packing.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: It's not even a day, I know. I will update this review if anything significant happened :)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Good transfer rates, quiet, sleek looking, decent included software.

$53.99 shipped after last weeks discount code!

Cons: 596GB, I figured it would be closer to 620GB.

Other Thoughts: I'm using it with Windows 7 RC x64. Plugged it in, drivers installed automatically. Transferred the included software off the drive. Formatted to NTFS. Took it for a spin. = approximatly 3 minutes.

To all the people who are complaining that it is for a Mac, please edit your tech knowledge to "1-Low understanding" where it belongs. kthxby

The included software works great if you don't already have something else. I personally am using this drive for photo back-up, so I'm manually moving the folders.

5 out of 5 eggsDefinately A Recommended Buy!

Pros: 1) It's sleek and elegant design has my college dorm mates giving great comments on its "pimpness"
2) With respect to the hard drive size, probably the best deal you'll get out there (with free shipping too!)
3) Fast transfer rates (20-30ish sections for 800mb downloaded movie)
4) 7200 RPM
5) The "Easy-Drive" lives up to it's name- it's simply easy and convenient to use, with little to no hassle on part of the consumer.
6) X-box type design.
7) Cool air-flow (you could tell, because the Japanese are good at electronics)
8) Smaller than I expected. That's a good thing.

Cons: 1) It's not exactly 640GB. It is 596 GB. (But then again, what other external hard drives do not contain this property?)
2) Like other non-extremely portable hard drives, this baby requires an external power source (in addition to the USB you plug in)
3) It is formatted in FTS32, meaning that in order to transfer files that are more than 4GB, you will need to reformat to NTFS using command prompt.
4) USB cord could be longer (a negligible con...)

Other Thoughts: Overall, it's an excellent hard drive. I feel that this was a great bargain. You get an excellent design and manufacture by a Japanese name brand, it looks awesome with its x-box like design, and it's actually pretty small ( i thought i was going to get some big box as an external hard drive that was this big).
