4 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD for my Macbook

Pros: Has been flawlessly reliable since I installed it on my mid-2009 Macbook over a year ago. Looks like it's no longer available on Newegg though... Still, my experience with this would get me to pick up another Hitachi HDD if I needed one.

Cons: I mean... I don't know how fast hard drives are supposed to perform these days. Haven't been up on my "hard drive" knowledge much aside from SSDs. This drive has been pretty fast, seems to do the trick. I wouldn't say it's amazing. Boot up on my Macbook still takes longer than I'd like (recently re-installed the OS, still takes a bit too long for my expectations). But again, works well. I watch a lot of HD movies, have A LOT of pictures, a lot of music... and I often do many things at once with little issue.

Other Thoughts: I'd buy another Hitachi HDD after owning this one.

2 out of 5 eggsPS3 HD Often Fails on Start Up

Pros: Inexpensive
500 GB of Storage

Cons: Fails sometimes on Boot

Other Thoughts: Bought this to increase the storage on my PS3. Most the time it works no issues but every few times I boot up my PS3 now it will say "Hard Drive Not Found" and I will have to do a hard shutdown and reboot.

4 out of 5 eggsIt was great...sort of

Pros: Great price for the amount of memory in a small space. It was of good quality while it lasted.
About a year after I bought the drive it died without any warning. Hitachi's customer service was great. They worked with me, helped me, and replaced my dead drive without hassle. Besides the inevitability that drives do die, the experience was good

Cons: I had the drive in my MacBook. Understandably it ran hotter and consumed more power than the OEM drive because it spins faster. It was a con, but well worth the extra space.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, cheap, 3-year warranty

Cons: Failed after 11 months

Other Thoughts: After 11 months of use and abuse the drive failed: platters spin with loud noise, macbook wouldn't boot, drive wouldn't mount in target mode or external enclosure. Sent it to Hitachi for an RMA, they just sent me one back.

I'm glad I backed up my data just a couple of days before the drive failed.

MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR DATA REGULARLY!!!

2 out of 5 eggsDying now

Pros: Silent...fast. Who cares about those if the drive died in under 1 year. Not good. No wonder newegg stopped caring that.

Cons: I am hoping that I can recover data from that device.
It is dying now...making weird noises.

Price was good when I bought it..

1 out of 5 eggsDied in 6 months

Pros: It worked well while it lasted in my Dell XPS 1530.

Cons: Died after @ 6 months of use. Did not have time to get a backup. Pretty much, I am scr**ed. Don't buy this drive. If you already have it, then always have a backup. Hope this helps.

Other Thoughts: Apple Macbook Pro uses Hitachi. I did not expect this quality from Hitachi. Will see if they can replace it under the warranty.

1 out of 5 eggsFAIL - 14 months. Sudden. Devastating

Pros: Upgraded from stock MacBook 120GB, started out noisier than predecessor but quickly became white noise. Drive ran fast, good cache. Drive still runs, just not any data or recognizable drive.

Cons: Fail!. Noisy. Drive still runs, just not any data or recognizable drive. My fault for not backing up as frequently as Hitachi storage would likely recommend

Other Thoughts: Spend more on a better brand - especially at this capacity and application.

5 out of 5 eggsBig and fast enough

Pros: Dropped this into a Revo 3610 w/ Ubuntu 10.10 as an XBMC/Boxee media box. Goes in fine and seems faster than original HD (also Hitachi).

Cons: I want the 16gbs and the 4gs. I want the white one...

Really none given the price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product for Macbook Pro

Pros: Fast
Does what its suppose to

Cons: Slightly louder
Slightly warmer
Small Decrease in battery life

Other Thoughts: Put this in my MacBook Pro 4,1 Early 2008 version 15in. Replaced the original Hitachi 5200rpm 250gb drive

I've noticed an increase in speed (opening applications, start of OS). Yes it is a slightly louder, but doesn't bother me. It is slightly warmer compared to the original drive, but nothing critical.

I say the speed makes up for the cons. I'm not sure what people are talking about regarding reformatting the drive in a PC or not working in a Mac. But it works fine in mine.
