1 out of 5 eggsBought two, two died

Pros: Worked, till they died.

Cons: They both died. One died after about 2.5 yrs, which I RMAd. The second one died at the 5 yr mark.

Other Thoughts: When I tried to RMA, Hitachi said the drive was out of warranty, had to pull up my NewEgg order history as proof of purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is the longest lasting HDD I have owned.

Pros: I have had this HDD for over 4 years and it's been working great with frequent daily use. I usually have the drive at around 80-90% full all the time, and I usually transfer in/out at least 100 GB of data a month on the drive.

I'll post the current stats for the drive in Other thoughts section.

Cons: I have had absolutely none with this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable & Trouble-Free HDD

Pros: I have been running two of these 1TB HDDs in my Intel Core i5 rig for 3 full years with no problems of any kind. I selected these partly because of good service with Hitachi drives in earlier computers. I have one Hitachi HDD that has been running satisfactorily in and old MAC for just over 10 years.
I don't expect this long life out of all Hitachi HDDs but I have had very good luck with them.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I only hope the reliability demonstrated in older Hitachi HDDs will be maintained in newer drives made by HGST.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great drive while it lasted. I used it as my primary drive with a desktop that was on much, much longer than it was off.

Cons: Died after approximately 3 years and 6 months.

Other Thoughts: I also torrented constantly, and hosted a minecraft server 24/7 for a couple of months.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed after a little more than 2 years.

Pros: Worked well and fast for a little more than 2 years. Fortunately, it came with a 3-year warranty, so I'm going to send it to Hitachi.

Cons: Began failing after 2 years and 2 months. Several important files were lost as a result. It was under heavy use, but it should have lasted longer nonetheless.

3 out of 5 eggsDied in 2 years 10 months

Pros: Nice drive. Stored lots of stuff. Ran this thing with lots of data from lots of video projects.

Cons: upgraded my pc to win 8 (from xp) and after 1 week, I heard clicking hard drive noises when booting, and had boot issues. I isolated this drive, and transferred 100s of gigs of data off it - most transferred quickly, but some parts slowed down to 700kbps. Then I ran some tests and it failed. So, I packed it up in an maxtor 80gb drive box (from a drive that's still working years later) and it's off!

I lost 1 video file that was corrupt (not sure if it was the drive's fault) out of 60k+ files.

Other Thoughts: Just sent it in for it's RMA - had just over 1 month before it was off warranty. $12 postage sounds about right for a new drive.
I just hope I don't get stuck with a cheezy 5400 rpm disk.

Also, their RMA packaging requirements are pretty tight. Be careful and read all the stuff they say before submitting your drive.

3 out of 5 eggsFailed after a year.

Pros: Big, inexpensive, quiet. Worked well while it was in service.

Cons: Only lasted about a year. I have other drives that are older that are still running solidly.

Other Thoughts: It's a good drive, just had a short life.
