Question 1

Is it just a simple plug and play?  Do I have to use any of their software?  Can I just use this as a basic HDD without any lame cloud/local software to deal with?

It is plug and play and can be easily used as a simple external HDD. However, you can install the back-up software provided with the drive and deactivate the cloud upload. My internal HDD died last month and if I had not used the Touro back-up everything would have been lost.

Is this compatable for use with Ipad?

Chances are that it is not compatible unless a few conditions are met:

1- This is USB 3.0 which takes more power than USB 2.0, none the less it still may work on 2.0 plugs depending on the system. (iPad probably not)

2- It needs to be formated with a file system that the iPad can see unless you are sharing it over the network with NFS.  FAT and EFS file formats should both be compatible.

Other than those two major conditions, the only other spec to worry about is the fact that it is a 7200 rpm HDD which might cause issues on battery if you happen to get it connected to your iPad.

How many photos will it hold?

Capacity as measured in # of photos depends of the size. I have photos from less than 300k to more than 500k. Suggest you check for photos, calculate and averge size and divide into the drive's capacity. I do not use mine for photos, but as a external archival storage for backups, so while it has some photos, the make up a very small percentage, so I can't give you an exact number.

Yes I'm pretty sure, it's just a HDD in a enclosure so it should work, personally I found it to be one of the best externals out there, I use it almost every day

I don't have the original hard rive anymore it crashed after 60 days so manufacturer sent me a 750gb replacement that is also about to crash.

I got one of these for Christmas for my daughter to store her games on. No speed tests, but she says it's been working GREAT with already over 50 GB of games on it (they were all downloaded from Steam, so that wouldn't be a test on the HDD speed).

She also says:

As far as gaming goes, everything still loads pretty quickly. Not as fast as my ssd, but sometimes that's a good thing (loading screens have gameplay tips for you to read sometimes, so it's nice to be able to see them in some games) :)
