5 out of 5 eggsUpdate Of Previous Review

Pros: In my previous review of the HGST 7K1000 (2/3/2015), I noted that most other brands of external/portable 2.5" hard drives were 5400 RPM while the HGST 7K1000 is 7200 RPM (I bought several to install in hard drive enclosures to use as very fast portable drives).

After making that statement, I realized the HGST Touro series portable hard drives are 7200 RPM.

So I called Hitachi and asked if the hard drive used in the 1 TB Touro was the 7K1000. They would not comment one way or another (which made me suspect it was not).

Out of curiosity, I purchased a 1 TB HSGT Touro to benchmark and compare it with the results I got for the 7K1000 in an ORICO external enclosure.

The results were interesting (at least to me). The 1 TB Touro, although 7200 RPM, benchmarked no better than the 5400 RPM Western Digital My Passport Ultra or the Seagate equivalent. Using ATTO I measured 122.814 MB/s Sequential Read, and 118.144 MB/s Sequential Write.

These figures are significantly below the Read/Write speeds I measured on the 1 TB HSGT 7K1000 in an ORICO USB 3.0 enclosure.

The access time on the 7K1000 also measured slightly lower than the Touro (lower access time is better).

The 1 TB Touro generally sells for $69.99 on Newegg as does the 7K1000. But Newegg frequently runs the HGST 7K1000 on sale for $59.99. If you can score one on sale, and add $12.99 for the ORICO enclosure, you will have a significantly faster portable drive for only about $3.00 more than the everyday price of the 1 TB Touro.

Alternatively, if you are simply going to install a 7K1000 as a replacement notebook OS drive, or use it in a game console, I have not measured a faster (non-flash cache) 2.5" hard drive. It's a bargain for the money.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: One final thing to consider (if you plan to install a 7K1000 in an external enclosure) -- the 7K1000 comes with a three year warranty while the Touro has a two year warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for PS4

Pros: Comparing this to the drive that comes in a PS4:

Same brand
Twice the size
5400rpm vs this one at 7200rpm

It's all around better and so affordable, it's kind of a shame Sony didn't go for these in the first place. Easy to install and the improved load times are noticeable. I didn't even notice long load times in Bloodborne.

Cons: Nothing to date.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Primary Drive

Pros: Hard to find 7,200 1TB 2.5 drives at this price point. This one works fine as a primary drive in a laptop.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Being used in a Dell Latitude E-6410. Works fine, and easy to install

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: Great Hard drives for the price. I bought two of these to upgrade my 2011 Macmini from 500GB to 2TB. They went in with no problems and once they were setup all worked good! Worth the buy.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to use in PS4

Pros: Very easy to install in Playstation 4
Price
Physical size listed on here is accurate

Cons: none really

Other Thoughts: Good buy to upgrade to a bigger HDD for PS4. I can't say that it is noticeably faster than the 5400 RPM drive that it comes with. It is pretty much plug and go, just save the latest PS4 files to a USB drive and you can be up and running in less than 20 minutes. I put the old PS4 HDD in a PS3, so was able to upgrade both for under $70.

5 out of 5 eggsWarranty Solved

Pros: Harry S. wrote:

** Cons: No mention of warranty as far as I can see.**

Harry, if you click the "Specifications" tab (on the Newegg page for the drive), and scroll down a bit, you will see that the warranty is clearly stated as three years.

Cons: See Pros

5 out of 5 eggsHGST Travelstar 7K1000 HTS721010A9E630

Pros: Its works. I'm no pro, I can change a hard drive and set it up. But as far as running all these test I can't. But as far as seeing any faster speeds or boots, none. Like I said, it works. Gave 5 eggs for that and that its been working.

Cons: I have not see any improvement over my 5400 hard drive. Seems to me, I should have seem faster boots. If there is any I can't tell, seems the same to me. I have a Dell 5537 i7, I upgraded to 16gb memory, Windows 8.1.

Other Thoughts: For me waste of money.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is a GREAT upgrade!

Pros: A noticable performance boost from 5400rpm.
Runs quiet.

Cons: don't have any

Other Thoughts: I bought this particular brand/style because it was the same brand/style as the one I pulled out of an HP Laptop which got ruined (in an accident w/ the laptop). This drive was slightly thicker, but still fit in the laptop. The big thing was that I noticed a big speed/performance jump. Could it be the original HD was holding the performance of my laptop back?

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Performance

Pros: I needed a 1 TB 2.5" hard drive to put into an external enclosure to store System Images and other file backups. I didn't want/need a hard drive with (8 GB) flash cache because all I have seen are 5400 RPM and the way I will be using it, the flash cache would be of little use.

I decided on the HGST 1 TB for several reasons:

It's 7200 RPM and almost all other brand name (WD Ultra, Seagate Expansion, etc.) portable external hard drives are 5400 RPM. This drive also has a 32 MB cache while most others have 16.

This drive is also SATA 6.0 GBs (although I don't know that it adds to the performance since it does not approach the speed limitations of even SATA 3.0 GBs).

Additionally, it got a rave review from one of the more respected online review Websites (I can't mention the name, but the initials are: T T).

When I received the drive I benchmarked it on a SATA 6.0 GBs cable using ATTO and CrystalDiskMark.

The results were surprisingly good. I am accustomed to seeing sequential Read and Write speeds in the 100 ~ 120 MBs range on WD Ultras and Seagate portable drives.

Here are the results for the HGST 1 TB:

ATTO: Sequential Read: 145.889 MBs. Sequential Write: 137.524 MBs.

I then inserted the drive into an "ORICO 2588US3 Tool Free USB 3.0 2.5-inch SATA External Hard Drive Enclosure" and ran the ATTO benchmarks again. The results were similar. Sequential Read: 147.492 MBs. Sequential Read: 146.153 MBs. So the ORICO external USB 3.0 enclosure did not inhibit the performance of the HGST drive at all.

CrystalDiskMark: Sequential Read: 149.8 MBs. Sequential Write: 137.2 MBs.

These are great numbers for a 2.5" hard drive. The HGST is one of the more outstanding 2.5" hard drives I have measured.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: In using it to store System Images, it creates the Image of my OS drive (a Samsung 256 GB Pro 850) in just over 9 minutes (USB 3.0 connection). My Western Digital Ultra 1 TB takes about 14 minutes to create the same Image.

I am completely satisfied with this drive and highly recommend it. I will be buying more.

(BTW, the ORICO external 2.5" case is also great for housing a (say) 240 ~ 512 GB SSD for much faster file transfers.)
