5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Refurb but SMART shows barely 1 day of on-time and no errors. Benchmarks significantly faster than my old stock Toshiba laptop HDD. Good price for 1gb and dropped $16 for 2 year warranty so no worries there. Quiet.

Cons: None that I've seen yet

4 out of 5 eggsCauses of DOAs and Early Fails?

Pros: Works fine and as expected.
Not nearly as noisy as a 7200rpm 3.5" drive

jGecko (aka JohnA)

Cons: Drive does NOT have Seagate's SmartAlign technology for automatic compatibility with older Operating Systems (e.g. WinXP, older Linux, etc). User must correctly install special software in order to run the HDD on such an OS. Also means one cannot blindly use this drive to transfer data to/from older computers...you must know what you're dealing with, and many people won't have the tech knowledge to understand or deal with this issue, and will blame the drive itself.

Decent speeds, but sadly not as fast as Seagate's 1TB 3.5" HDD

Runs warm normally, but quickly heats up in poorly ventilated enclosures...which is pretty norm for HDDs especially in laptops.

Other Thoughts: Re: Reported DOAs and Early Life failures

I suggest many "DOA"s (out-of-box fails) are possibly due to people not understanding this is an AFF/4Ksector-size HDD. They do not work in some operating systems unless the OS is MANUALLY modified by the user to do so.

It is also possible that early life failures (e.g. within a few months) are due to operating in a laptop that does not ventilate the HDD area very well. ALL mechanical HDDs will experience early failures when temperatures exceed their operating specifications. One must also watch out for condensation when moving from a cold environment to a warm environment (like glass of ice water "sweating"...not imagine a drop of condensation impacting the MILLIONTHS of an inch gap between the R/W head and the platter). The drive must be allowed to acclimate for an hour or so in the new environment to substantially reduce risk of mechanical crash due to condensation on disk platter.

Keep in mind the track widths and spacing of this and similar HDDs are VERY small compared to HDDs of even just a few years ago and are less tolerant of such factors as overheating and condensation.

5 out of 5 eggs1 year and counting

Pros: -Reliable drive, I've moved this through numerous builds and I haven't experienced any issues.
- Excellent speeds for a 2.5" drive.

Cons: HGST price, it may not be the cheapest drive around but just check HGST failure rates and you'll understand the price.

1 out of 5 eggsClattering something fierce

Pros: Price was low

Cons: Got it, formatted it, intending to use as backup. Next day turned on PC and was working on something else in same room, when started to hear a clattering noise. Yep, it was the hard drive. I'll go for a refund...

5 out of 5 eggsBought Because of Good Reviews

Pros: Christopher S. said: "Read Reviews, Not recommended"

Strange, I originally purchased this drive ** because** of the very good review it got on Tweak Town. And it benchmarks better than any other (non flash cache) 2.5" drive I have tested.

I have purchased more than ten of these drives and have experienced no issues at all.

Cons: None.

1 out of 5 eggsRead Reviews, Not recommended

Pros: Great specs for the cheap price.

Cons: I read the reviews and chose to try it too. "You get what you pay for." Loud Screetching and Chirping as soon as I plugged it in. Completed a quick format with minimal chirps and squeaks, did full format and would be silent for a few mins, then screetch like nails on chalk for a full 30 secs, then silent, then finally failed to format at 33%.

Other Thoughts: I buy a ton of hard drives... I took a chance.. I wont again.
Back to WD and Seagate. Newegg letting me return. Will purchase WD and pay about $15 more. I read the reviews, took a chance, not recommending for others.

5 out of 5 eggsMBP Replacement

Pros: Quiet, fast, high spin 2.5" drive at 1Tb. Much quieter than the OEM Seagate, even under load. Price point was great, particularly catching it on sale.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Purchased to replace OEM 500Gb in my Apple Mac Book Pro 17" mid-2010.

Removed the old drive, installed the HGST, and upgraded the RAM. Put the bottom back on, booted from the old drive via external USB-to-SATA long enough to start the OS X Yosemite installer. After clean install, migrated my documents from the old drive. Haven't looked back.

1 out of 5 eggsFaulty Product

Pros: None.

Cons: Purchased it and after installation, though it was very quiet when flat, but every time I tilted the laptop it sounded like someone getting a buzzcut. Loud and not healthy. HGST tech support said to have Newegg exchange it.

2nd one, the replacement, didn't have the buzzing noise when tilted, But, it ran very loud like an old tower.

Returned it for store credit and will be trying to get a Seagate. Newegg customer service was very good, but this item was very bad.
