Are these good for everyday computing like playing games,browsing web, and making videos? Or is it just for server like systems?

The device will work in your system but does not come with a power or data signal cable.

Your system probably already has a 4 pin power connector cable already but you may need to get a SATA power converter cable and a data cable. They are inexpensive.

Is this a good drive to use in an external RAID enclosure?

I purchased two of these drives for my 2 bay NAS (ix-dl2) from Lenovo EMC and they have been working continuously since Feb. 2014 without any problems. I picked these based on the results from Backblaze. They maintain thousands of drives for online storage and the Hitachi drives had the highest reliability of all the drives. Seagate, on the other hand, had the worst (by far) reliability. I have my two drives in a RAID 1 (mirrored) configuration and I haven't run into any problems. Other brands can be found significantly cheaper but I believe that with hard drives, you get what you pay for.

Yes, the operating system has very little to do with HDD compatibility. The main issue is compatibility with your motherboard. If you already have this drive working with an older version of windows. It will definitely work with Windows 10.

got my 3tb HGST NAS Deskstar drive today.. got a little problem. i downloaded the software for it (for drives over 2.2tb) and when i go to install it, it says no drive found. the drive doesnt show up in windows explorer BUT does show up in windows device manager. any ideas? DOA?

I just had this issue myself.  The system that I put this drive into is an older system, a Core 2 Duo.  Doing some research I found a few things out.

If you are going to use this as a BOOT drive, you will have the have a UEFI bios, which is only on the newer systems.  You will also have to use at least Win 7 x64, or newer.  You will need to format the drive using a GPT partition, not MRB.

If you are just using as a data drive (which I am doing), you don't have to have a UEFI bios, BUT you have to have a SATA controller that will recognize past 2.2tb, AND the current drivers that support it as well.  The SATA controller I had, did have support, but the drivers were a little harder to find, as Intel discontinued support for the controller I have, in the most recent versions.  I had to find the version of the driver that had both support for larger hard drives, and support for my chipset.  After I upgraded the drivers, my drive showed full space.  You still need to partition using a GPT partition, but that's pretty much it.

I had the same issue with the paragon software, which is useless for Win7 x64, if you don't have correct SATA drivers, after which you don't need the software.   It might be useful if you are trying to use WinXP, but since I didn't end up using it, I can't really say.  You are better off not using any software if you don't have to for drive access anyway.

Can you use this as a regular HDD, inside a desktop. not utilizing any NAS functions?

I just set mine up today as a normal drive in my desktop machine. So far it's great. From what I can tell, most NAS drives just have a slower spin speed (longer access time) and lower power usage. This is a 7200 RPM model though and feels fine. I have a SSD for my system drive though, this one is for working files.

No accessories, drive only.  Using it presently in a raid 5 triple 3TB disk configuration.   No issues or problems.  HGST/Hitachi/IBM have been one the most reliable drives I've owned.   I've owned many. My first drive was a Seagate ST-225 20MB (That's not a typo, Megabytes)

what is the max voltage used for this hard drive?

The voltage specified by the manufacturer is 5 volts DC + or - 5%.  The spec for current draw is 1.2 amps at start up. I installed the drive in my desktop PC with standard connectors.
There is reference to a 12 volt specification so perhaps HGST makes a different model for use in higher voltage configuration.

Question 10

Why does a product that boasts a "1 million MTBF" only have a 3-year warranty? Is MTBF measured in units of seconds? That would be 1.9 years. Not so great, but at least the warranty would cover it.

One potential explanation: these are NAS/server drives, it's common practice to replace drives in such duty every three years, even if they haven't yet failed (these retired disks are where a lot of "refurbished" drives come from.)
