5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN(0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: - problem free installation
- 140 MB/s transfer speed
- quiet
- good packaging

Cons: - none so far

Other Thoughts: I used to like IBM drives 15-20 years ago. Than stopped liking the Hitachi ones when they took over IBM's storage business because of failures. After a long hiatus I decided to give them a chance and picked 2x3TB HGST drives and so far very happy. We'll see how they hold in the long run.

4 out of 5 eggsRather slow for a brand new model.

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN(0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Excellent recent reliability history of the company.
Very quiet.

Cons: High cost.
Quite slow compared to Seagate's ST3000DM001 3TB 7200RPM drive.
Very warm to the touch compared to the Seagate:
No benchmarks out there (currently)

Other Thoughts: I think there is a reason that HGST didn't send these drives out for benchmark reviews.
I bought this drive to use a parity drive for an unRAID server. Here are the preclear numbers vs the Seagate:
Pre Read: 111MB/s vs 130MB/s
Zeroing: 125MB/s vs 159MB/s
Post Read: 59MB/s vs 88MB/s

The Post Read is done with a lot of interspersed random block reads and is a very good indicator of comparative seek speed. 33% slower is not very good.

I have 3yr-old drives in the array that perform better than this "new" HGST model.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive so far

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN(0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: The HGST NAS drive is a hybrid deskstar with some added features from their ultrastar line.
I have been running a pair 24/7 now for almost two weeks and no issues.
This is the first HGST/Hitachi drive I've purchased since a IBM deskstar 60gig over a decade ago.
3 year warranty is inline with the competitors own NAS labeled drives.
These drives run cool, I average between 27-29C [80-84F] with low RPM 140MM fans cooling them. They only peaked a few degrees higher under long transfers and when I did a full 3TB block scan with HDtune that took around 8 hours.
Packaging is retail and they were secured in their own tray and packed well, this will cut down on bare drive DOA's.
The factory box also doubles as certified packaging in case of a RMA.

Cons: None noted unless they fail and HGST's warranty is a series of jumping through hoops which hopefully is not the case.

Other Thoughts: This drive is fairly fast, faster then my older WD Black 2TB drive and runs much cooler.
They are AF drives and over 2TB so you need Vista and up and GPT format for storage.
You need X64 to make it bootable but not sure why somebody would, it is not what it's designed for.

1 out of 5 eggsZero Day Fail

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN(0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Capacious Drive. Quiet Performance

Cons: Formatted drive with 3 partitions under Windows 8.1 NTFS. Transferred large amount of data via an external hard drive dock. Installed hard drive in main computer and all formatting and data lost upon startup of computer. Could not reformat drive with all know hd tools. Returned drive after obligatory tears.

Other Thoughts: Was especially disappointed that this drive failed after studying Backblaze hard drive reliability data.

3 out of 5 eggsmodel # OK

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN(0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: good size/price. Have yet to install. Just checked actual drive model # to see if previous post is a prob. Found usefule info on HST site:
http://www.hgst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/0BF8B842F66D454288257C74007E842B/$file/DS_NAS_spec.pdf

See the specs (model # vs kit #)

Cons: None yet. Will finish review after setting up NAS.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good.

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN(0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Comparing these to the T drives I previously purchased 1/3 had a failure in the first month on them while so far all three HGST are still running with no errors. If this continues a few months I will use these to build my NAS box since I had reservations about my T drives that I purchased.

Cons: Runs a little hotter than the T drives, but manageable.

Other Thoughts: To correct the previous posted comment about the wrong part number. The part number physically on the drive is HDN724030ALE640 for the 3TB, with the kit number H3IKNAS30003272SN that has the SKU 0S03660.

4 out of 5 eggsI bought more

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN(0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: High capacity for the money, and rated for 24x7/higher cycle count. Good value for home server duty. Satisfied enough to buy more.

Cons: Run pretty warm when active, even with 140mm fans blowing over them (40-45C about 7C hotter than the other drives with less platters, OAT 20C). Can hear the vibration hum over the fans in a quiet room, but these are 7200 rpm so that's expected.

5 out of 5 eggsNo DOA!

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN(0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: 6 out of 6 passed low level format, and long surface scan with flying colors. Drives arrived in factory box with proper support, though Newegg is still skimping on packaging, as the factory box WAS bouncing around in the shipping box, little plastic air bags basically worthless. Very quiet, non-existent vibration. Reviews for Hitachi drives seem very good so expecting similar results from these. Price is comparable to WD Reds, with the performance of the WD SEs.

Cons: Next to no information about these drives, HGST finally put some datasheets up, but still very little information, had to ask about features through e-mail submission. Made me a bit nervous, but took a chance and am very pleased so far.

Other Thoughts: Saw the note from other user about questionable warranty. All the serial #'s match the factory box, which is marked as Deskstar NAS. If you look at other Hitachi drives, that number that was referenced, doesn't always match up with the model#. I would contact HGST to verify, but I would be surprised if with all the factory packaging that they would fail to honor warranty.

3 out of 5 eggsHGST 3TB Retail (Wrong Model Inside)

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN(0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Not DOA - Hitachi drives used to have a low failure rate. Too early to know about the more recent drives, now that WD owns them. NewEgg's policty on hard drive packaging has improved greatly, and as always, they shipped it promptly.

NewEgg supplied the RMA Return Shipping Label.

Cons: As with another brand drive NewEgg sells (think T), the advertised model IS NOT WHAT YOU GET. What does this mean... YOUR WARRANTY IS VOID. 0-days WARRANTY..

Advertised HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN
Received HGST Deskstar HDN724030ALE640

A quick check at Hitachi HDD Warranty/RMA site reveals this drive only comes with a 2 year warranty, but only if you have a proper receipt stating you bought this model, which you don't! Meaning: ZERO WARRANTY and likely an INFERIOR DRIVE.

NewEgg offered me a $20 partial refund, which I declined. I asked for $40, they declined. RMA in progress.

Other Thoughts: Since this is the second time this has occurred to me while buying 2 different manufacturer's drives from NewEgg, I am justifiably concerned about NewEgg's policies. Common sense tells us it's NewEgg's responsibility to determine if a manufacturer sends them the correct product, and if not, CORRECT THE PROBLEM. Yet, reading through the other drive's reviews reveals this is an ongoing issue.

5 out of 5 eggsFast, Silent, packaged

This review is from: HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS30003272SN(0S03660) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Bare Drive

Pros: Meet the expectations.
Came in a box (so they come well packaged and protected.), as opposed to the typical bare drive sent by Newegg

Cons: As opposed to what the packaging say, you need tools and cables to use those...

Other Thoughts: I ordered 4 to run on a desktop based NAS (FreeNAS) plus one on my main workstation. They work great. Time will tell if they'll last 1 million hours (134 years)!

Note: I got them at $149/ea, and this was overall a great value for Hitachi drives.
