5 out of 5 eggsUsed for Storage

Pros: I love this product, the drives are quiet and reliable, with no issues at all.

Cons: None so far and I'm not expecting any.

Other Thoughts: The price is very good for the capacity of the device. I run them in a WD mycloud ex4 and has worked really well for me.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Install was a breeze. Formatted it using Windows' Disk Management and all 4 TB are available for me to fill with media for my Plex server. It is noticeably quicker than my WD 2TB green drive as expected. I have other HGST drives in my existing machine that are well over 3 years old and all are still running great.

Cons: None so far.

2 out of 5 eggs2 of 3 worked

Pros: The ones that work seem fine so far

Cons: The one that didn't work wasn't recognized by my computer, sounded like a jet engine, and made scraping noises when spinning down.

Other Thoughts: Ordered 2 for a RAID1 setup, only 1 worked. Replacement seems fine. 3/5 stars because only 2 of 3 worked, minus 1 more star because it cost me an extra $9 to return. (I *was* eventually sent a free UPS shipping label, but well after my RMA request, and after I had rushed to USPS before it closed)

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive!

Pros: Fast, reliable, inexpensive.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I've been running 8 of these in my Synology NAS for close to 3 years. Only one has failed and it was quickly replaced under warranty. Beyond that the drives have been reliable and access is fast (due to the 7200rpm spindle speed). This is why I bought 4 more for my recent NAS expansion. I trust the manufacturer and at $180 on sale you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Drives

Pros: I have purchased a number of HGST drives including 6 of this series; all through newegg. 2 were mounted in my old system (Mac Pro 1,1), two in clients' systems (Windows PC's) and 2 in my new (to me) Mac Pro 5,1. So far, all of them have performed flawlessly. Low temps, very fast and ready access to much-needed storage space at what I would consider a very affordable price.

I purchased two of these about 15 months ago; the other 4 were purchased about 6 months ago. So far, I've had no problems with any of them, nor with any HGST drive I've bought. I know of no hard-drive product line that is without a few defective individuals but these have been as good as I've seen in 24 years of working on computing systems. I would recommend them without hesitation. In fact, I'm ordering two more today (which is how I came to write this review).

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I've seen several low-egg reviews commenting on the lack of included documentation and software utilities. These are BARE DRIVES; they are not intended for 'consumers' but are marketed with system builders like myself (who neither want nor need docs or software) in mind. Just a word to the wise.

Documentation and utilities, if needed, are readily available online.

4 out of 5 eggsHGST Dekstar NAS 4TB

Pros: These NAS drives work great. I have two of them in my Synology (DS414) and I just ordered two more. Their performance is awesome. The 7200RPM's make a big difference

Cons: Can be a little loud and they do tend to get a little hot.

Other Thoughts: As of this review, these seem to have the best pricing according to their specs. I have looked at other 4TB NAS drives and they are all more expensive; even the ones listed at 5900RPM's. Don't hesistate, buy these.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works! I got the 4 TB model. Powered up and partitioned like a charm. Copied over the contents of an older 1 TB WD Green drive with no problem. Watched some video and it cached just fine.

Cons: Pretty heavy for a 3.5" drive. I wouldn't really expect bulk storage like this to be lightweight though.

Other Thoughts: Advertised in base-10 TB, not proper computational base-2 TiB, so 4 "TB" works out to something like 3.64 TiB. No eggs docked since all the HDD manufactures do this, but it's still stupid because half of them make RAM and that's not sold with the same shady math. Yeah I'm still bitter all these years later.
