Seagate's Momentus 7200.1 80GB hard drive is a sure fire way to get your notebook running like a high performance sports car. Blazing fast! With an 80GB that just begs to be put to the test with high end applications, this hard-drive is more than up to the challenge with an 8MB Cache Buffer and 7200 RPM hard disk that’s one of the fastest in the business. If you’re looking for reliability, consistency, and speed, look no further. This hard drive is S.M.A.R.T! It contains Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology that ensures your data will be safe from any defects, or drive failures. It does this by alerting you before they occur, and advises that an immediate back-up be performed before disaster strikes.

This high performance hard drive is surprisingly quite despite its high speed capabilities, i.e., 10.5ms seek time, and 4.2ms average latency. Seagate's Momentus deafening ultra silence make it the world’s first virtually silent hard drive. This feat is accomplished by the hard drive’s SoftSonic Fluid Dyanamic Bearing (FDB) motor, which also serves to minimize heat output and total vibrations. This is the hard drive you’ve been looking for. Now that you’ve found it, you know what to do. Get it today!

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible

Pros: It breathed life into my laptop. Before I had an old 40 gig 4200 rpm hd and it was unbearable. Now I have double the space and it's so much faster. Just as an example how about this. Old hd booted up in about 1-5 minutes, this one 10-40 seconds. Amazing.

Cons: So far all that's bad is that it runs hotter and at times can be annoyingly loud. I'm ok with the heat because the laptop stays on my desk but the noise really is a bother.

Other Thoughts: As soon as I can I'm going to up my ram from 256 mb to 2 gigs. With my new hd and the ram my laptop will finally be able to act like a functional computer.

5 out of 5 eggsFrom 4200 to 7200 in a flash!

Pros: Quick install, out with the old, in with the new.
Clean install was as easy as putting in the Operating System CD.
This drive is as quiet as the OEM from Dell (Inspiron 8600, 4200 RPM 40 Gig) Maybe quieter. Warm to the touch after 6 hours of loading software. If I were to have listened to some reviews I would have thought I would be able to make toast while wearing hearing protection with this drive, Not so at all.
If and when you have the opportunity to purchase one of these drives for your older ATA Lap Top, do so as they are becoming hard to find at a semi-reasonable rate.
This upgrade along with 2 Gigs of RAM has brought an ageing Dell Inspiron 8600 into the 21st century.

Cons: Notta

Other Thoughts: If you have an older Lap Top that you are considering replacing, try this upgrade first. If you still feel like you need a new Lap Top you'll still get your money back out of the drive when you sell your old Lap Top.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and long lasting

Pros: The ATA-6 interface takes advantage of 7200rpm and hence lower seek and access time to data. It is considerably faster compared to the same exact model with 5400rpm. And it is still performing well after two years of long hour operation.

Cons: Nothing really!

Other Thoughts: Wish newegg would carry them more often.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Faster RPM's compared to other laptop drives.

Cons: Very loud, incredible heat, sucks the battery dry in half the time.

Other Thoughts: Not so sure why I bothered with the 7200 speed. I assumed it would be faster than a typical 5400, which it is, but not worth the loss: Battery only lasts 1 hour instead of 2. Unit can cause burnt skin. It is VERY loud and annoying; louder than my desktop pc hdd'!. If you don't mind all those things, then the extra speed might have its' weight over the cons.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Product

Pros: super fast and halfway easy install. i went from a 4200 rpm to the 7200 and the performance gain was astronomical!

Cons: it came with a bent pin that i didn't notice until i tried to install it and messed up the ide connector in my laptop a bit. once i fixed that it was great!

Other Thoughts: check the ide connector pins! i had to tear it down to the motherboard to fix the connector and its usually fun to do that but not with my old laptop and its worthless assembly

4 out of 5 eggsSeagate Momentus 7200

Pros: Works great! I installed this in my Presario 2195US. Runs much quieter than the old Toshiba I had.

Cons: The only con I can come up with right now is with the laptop, not the drive. If you own a Presario 2100 series, keep the "pin extender" from your old hard drive. I almost returned this drive until I found a comment on this site from someone who has a 2199US and had the same problem. The first drive I bought already had the extender on it and I didn't realize it was removeable. Duh me!

Other Thoughts: Newegg is awesome! I appreciate the ability to post comments because without them I probably wouldn't have figured out my problem so quickly. Recommendation to everyone: When you post a review, make note of your hardware and any issues you had. You never know who it will help!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive

Pros: Very fast drive, and quiet.

Cons: Seems to run a little bit hotter than the replaced hitachi (40C)

Other Thoughts: I replaced the oem hitachi drive on my laptop (7200 rpm hitachi) and this one is far more quiet, and it has at least the same performance.

4 out of 5 eggsfast, but slightly noisy and warm

Pros: 7200 rpm means that it's fast, almost as fast as desktop drives. I bought this to replace the original Hitachi Travelstar 40GB 5400 disk in my Dell Inspiron 600m laptop which crashed after 3 years. Installed and works perfectly. But there is a small price to pay in terms of noise and heat.

Cons: The drive is slightly noiser than the 5400 rpm Travelstar that it replaced. The bigger problem was that it run slightly hotter, which caused the fan to run at full speed while working on battery power. The extra noise of the fan bothered me so much that I could not use it any longer. I ended up replacing it with a 5400 rpm Toshiba 60 GB 5400 drive, which was quieter and cool enough that it didn't trigger the fan.

Other Thoughts: It's a good drive, just be aware that it is slightly noiser than a 5400 rpm drive, and slightly wamer.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat upgrade

Pros: I upgraded from a 40 GB 5400 RPM hard drive which shipped with it, and I noticed a tremendous difference. Internet explorer took almost 10 seconds or so to open on my last one, but on the new one it only took one or two, and my boot time was pretty much cut in half (I copied all the files over from the old one).

Cons: None that I can think of

Other Thoughts: Good harddrive, good brand, great warranty. I can't tell yet if it's any hotter or cooler than my old one, but the noise level seems to be the same.
