4 out of 5 eggsRuns a little hot, but that's it

Pros: Great drive, never had any problems with data loss, crashing, etc. while getting medium-high usage in a desktop computer running Linux for almost 2 years now.

Cons: Runs a little hot. I don't fully understand how it works, but I think Hitachi "cheated" on making this drive by adding an extra platter instead of increasing the data density. Because of this, it's a little hotter than you might like.

Other Thoughts: Bought this back when it was the first 500 GB drive to hit $200, but it seems that there are a lot of cheaper drives nowadays. I just ordered another 500GB drive from Newegg to RAID1 with this one, and it was only $80.

3 out of 5 eggsNice drive, needs tweaking

Pros: I got this particular drive from Newegg due to its size and to use NCQ and ACHI. It does that nicely with the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H board I selected for my nice Blu-ray home media center as an adjunct to my Dirctv HR-20.

Here is the link to the wish list for this build: http://tinyurl.com/3zzcvu

Cons: It is essential to run the ftool.exe utility obtainable from Hitachi. Installation with ACHI was a problem in Vista until I downloaded the correct drivers. Install as IDE first and then change over if you want to do that after all of the drivers are on board. The default speed for the drive is 1.5Gb/s and that was not changed until I did so using the utility. So, if the drive seems slow, it actually is until you change the setting. Also, it was a noisy clackity-clack street car of a drive until I set the utility for quiet operation. Likewise default is for low power use (as in a laptop) and I changed that to normal so it does not slow up or make noise when it turns on and off.

Other Thoughts: The Hitachi Ftool.exe requires a boot disk, which was poorly set up. I finally figured out that I had to have a physical A: floppy installed and that I could not have the motherboard setting to anything other than IDE Not ACHI. Then the Ftool.exe utility worked. It was a lot of screwing around to get ftool to boot and run. Because the tool is poorly written, and the autoexec.bat file is wrong, I had to run it several times to actually change the drive. After that it is a nice drive that does what is should do.

Oh by the way, I love Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Bought four of these to use in a high-end gaming/multimedia PC in September 2005. All are still running strong in RAID 5 to this day. Quieter than my power supply so I can't complain.

Cons: None. It's easy to forget they're there until I need them; the way it should be. Like all novelties, they were much more expensive when I bought them back then.

Other Thoughts: I have a relatively large chassis with 12cm fan blowing on them 24/7. My PC is always on. They're used for multimedia storage on my home network: DVD ISOs, mp3s, miscellaneous installers, et cetera. Treat them right and they seem to last forever.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid trailing-edge drive

Pros: Currently reliable, reasonable performance

Cons: Relatively expensive, loud unless adjusted

Other Thoughts: This drive has been made in much the same form since 2005. While very fast when introduced, it lags behind current designs. It's also loud when seeking by default. If you want it to be quiet, you have to boot into Hitachi's disk tools to turn on acoustic management, which futher degrades performance. Those tools also are where you set the drive to the higher SATA speeds supported by modern controllers. Between the speed adjustment and the loudness adjustment, onsider a trip to those tools mandatory if you buy this drive.

It's also pretty expensive per GB now compared with its more modern rivals. But compared with the reliability disaster that seems to go along with all the newer designs using immature technologies like perpendicular recording, this older design seems to be working pretty well. Wasn't always like that. Browsing the reliability stats at StorageReview suggests this drive had plenty of issues its first year. But the ones shipping nowadays seem pretty solid.

4 out of 5 eggsfast storage drive

Pros: Solid Hitachi Drive.

Cons: Runs Hot - Not fast enough for an OS drive - Hitachi Feature Tool

Other Thoughts: I HAD to add a 120mm fan to my system to get it up to 70cfm so this drive wouldn't run at 60°C, it runs at 35°C at load now. It's data transfer speed is only mediocre. It's comforting to hear this drive compared to all my silent WD's that have failed in the past. Makes me think "yah, its solid, it will last."

4 out of 5 eggs)

Pros: Based on all the other reviews (here and elsewhere) it seems to be a reliable old tech. Works for years with no problems.
Nowadays some manufacturers (I'm looking at you Se****e) moved their production to china.. and the reliability on latest perpendicular recording hd's is just cr*p. So its better to wait until they get it right, before investing in new tech.

Anywho. Speed is pretty fast.

Cons: On default setting - LOUD! In my Antec Sonata case (+2 120mm fan with speed control), HD seeks are pretty loud and very noticeable.
There is a cure, thankfully, with acoustic management enabled seek noise becomes really silent. You do get + ~5 ms seek time as a penalty (for the total of 18 ms, versus 12 ms without), soo..

compared to my old Se****s 7200.7 200gb (which are dead silent, same total (with overheads) 12 ms seektime), the 5ms penalty for acoustic management might be a turn off.

Other Thoughts: These harddrives were designed to run at corporate environment (NAS's and such), so they were not created with silence in mind. I don't know what I would've done without acoustic management (returned the HD probably, or bought the HD enclosure), so kudos to Hitachi for creating this option.

You do have to pay for reliability with something, I guess.

Hopefully this HD will last me for a long time.

5 out of 5 eggsDESKSTAR

Pros: Very quiet, so far not even a hiccup and I got two for my computer, Pteridactyl. I might get two more, since I will be doing heavy video editing. they would fit nicely in the Antec P180 case.

Cons: I might use a little faster access drive for the programs, but reliability is most important to me. they are no blazingly fast off the line but seemingly quiet and reliable is a bigger plus for me.

Other Thoughts: Antec P180, HE 550 ps, Abit ip35 Pro 1333 FSB, E6750 Processor, mushkin 5-4-4-12 Ram 800mhz, 2 Deskstars, EVGA 8800 GT 256 bit 512 mb, card reader, Acer 22", Asus DVD lightscribe, APC 450 watt backup

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Drive!!!

Pros: Great drive, large capacity, cheap. Newegg had the best price around - I won't shop anywhere else!

Cons: A tiny tiny bit loud, but certainly not loud enough to knock an egg off...I suppose most drives like this are a little louder.

Other Thoughts: I put this drive in the antec mx-1 external case, and runs perfect. But remember to go into disk management and format the drive before you think it's DOA. I thought it was, but after calling Hitachi (who by the way were very helpful and quick), I had it formatted and up and running in no time.

5 out of 5 eggs!!!!!!!! 3.0Gb/s !!!!!!!!!

Pros: YOU NEED TO RUN THE HITACHI DRIVE UTILITY BEFORE SETTING UP RAID IF YOU EVER WANT THESE TO WORK AT 3.0GB/S!
Otherwise you must break raid to run the utility. It will not recognize drives that are already in an array.

Cons: Other than the Raid issue these drives are top notch. They are a little on the loud side but the acoustic management in the utility really helps if it bothers you.

Other Thoughts: Definitely purchase if you are looking for a solid unit. A little pricey but worth the investment.

2 out of 5 eggsKaputt

Pros: Large capacity

Cons: After 10 months, started getting bad sectors. Hitachi's RMA policy requires you to return the drive before they send a replacement. So I'm meant to be without a hard drive for 10-14 days!
