great boot drive
- Pros: Easy to install, great price, fast and quiet drive, download software from Seagate web site to clone my old, smaller hard drive to this drive. Cloned drive works great and my old Qosmio G15 laptop that even boots faster now with the new drive.
As usualy very fast delivery from newegg!
- Cons: None.
Good replacement HD for older laptops
- Pros: Reasonable price, replaced a failed HD in an older dell with no problems.
- Cons: Slow compared to any modern HD.
Solid notebook drive replacement.
- Pros: I chose this drive for its price (about $60), storage (80GB - 20GB more than the OEM drive), speed (5400 rpm … faster than the OEM drive), compatibility with my Toshiba Satellite A75 (a behemoth notebook with a Pentium 4 processor, two fans, and a massive heat sink that looks like a car radiator) and most importantly, large number of positive reviews by NewEgg buyers, over a long period of time. NewEgg promptly shipped on the Monday following my Saturday online order, but unfortunately, the drive shipped from Memphis TN, so it took a few extra days to arrive at my home in CA. NewEgg shipments from within CA arrive sooner, at least for me. The drive fit like a glove in the OEM caddy, it accepted formatting and Windows XP Home from the Toshiba recovery disk without a hitch, and now seems to be running fine ... for now. It’s quiet and fast.
- Cons: No "cons" specific to this brand/drive. I’ve learned the hard way -- through three different laptops and dealing with failed hard drives on ALL of them -- that notebook/laptop computer users should back up their data frequently, and just accept the fact that ALL these compact, high density drives are prone to failure, precisely because they concentrate a lot of motorized disk activity, heat, and storage media in a very small enclosure. In the end, even the best HDD makers can’t overcome the laws of physics, and arguments over labels are largely meaningless, except where some particular maker uses defective designs, components or assembly procedures (and news of those kinds of defects tends to spread quickly). In short, if you happen to stumble on ANY notebook drive that lasts more than two or three years, consider yourself lucky … you beat the curve.
- Other Thoughts: This is my third drive on this notebook. The original “Toshiba” drive died a little over a year after my purchase. The second one, identical to the first, croaked in just under 3 years (wow ... a new record), but at least this time I realized the drive was failing before it died completely, and successfully used the "freezer trick" to coax a few more restarts out of it and back up ALL my data before tossing it into “e-waste” Gehenna.
After two crummy OEM drives, I thought I'd try an "aftermarket" drive, but that term is an illusion. I mean, how many Chinese factories are mass-producing notebook hard drives, anyway? There's probably only one or two huge companies there able to mass produce such high-tech, mega-patented gadgetry, and they undoubtedly “shop out” their bargain-basement drives to multiple OEM’s. I think whether or not you have a good experience with any particular “Made in China” HDD has far less to do with labels than pure luck.

Introduction
The Seagate Momentus ST980815A 80GB notebook hard drive uses perpendicular recording technology for maximum capacity, reliability and performance in demanding operating environments. Perpendicular recording technology increases capacity and reliability and reduces the potential for thermal decay of data.
The ATA-100 interface ensures compatibility with a wide range of notebooks. An 8MB cache buffer and a 5400RPM supply fast transfer speeds with a minimum of bottlenecks.
The whisper quiet acoustics and low power consumption make this drive a prime choice for external drive enclosures, tablet PCs in addition to notebooks and non mission critical blade servers.
