Remember when a machine that offered a third of a Terabyte of storage took up an entire room? Well, today, the Seagate FreeAgent Pro offers 320 GB of storage in less room than a hardback novel! The 7200 rpm drive will send a project to a flash drive, copy audio to your MP3 player, upload photos to your hosting service, and put your entire "My Documents" folder on your own secure Seagate website (subscription required) for 24/7 access, all in no time flat.

The unit can also perform automatic revisions of your content, so you always have backup of the latest version of your work. Should you develop a problem, you can use the backup to roll the system back to an earlier time, with no loss: system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current.

The FreeAgent Pro connects by eSATA or USB 2.0, and includes software for data sharing and remote access. The modular interface system lets you adjust your connection type for best performance. The FreeAgent Pro is an excellent solution for video editing, high-resolution imaging, backup or general storage.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, easy and it does what it is supposed to do. Back-ups using Norton Ghost are a breeze.

Cons: Included back-up software is only a demo and does not automatically perform back-ups.

Other Thoughts: 320GB for under $100! And Newegg gets it to you fast!

5 out of 5 eggseasy to install and use - no problems

Pros: easy to use
easy to install
small and not ugly
vertical so it takes up less space on my desk

Cons: have not found any yet.

Other Thoughts: easy to install and use, because you plug it in and it does everything else for you and automatically backs up everything as you create it, save it, or change it. I originally bought this because my lap top hard drive sounds like it is going out (it has not yet) and I wanted a way to save my companies' data before loosing it. I also wanted to save my millions of images that I love to take. It saves the files everytime I make or change them, which is great so I do not have to manually do it, as I would forget. I was a little scared that it would take forever to install and be all complicated, but you just plug it into the USB and it walks you through the REALLY short install and that's it! Took about 5 minutes or less to get it out of the box, installed and all set up. I leave it on all of the time.

2 out of 5 eggsNot all that impressive

Pros: see cons.

Cons: Used a huge amount of system resources, and would freeze my computer on reboot. Had to unplug the HD each time for my computer to fire up.

No Off switch.

Too much light.

2 out of 5 eggsGood Brand, Poor Product

Pros: I got it on sale for $75. It ran well for a few months?

Cons: Don't try to run music off it, don't try to watch a movie off it, don't try to store anything you use on a regular basis on it. I had it for ~2 months, and decided I'd store my music on it, and listen that way. 3 days later, it gets all sorts of errors. Fixed through lots of rest, back up and running. I watch a movie yesterday through the external, works fine, start watching one tonight, crashes the external halfway through.

Other Thoughts: I don't understand what happened. Seagate are usually VERY reliable, and I love their internal harddrives, I guess this was just a bad choice.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome device

Pros: Fine external USB hard drive.

Cons: None that I can see.

Other Thoughts: Used this to backup my stuff to do a FreeBSD 7 upgrade, and to offload some anime. Worked out great. Only used USB, not eSATA.

2 out of 5 eggseSATA for what?

Pros: The drive is nice, brushed metal finish, great yellow lighting aroudn the case.

Cons: eSATA does not work properly for many people who bought this drive, Seagate support has no clue what to do about because its a neglected feature of this product. USB works perfectly odnt bother with the eSATA on this.

Other Thoughts: If you are going to put a feature into a product and put it on the box make sure it works (seagate).

5 out of 5 eggsSexy External HDD, Great Value!

Pros: First thing you'll notice about the drive is its sheer sexiness! Fake brushed metal exterior is nice! My sister's Western Digital MyBook has got nothing on this baby! Orange lights dim after a period of inactivity, great feature. Power button is touch sensitive, WOW! I went for the Pro version because the dimensions were slightly smaller than that of the regular FreeAgent models. Very quiet, does the job well. 5 year limited warranty to boot! Power cord is decently long, adapter is small and portable.

Cons: Wasn't sure if drive came already formatted in NFTS (forgot to check) but when I first used it, i was only getting 11mbps tops! And since i didn't really care for the preinstalled utilites, I formatted the drive. After that, I was getting around 20-25mbps, which is good enough for me. HDD runs a bit warm during long transfers, wish it had fans for those really hot summers. USB cable is a little short, but perfect for me since I keep it next to my laptop.

Other Thoughts: 320GB is going to be approx 298GB, just to let some of you know. DONT COMPLAIN THAT YOU LOST 20GB'S! That's how it suppose to be for ALL storage devices. I'm using USB, so I dont know if eSATA works well.

5 out of 5 eggseSata works Great

Pros: Purchased this along with a Rosewill RC-604 eSATA PCMCIA card for my Dell 610. Runs perfect 9hrs a day, 5 days a week at work for backups and running vmware images. Will never go back to USB 2.0 storage.

Cons: Software preloaded on the drive, but that was gone after a quick format. ;)

Other Thoughts: This is listed as a usb OR eSata drive, for those that try it's electricaly impossible to access the drive with both at the same time...

1 out of 5 eggseSATA doesn't work

Pros: Fairly small design.

Cons: eSATA does not work, which is the reason I got the drive. I called Seagate Tech Support and after I gave a lady (who didn't speak English very well) 10 minutes of information she told that the eSATA does not work (nor was it meant to) and to use USB.

Also the drive lights never turn off. The only way I could get the thing to shut down is to unplug it.

Other Thoughts: I'm running Vista Business 64 bit and so I ran into problems with the trial software. Every file it tried to back up had an error.

DO NOT buy this drive if you want to use eSATA or have Vista x64!

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY!

Pros: Don't buy if you want esata. Customer tech support from SEAGATE is probably the worst I've ever seen. Wish I could of got my money back. You would be better of keeping the extra cash and just buy something is USB not a combo like this drive. I would highly receommend the Western Digital over the Freeagent only on basis that I think Western Digitals customer service is by far better.

Cons: Technical support level one don't have a clue what they are talking about. They had me go to memeo because they support the Freeagent.

Other Thoughts: I don't normally write bad reviews of products, but this time I think I need to. Don't bother with esata and this drive, and seagate tech support is by far the worst I've seen in a long time.
