Remember when a machine that offered half a Terabyte of storage took up an entire room? Well, today, the Seagate FreeAgent Pro offers 500 GB of storage in less room than a hardback novel! The 7200 rpm drive will send a project to a flash drive, copy audio to your MP3 player, upload photos to your hosting service, and put your entire "My Documents" folder on your own secure Seagate website (subscription required) for 24/7 access, all in no time flat.
The unit can also perform automatic revisions of your content, so you always have backup of the latest version of your work. Should you develop a problem, use the backup to roll the system back to an earlier time, with no loss: system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current.
The FreeAgent Pro connects by eSATA or USB 2.0, and features includes software that facilitates data sharing and remote access. The modular interface system lets you adjust your connection type for best performance. The FreeAgent Pro is an excellent solution for video editing, high-resolution imaging, backup or general storage.

Good drive, *with firmware upgrade
- Pros: Power management (the drive will spin down at intervals set by you), theoretically fast eSATA interface, appearance.
- Cons: slow transfer speeds over eSATA with default firmware
- Other Thoughts: I bought this drive primarily for its power management and fast interface. I was dissapointed in the eSATA transfer rates which were erratic and topped out at 39 MB/s sustained with HD Tach (20 MB/s according to windows). After researching the issue I found a firmware upgrade on the web which SIGNIFICANTLY improved the transfer rates - now seeing sustained 60 MB/s plus in HD Tach. The firmware upgrade does not appear to be officially condoned by Seagate, but because this is a big issue, here's the link: http://support.seagate.com/rightnow/downloads/FA_Pro_eSATA_Update.zip
If you do the upgrade, just be sure to follow the instructions in the PDF file and unplug the drive for 30 seconds afterwards before using.
Priceless art!
- Pros: Just got this Seagate Freeagent HD. I got it after a lot of research I determined this is the best one. (I got the Pro version with the eSata connection for a little more).
First thing you're gonna notice is how aesthetically pleasing this is. It is like a peace of modern art on my desk! Its operation is as quiet and smooth as its appearance. This complements well with my newly built "near-silent" system with the Antec P182 case. The amber light on "Pro" version is badassess. Also, the on/off switch is a nice touch!
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: Contrary to what the previous viewer said about the missing On-Off switch, it DOES have one! I thought it was missing at first but, if you notice on the base at the right side there is a circular power symbol. Just place your finger over it for 3 seconds to turn it on/off! Wow what a unique bonus! This is art. Priceless.

1st drive DOA; 2nd drive golden
- Pros: Large space. Easy to use. Faster than other external drives. Has USB and ESATA. Back up two laptops and still have space.
- Cons: First one was DOA. Good thing new egg is so good about returns. They even paid shipping. other than that the drive works like it should.
- Other Thoughts: After I had the first one not work properly I did some looking and it seems the drives have had some power problems, which is what I had. If you notice anything at all I would replace it right away. Note that the power button is not really a button. You just touch the power image on the base stand for a few seconds and that it.
Rethink getting Seagate FreeAgent
- Pros: Nice case. Big size for good price
- Cons: eSATA most likely wont work for you either. Many complaints. Lights can be turned off via software however a power cycle defaults the settings(?). LARGE case for simple drive. NO fans so no reason for it to be so large.
- Other Thoughts: Don't pick this one because of the eSATA connection. Other then that its an alright choice. Interface can lockup requiring power cycle.
May Not Last...
- Pros: Quiet and nice looking. The orange light is a nice touch but can be turned off if it annoys you to the point of throwing it out a window. So just use the bundled software and turn it off instead of ruining your drive. I also got lucky enough to get this on sale for cheaper than the regular Freeagent. This thing did what I wanted for Acronis backups perfectly until...
- Cons: The other day, the USB just gave up. It won't talk to a computer anymore, period. Doesn't feel like the hard drive is working (it's quiet but not to where you can't feel it spinning when you put your hand on it). I don't know why it would work one day and give up the next, but it looks like I'm gonna have to RMA it.
- Other Thoughts: Don't do crazy things to your Windows if you've backed it up to just this device, as if your luck is bad enough, it might give up on you, too, and at the WORST time.
They should include a whole separate manual on how to operate that quasi-touch button that has a mind of its own. Never had a problem with Seagate's internal drives, so if you just need more storage and don't care where it is, go that route.
