Remember when a machine that offered half a Terabyte of storage took up an entire room? Well, today, the Seagate FreeAgent Pro offers 500 GB of storage in less room than a hardback novel! 4 out of 5 eggs1st drive DOA; 2nd drive golden

Pros: Large space. Easy to use. Faster than other external drives. Has USB and ESATA. Back up two laptops and still have space.

Cons: First one was DOA. Good thing new egg is so good about returns. They even paid shipping. other than that the drive works like it should.

Other Thoughts: After I had the first one not work properly I did some looking and it seems the drives have had some power problems, which is what I had. If you notice anything at all I would replace it right away. Note that the power button is not really a button. You just touch the power image on the base stand for a few seconds and that it.

2 out of 5 eggsRethink getting Seagate FreeAgent

Pros: Nice case. Big size for good price

Cons: eSATA most likely wont work for you either. Many complaints. Lights can be turned off via software however a power cycle defaults the settings(?). LARGE case for simple drive. NO fans so no reason for it to be so large.

Other Thoughts: Don't pick this one because of the eSATA connection. Other then that its an alright choice. Interface can lockup requiring power cycle.

3 out of 5 eggsMay Not Last...

Pros: Quiet and nice looking. The orange light is a nice touch but can be turned off if it annoys you to the point of throwing it out a window. So just use the bundled software and turn it off instead of ruining your drive. I also got lucky enough to get this on sale for cheaper than the regular Freeagent. This thing did what I wanted for Acronis backups perfectly until...

Cons: The other day, the USB just gave up. It won't talk to a computer anymore, period. Doesn't feel like the hard drive is working (it's quiet but not to where you can't feel it spinning when you put your hand on it). I don't know why it would work one day and give up the next, but it looks like I'm gonna have to RMA it.

Other Thoughts: Don't do crazy things to your Windows if you've backed it up to just this device, as if your luck is bad enough, it might give up on you, too, and at the WORST time.
They should include a whole separate manual on how to operate that quasi-touch button that has a mind of its own.
Never had a problem with Seagate's internal drives, so if you just need more storage and don't care where it is, go that route.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a good choice for autobackups

Pros: Looks Cool. Drive made by Seagate.

Cons: Power switch is ridiculously bad - hard to use. The autobackup software (written by Memeo company) does NOT work correctly - see their discussion forums for evidence of this.

Other Thoughts: This is a potentially great product, with flawed execution. The software simply does not work. As just an external USB drive, its fine. But don't expect anything from the automatic backup features. Oh, and I don't think the Firewire interface works very well either - does not pass its own hardware checks, although it appears to work fine. I went through three drives, all replaced by Seagate, before giving up on Firewire connectivity. Seagate makes excellent drives - I use them in all of my home-built computers. But this drive is an exception. They should give up on this one and bring back the Mirra Personal Server, now THAT is an EXCELLENT drive with EXCELLENT BULLET-PROOF software. Consider yourself warned.

5 out of 5 eggsWorthwhile Backup Drive

Pros: Sleek straightforward housing with enough heft to reassure, and provides a good balance of cost/storage

Cons: It isn't as fast as an internal drive, but no external drive is.

Other Thoughts: Hints for use: I used an eSATA to SATA cable routed into my tower to connect this drive directly to my motherboard and it comes on/turns off with my computer. I get burst speeds of over 184 MB/s and average speeds of over 64 MB/s according to HD Tach 3.0.4.0, and that's without disabling all running programs. You can use the autobackup program it comes with as well as drag and drop files into it, but turn off the autobackup before doing the drag/drop and store the files in a separate folder than the autobackup folder. Ive had no problems with heat. Some people were reporting excess heat and really slow eSATA performance. If you're having problems, try going with an eSATA to SATA cable and see if that solves things for you. I have yet to see any problems.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Drive

Pros: First off, the metal casing looks beautiful, and it should hold up well over time in terms of durability. The casing also acts as a passive heatsink, keeping the drive relatively cool. Setup was very easy and quick. The included software works well but doesn't really add anything that Vista doesn't already have. 5-year warranty is great to have.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I have always purchased Seagate internal drives, but this was my first external purchase. I'm sure I'll be back in the future. Seagate is always the best!

5 out of 5 eggsBest external drive I've ever owned.

Pros: Fast. Cheap. Reliable. What you'd expect from Seagate. USB2.0/eSata (the only interfaces that matter) ALSO it's a little piece of art on my desk. The design of it is stunning. I wish I could design an office around it. You could put it on display as modern art.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Alot of people/reviews said that it had not power switch, when indeed it has a touch-sensitive power switch on the front right corner of the base, people just don't know what they are looking for... people are trained to find a button or a toggle... i think the touch sensitive button works great with the overall style of the design.

5 out of 5 eggsVery decent, fast

Pros: Exactly what I was looking for in an external HDD. Good fast transfers, lots of space, fair price.

Someone below said there's no power switch, and then someone else said there is. There is.

Cons: Little warm, but most are.

Other Thoughts: I think it came with NTFS partitions if I remember right (not necessarily a pro). I reformatted it and set up the partitions how I wanted them, I can plug it into Linux, Windows, and Mac now. I had to remove the NTFS though.

4 out of 5 eggsFreeAgent Pro 500GB

Pros: The obvious advantage is having half a terrabyte of memory. Also, set-up is exceedingly simple and it's ready to use in under 3 minutes, making it an ideal product for people with limited knowledge of these kinds of things.

Cons: It's touchy and inconsistent, especially concerning the power supply. Often, it turns on while not connected to a computer and, more rarely, turns off while it is connected. Also, the base is unstable it tends to fall if you bump the surface it's on, which is obviously not good.
