4 out of 5 eggsGood hard drive.

Pros: 1 TB is great (931 GB formatted)... what can I say? Light and relatively compact, no usability issues, etc.

The best products are the ones that don't demand any attention from you.

Cons: Takes a bit long to access information. Much slower than my older 250GB Seagate drive, but that's to be expected.

Other Thoughts: I bought it because of the gigabyte/dollar ratio. Been using it for almost a year with no problems. Very satisfied!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive... So Far...

Pros: Finally got up to a terrabyte.

Cons: Have had to unplug the power once since I got since my laptop wasn't recognizing it after a sleep mode. Hasn't done it again since then. Been kinda nervous about this drive after reading some other reviews, but I've been using this for about 4 months without problems.

Other Thoughts: The stand isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be from what I read in other reviews and the glowing light is pretty cool.

1 out of 5 eggs2 Months and POOF

Pros: Great price from NewEgg. 1 TB of storage seem at such a low price seemed like an amazing deal.

Cons: Seagate support for these drives is horrid. Check out their user forums and see just how little they are supporting what appears to be a lemon product. The forums direct you to a knowledge base with limited information. When that doesn't get taken care of, contact technical support, which eventually refers you to the knowledge base and eventually for a $$ RMA for them to send you a new drive.

Other Thoughts: I read the negative reviews before I bought this drive and ignored them. Now I'm out a few days work and missing close to 100GB of files I had transferred over. Simply put, this is a back-up stationary drive ONLY. Any other use will most likely disappoint.

5 out of 5 eggsLots o' space

Pros: I bought it for about $150. Lots of memory for cheap.

Cons: sometimes my comp won't boot with it plugged in but it's no big deal. Just unplug and good to go.

Other Thoughts: Works well for playing music movies and mounting iso's from it.

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate External Storage

Pros: So easy, so effective. 1 TB stored 6 drives in my homemade tower. Improves connectiveness, retrieval
and speed. Plus, still enough room to be back up. What took me so long?

Cons: No cons.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD

Pros: * Works under linux & win32 platforms w/o problems.
* Very quiet

Cons: * When unmounting, sometimes the orange light stays on. Need to unplug power before re-mounting for it to be detected again.

Other Thoughts: I use this device for my fileserver, which is up 24/7 for months at a time. I liked it so much that I bought another one, using rsync to back up two directories amongst both of the devices.

1 out of 5 eggsPrepare for Disaster.

Pros: Formatted capacity of 931GB is nice, USB 2.0 support was adequate enough to fill the drive without any problems. Esata might be nice but isnt necessary.

Cons: You are buying
A) a 1TB seagate sata 3.5inch drive
B) a 50 cent plastic seagate external enclosure.

This drive like most other 750GB+ drives uses parallel recording to achieve the density, however!

parallel recording drives are MUCH more sensitive to shock, This drive is designed to stand up. Mine tipped over and that was enough to kill it. No longer recognized at boot.

If you're going to put 930 gigs of STUFF onto a drive you better be sure it wont fail at the drop of a hat!

For all intents and purposes these drives should be treated like a carton of eggs and should always be stored in a physically secure location.

In short they're not very well suited to external applications.

If you want to go external buy the drive alone and buy a quality external enclosure, not some plastic shell matchbox that just got slapped on there.

I disassembled this drive and it is very poorly constructed. The newer freeagent line is made to lay flat (I wonder why?!).

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this drive, buy the enclosure separately along with the OEM drive. It's cheaper and it's more secure.

Always keep an offline backup of your data.

If you do choose to use this drive I suggest you wrap it in foam rubber (dont block the vents at the base).

Also you should store it in one of those really heavy fire proof security boxes made to withstand natural disasters etc. Just drill some holes for ventilation, power, and data.

Make sure you leave the box somewhere no one will trip on it or cough on it. Preferably you should dig a hole in the ground and sink the entire thing in there. You might want to steal some rubber padding from a playground and lay it on top just to make sure no vibrations will ever reach it.

Also because this is an external drive and you are going to be carrying it to other computers I suggest you invest in a good shovel and put a good landscaping company on speed dial.

That's all, be sure to review seagate's return policy before pu

5 out of 5 eggsGreat For Mac

Pros: I have read a lot of reviews and I want to put some ideas and thoughts to rest. This drive will work on MAC, for more than backup.

To Format For Mac: Disk Utility -> Select Drive -> Partition -> Then Select how many partitions. I use one. Select Format HFS+ or HFS.

This will allow you to partition it for MAC and not give an error.

FAT file systems do not support files over 4GB. Not all characters are allowed in the titles as well.

You do not have to select the security options in the erase tabs. This will just waste pointless time, as it will take hours and days to write zeroes over the drive multiple times.

I have owned a Seagate 500GB drive with no problems or errors, and this is my next drive. I have not come across any hardware errors with either until this time.

I enjoy the drive in the stand and that it turns on and off with my MAC just like the other Seagate. I prefer the mini USB connection.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I selected a drive with just a USB connection, if you need more, make sure to buy an extreme version, as it has usb, firewire, and eSATA. I prefer a mini usb connection over the larger usb connection.

In my experience the larger usb connections on some external cases hangs the drive and delays some operations. This is not for every drive enclosure, but it has happened to me. I prefer the mini usb, when you hook it up to a WD TV it works far superior. A large usb will create a contact that creates lines on the screen in some instances.
