Lousy Software

Pros: Drive is quiet, reasonably fast.

Cons: Installed on a colleague's home system. The included backup software is pathetic. It won't back up any system files (which it defines as any file with the hidden and system attributes), so that eliminates the entire Windows folder. It also won't back up entire volumes (in this case a couple of flash drives), but only folders within a volume. As a workaround, I created a single root folder and put all the "real" folders inside that. However, there are errors on the log and it's not clear it's working. Also, as far as I can tell, the software only retains one scheduled backup job (so no pre-scheduled daily and weekly backups), and doesn't do incrementals or differentials (although the sync function may have the same effect...haven't tried it.) Any IT professional who's dealt with "real" backup software is going to be very frustrated with this product.

Great Drive but

Pros: This drive is smoking fast by eSATA. Setup was quick and easy until the update was done. Works great with little heat production for the size and speed of drive. For $149 and a 5 year warranty you can't beat it! Seagate is reliable.

Cons: The onboard software that is included is good also but beware if asked to download a newer version. When I did the drive stopped being recognized by the software but was being recognized by XP. It required a complete uninstall and reinstall of the original software bundled with the drive to correct the problem. Also the included software will NOT make a backup image of your boot drive. When tech support is called they happily give you a link to the file to download DiscWizard that does the job nicely. It is a shame they do not include the software on the drive.

Other Thoughts: I have not tested the drive with USB or Firewire but it is great to have 3 connection options.
