5 out of 5 eggsVery Happy With Drive

Pros: No problems with this drive.
Purchased 2/27/10
That's almost 4 years, can't complain about that

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I am going to replace this drive with a newer speedier WD
of about the same size. I have all my games on this drive and they all run fine.Time to sell this Seagate or put in closet as another backup HD.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed

Pros: Good price for the GB at the time (bought it about 3 years ago for $60)

Cons: Failed within a couple months. Very disappointed, was never able to get a hold of Seagate for a replacement.

Other Thoughts: Get a Solid State Drive. These HDD's fail so quick it's ridiculous.

2 out of 5 eggsSolid drive, until it's not

Pros: Quick, quiet, and high-capacity. Never had a problem with the hard drive until just this last week.

Cons: After two years of uptime (according to SMART) my computer simply started rebooting on its own. Doing several hardware checks lead to a big nothing. In fact, when I went to check the hard drives integrity in windows 7x64, the computer restarted before I could get a reading. Rebooting into a live *nix environment and reading SMART data from there I was shocked to find out that the drive had accrued no less than 550 bad (reallocated) sectors, and a terrible high-pitched grinding noise every once in a while. As the drive hadn't corrupted any data yet, I began to copy what was needed to my external hard drive and reformat. After a short period (2-3 days) I checked SMART data as, unsurprisingly, the problems had persisted. The drive showed even more bad sectors (about 20 more) since the first time. After looking up warranty data for a possible replacement, I came to the conclusion that Seagate's RMA process is just terrible.

Other Thoughts: Buying the drive barely over three years ago I was wary about buying from Seagate as I'd heard the stigma concerning their customer care/support. Of all the Seagate/Maxtor drives I've ever used, 3/3 have died in a relatively short period of time, whereas all the Western Digital drives I've used are still working fantastically.

4 out of 5 eggsDid its job

Pros: Cheap at the time, ran 24/7 for more than 3 years.

Cons: Transfer speeds at time was sluggish but nothing too bad.

Other Thoughts: I love seagate, use them 90% of the time, this is the first drive of mine that actually failed this badly.

1 out of 5 eggsDied in one year. No warranty repairs.

Pros: It was fast and ran rather cool.

Cons: The drive started to have media errors after only about a year of use.
This is an OEM drive so you cannot claim warranty repairs with Seagate.
It is not quiet.

Other Thoughts: If you buy OEM Seagate drives be sure you understand that you won't be able to claim a warranty repair with Seagate.
Short warranties are risky since the expiration date is printed on the drive and is not based on the purchase date.

4 out of 5 eggsOverall a good hard drive

Pros: I purchased 4 of these drives to run in RAID 5 in a home based web server. Overall, the drives have functioned well. They run quietly reliably. I have had them running 24/7 for over 2 1/2 years, I have had one drive fail after about 18 months. Seagate replaced the drive without any hassle.

Cons: One of my four drives failed.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat drive..

Pros: Its fast, reliable and has good amount of storage.

Cons: Not much of a con but when doing heavy writing or reading it can get loud. I use this drive heavily. Lots of data in and out. Heavy gaming and video editing.

Other Thoughts: Had it for a little over 2 years, has HP firmware on it. I think the reliability issues has something to do with faulty OEM seagate firmware. On the drives that fail, replacing the main board on the drive may fix it. or a simple firmware change can prevent it. Drive has 4 bad sectors, no problem. has an up time of 562 days so far.

5 out of 5 eggsStill works

Pros: I have 2 of these HDD's and after 2 years they are still working fantastically. I use them for media purposes such as movies and music. While another one is used for my applications and Steam.

Cons: Non yet

Other Thoughts: I also have a 1TB Barracuda and it has worked great too

1 out of 5 eggsI guess one out of four is not horrible...

Pros: Good price at the time

Cons: both drives I bought died within about a month of each other (different computers) - warranty replacement on both (there goes all my data) - then 1 of the 2 replacements quits after a month of being in service!
