5 out of 5 eggsWorth it

Pros: small and portable, no AC adapter required (because it's portable)

Cons: surface can be easily scratched. It doesn't always run when on a USB hub due to the lack of external power

Other Thoughts: I use this for files that I can't fit on my flash drive and for when I need to do a quick backup. Worth the money, especially for the size.

2 out of 5 eggsPaper Weight

Pros: Price & Capacity

Cons: Stops working

Other Thoughts: I've never done a review on newegg but I feel compelled to do it for this particular product hopefully in a attempt to help other people who may consider buying this.
I bought this USB HDD on boxing day two years ago +. It had served me well. However about a week ago it had started to make clicking noises and eventually windows would not recognize the drive. This was much to my dismay as the drive was pretty close to full with music and movies.
After tinkering with this drive with disk management and seatools and getting no where, I decided to rip it out of the plastic enclosure and put it into my desktop in the vain hope I could recover even a portion of my information. Connected and powered the hard drive would not be recognized in any fashion.
So those who are looking to buy this refurb or new stay away unless you like losing information. I am lucky that there were not any important or irreplaceable data on this HDD.
I also would like to add that I had always been a big fan of seagate hdds. Never had one fail. Maybe my luck has run out and need to move on to another brand, as I don't know if I can trust another seagate again.

4 out of 5 eggsHas worked for me

Pros: Worked right out of the box
Has lasted over 2.5 years now with no problems.

Cons: I can see the nonstandard cable might be an issue, but it hasn't been yet.
Not a fan of sealed externals like this, but I'm not using it for primary storage, so it's fine for my purpose.

Other Thoughts: I bought one of these in December 2009 to back up a bunch of personal stuff from my work computer to transport it home. (I was leaving that job) It did the job, and because I could use some of that stuff in my new job, it's sitting hooked up right now to my work computer. So this has worked on 3 computers over 2.5 years now, no problems. That's why I'm buying another one for my wife's computer right now, while the Shell Shocker deal has it at $80.
Buy these for portability and backups, not primary storage. USB 2 isn't fast enough for that anyway.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: It worked, however briefly

Cons: I had it for about 1 1/2 years, for the first year, it basically sat on my desk 24/7, very light usage, and it worked reasonably well, but was very slow transfering. About 8 months ago, I started needing to carry it around with me more (to/from class and work, etc.) and within a month, it completely died. Reformatted itself completely and irreversably, I lost almost 200 gigs of music, and 20+ gigs of family photos. Now I have a 1TB doorstop.

Other Thoughts: If you have 1TB of information that you need permanently deleted, buy this drive, otherwise, buy a WD. I got a WD MyPassport as a replacement for the dead seagate, and it works like a charm. 1TB, USB 3.0, and 2.5" form factor (runs on usb power, no extra AC adapter) and it was only $130 when I got it, now down to $110.

I work in a computer shop, so naturally I see a LOT of dead hard drives, 9 times out of 10, they're Seagates. I don't know what it is about them, but they ALWAYS die.

2 out of 5 eggsCable to small

Pros: I don't know, I haven't tried it yet, but I can already see the cable is too short.

Cons: USB Cable is too short

Other Thoughts: I just took this out of the box, so I can't tell you how well it runs, but I can already see that the usb cable is way too short, about 38 cm! There's no way that can reach from my desk to my computer on the ground. I wanted something that I could use at home, but could also take on the road. The USB port for this thing is shaped in a non-standard way, so it'd probably be hard to find another one. I'm assuming that it runs ok, hence 2 stars instead of 1. I could raise this if I can find another cable.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Rick,

This reply is from Seagate Support. We noticed your review and wanted to comment on your experience with your Expansion Portable drive. Since the Expansion Portable drive draws its power entirely from the USB data port on your computer, the cable is shorter to allow enough power to reach the drive. If the cable was longer, enough power may not reach the drive and it would not function correctly. Our Expansion Portable drives use a standard non proprietary mini-B USB 2.0 cable. If the cable looks different than a mini USB 2.0 cable, perhaps you have our USB 3.0 version of our Expansion drive.

If you have any remaining questions, we would be happy to help further. Please try the link below to speak with a support representative directly:

1 out of 5 eggsBad Drive

Pros: Large. Cheap

Cons: Fail. Dodgy maintaining connectivity.

Other Thoughts: This drive failed after 1 year. Drives shouldn't fail in such a short time. Thanks Seagate. I'll refrain from buying your substandard products in the future.

4 out of 5 eggsNot as bad as I expected

Pros: Used it for 2 years now. No problem at all.

Cons: The cable seems not so common. If I lost it, maybe hard to get another one

2 out of 5 eggsNeeds Improvement

Pros: Size and portability; Ventilation

Cons: Very slow; not a good choice for constant use, which is what I needed. I was not able to work with documents on this drive without regularly having to unplug and re-connect the drive from my laptop.

Other Thoughts: I had to transfer all my data to a different Portable HD to use for my daily needs. Not at all happy with this item's performance.

4 out of 5 eggsEasy fix to DOA hdd.

Pros: Awesome amount of space for a min usb hdd. Easy to fix the DOA problem buy cutting some of the plastic off the usb plug that connects to the drive as the usb mini plug does not go in all the way. The only reason I did not return was because I had not opened the box untill 3 months after purchasing it. So I took a chance and it worked perfectly.

Cons: Like other had said. I thought this item was DOA but found out that the problem was that the usb mini plug was not making a proper connection with the drive. the easy fix was to take a utility knife and cut some of the plastic part of the usb plug that connects to the drive and it worked fine after that. Other than that its a good drive.

Other Thoughts: Seagate really need to check the usb connectors that ship with the drives better to avoid the Doa issues as the drives acutally work. The usb mini plug was actually the culprit with the drive not being detected. For this I minused a star.
