4 out of 5 eggsTruly "Ultra-portable"

Pros: I use this every day - and have for almost five years. I transport it to and from work to home in an OGIO backpack. It is recognized instantly on any PC I've connected it to. The capacity is outstanding. very quiet and reliable.

Cons: The cable could be longer, but it has never failed.
The "USB-to-HDD" interface plate - the base in the picture above - occasionally "unplugs."

Other Thoughts: I have been a Seagate fan for over 15 years, this drive just makes it more so. I have personally recommended this drive to my family and friends. It simply does the intended job very well.

3 out of 5 eggsOK

Pros: The drive stores data, just as a drive should. Having the option to use usb3.0 or sata is nice. The usb connector comes off to reveal sata ports to connect to a desktop or estat port for faster data transfers.

Cons: The led on the connector is almost useless. Ever external hard drive and flash drive I own has an led that flashes when there is disk activity. This led gently 'breathes' on and off. It is not easy to tell if the disk is being written to. I get that having flickering leds isnt the most pleasing thing to look at, but this led is almost useless. Also the cable is usb to stata cable that comes with it is flakey quality and doesn't fit snugly into the drive. The drive can lose power if you wiggle the cable. This cable, I suspect is proprietary.

2 out of 5 eggsflimsy connector

Pros: Worked without hassle.

Cons: The USB connector on the drive flaked out after a couple weeks, causing the drive to periodically lose power. The drive is firmly plugged into the USB port, but I have to push down on the connector at the drive's end (like a lever) to get it working now.

2 out of 5 eggsWhat are your qualifications to read or write a review?

Pros: 1.5TB was max available capacity at the time I purchased this drive. WD now offers a 2TB version of "My Passport", which is almost certainly a better deal.

Cons: Unimpressive transfer rates, physical footprint

Other Thoughts: I seriously wonder if the people writing these reviews have had experience with other products in the same general market.

Look, in its day, this was the biggest capacity USB3 external drive on the market. That's no longer true. The "super fast" transfer rates quoted by other reviewers are indicative of the experience of those reviewers. I suspect the issue is that due to the cache of the drive, you see insane (high) transfer rates at first - 100MB/sec is entirely possible for the first few files. But returning to reality, if you are moving serious data (tens of GBs), the transfer rate quickly slows to about 15 MB/sec. And that's over a USB3 port that I've seen SUSTAINED 150MB/sec rates on with a proper SSD.

Bottom line, this is a perfectly adequate but not terribly economical drive with an bigger-than-necessary physical footprint, and interoperability of interface (USB3 vs. eSATA vs ???) that sounds good on paper but has little to do with real life. I prefer WD My Passport drive

5 out of 5 eggsStill Going Strong

Pros: Fairly cheap for the amount of space when bought

direct access to SATA if you wish to by removing the USB connector which you can also buy others that will do esata

with USB 3.0, transfer speeds are around 70 mb/s for most files

Cons: Nothing wrong with the drive

Other Thoughts: When I first got the drive I was putting a ton of games and software on from my brothers pc...then the power went out. when it came back on I went to check where the transfer stopped and I couldn't find the drive under 'my computer'. which I think is the case for most the people that said that on here. I then went to disk management and saw that it was still recognized there. since they shipped it with fat32 you have to be careful to disconnect the drive safely or you will run the risk of corrupting your files. I formatted it to ex fat that way you don't have to worry, you can practically treat like a USB flash device. I have not had a problem since. one thing to note is that if you are still using windows xp you will need to find and download the patch to accept ex fat format

1 out of 5 eggsI lost all my files (Afghanistan)

Pros: Sharp looking drive with plenty of storage

Cons: I am sitting in Afghanistan with a “Dead” Seagate hard drive. Family pictures, videos, music, work files, school files all gone. I took extra precautions to keep the drive out of the heat and sand. It was stored in an air conditioned building out of the elements. The drive is not recognized by Windows 7 and the indicator light on the drive flashes continuously. So I am stuck here in Afghanistan without my data. Sigh...

Other Thoughts: I was using about 1TB out of 1.5 TB. That is a lot of pictures, video, music, work, and school files that I will never get back especially considering I am deployed to Afghanistan.

1 out of 5 eggsbad connector

Pros: Small
does not require seperate power source
self loads it's own software
trustful electronic brand

Cons: I have used this drive to back up my computer. I needed a hardrive with this capacicty. After using this less than thirty times it began to beep at when connected to the computer. Now if you even move the cable when connected to the computer it crashes. I am very disappointed for the money that it is already having issues.

Other Thoughts: I will try to contact the manufacturers and see if they are willing to replace the hard rive.
