1 out of 5 eggsI beg you - Do Not Buy

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It's cheap - if it lasts.

Cons: I'm on my fourth RMA with End-to-End SMART errors. It's not worth the hastle. Go with WD, instead.

4 out of 5 eggsBackup ur data

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Hassle free RMA from seagate

Cons: 2 years warranty. I wish it was 3 or more years.

Other Thoughts: I have 3 of these in raid 5. In about 2 years of using these drives one of them failed. Because of the raid 5 i did not loose any data.
Seagate has a hassale free RMA system, basically they provide us the option to have the replacement shipped before they receive the return (they charge $200 if they don't receive it).

5 out of 5 eggs1.5 years in RAID-5

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: No failures or odd sounds on the 3 x 2TB drives after 1.5+ year in a hardware RAID-5.

Cons: Long spin up times are a pain, particularly so in RAID.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive for backups

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: HUGE amount of storage. Quick access and write times

Cons: It's not as fast as an SSD....not really a con just the way it is.

Other Thoughts: This drive replaced an aging 300gb Seagate. The primary reason for this drive was for backups of the OS before being sent to the NAS.
The file transfer on the drive from and to local drives as well as to network locations is much faster than I expected. While the speeds are not higher than advertised, my perception is they are very fast. Of course going from 3gb a sec to 6gb a sec might have an impact.
Bottom line, this drive was the right size at the right price. if you're looking for more storage this drive fits the bill well and is recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsLots of space for the price

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Love it, I got it on sale for $70 and it runs great as a second drive!

Cons: I can't get a SSD for half the space at the same price but that's not this drive's fault. Just a Tech wish.

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 2Tb of space which is perfect as a storage or game drive

Cons: none really besides the fact that it's an HDD with HDD speeds. Gotten used to my SSDs haha

Other Thoughts: Would recommend for those of you looking for a good storage drive

4 out of 5 eggsReplacement

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Solid drive, good price, 3 out of 4 still working. Bought a 5th as a backup.

Cons: Drive lasted about 18 months

Other Thoughts: I purchased 4 of these drives for a raid 5 configuration. I move 350MB of video to them every 10 minutes. I can't complain that 1 failed within my warranty period. Seagate took about 2 weeks to replace the failed one, I provided shipping to them.

1 out of 5 eggsNot dependable

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Lots of storage for the price. Decent speed.

Cons: I bought two of these drives, and after four months, both drives have had problems with disappearing from Windows, followed by failure to start with the system. One of the drives I had to reconnect hot just to get it to pop back on!

Other Thoughts: Would have lost a lot of important data if not for backups! Will never opt for a cheap drive again.

4 out of 5 eggsHead parking click sound

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Inexpensive, performs at advertised speeds. Still working well after 6 months.

Cons: Head parking makes an audible click sound that is annoying to me. Firmware update did not fix the head clicking.

Other Thoughts: I thought that I would have to return this drive simply because of the annoying head parking click every 20 seconds, but I found out that I could adjust the APM (Advanced Power Management) settings with programs like "Hard Disk Sentinel" and "hdparm." The drive comes shipped with a default APM setting of 128. I found that an APM setting of 199 (190 does not work. I haven't as yet tried other setting between 190 and 199) stops the load/unload cycles that cause the head to park about every 20 seconds.

Unfortunately, the APM resets to default every time you reboot from a power-off state. The paid version of Hard Disk Sentinel has a setting in which it reloads your preferred APM setting on every boot-up. Alternatively, some have been running scripts to write to the drive every 8 seconds or so to stop the head from parking. That is a bit beyond my capability at the moment, so I haven't tried that. I tend to leave my system running 24/7, so manually adjusting my APM settings from every powered-off boot isn't so much of a hassle for me to start looking for alternatives just yet.

A number of reviewers have reported that their drives have failed within a year. I couldn't find the stats on this drive for the number of load/unload cycles it is designed for, but I found some general information that various drives are rated from as high as 600k to as low as 50k load/unload cycles. As a reference example, a load/unload cycle count of 788.4k would be reached if a system was left on 24/7 for a year, with a load/unload cycle every 20 seconds. So, maybe the both audible (sound is energy) and numerous head parking of the load/unload cycle is the culprit for the early-failing drives.
