3 out of 5 eggsSeems stable after an initial problem

Pros: The drive does provide a noticeable improvement to my boot times and frequently used application load times. 750GB is plenty for my needs, and I like that the caching functions are completely OS-independent.

Cons: Within the first 24 power-on hours, the drive started freezing up and became unresponsive to the system. When this happened, I'd get a blue screen from Windows, and then the drive would not be recognized by the BIOS after reboot. I left the drive powered up and idle for a couple hours in the hopes that it would sort itself out, and surprisingly enough it did. I've since been using the drive for a year after that initial hiccup and the problem has not resurfaced.

Other Thoughts: I can't say that I completely trust the drive. Even though it has now run for a year without further problems, I keep extra backups and avoid storing anything critical on the drive.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Easy

Pros: Easy install in a Mid 2009 MBP. Seems much faster than aging stock 500gb HD.

Cons: Slightly louder than the OEM drive.

Other Thoughts: This was easy to install. The increase in speed was worth the money. Used Super Duper to copy the internal drive to the new one and then installed. Worked like a charm.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat upgrade

Pros: Awesome idea with these drives!
I know the other system components are part of the big picture, but my system will go from desktop-->shutdown-->desktop in ~26sec.
So far so good, definitely worth the few extra $$

Cons: none yet

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's a hybrid, so it's faster than your average 7200 rpm HDD (for small to moderate sized files). price/performance is better than a SSD

Cons: It's still SATA II, but that's not really a CON or a limiting factor for that matter.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive to replace a standard 7200 rpm HDD in my laptop. Overall, I'd say it gives a small improvelment in perfoamance. Startup is only slightly faster than before (Win7/x64). Power consumption/heat is about the same as far as I can tell. Small to medium sized file performance is very quick, as you'd expect. But, for larger files (like video's etc.) performance is typical of a stock 7200 rpm HDD. These babys will probably go extinct as soon as SSD's become cost competative with stock HDDs. So, I'd say this is a good buy if you can't spend the money for a "real" SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsSmall, Fast and Powerful

Pros: 1. Cost Effective Storage

Pricing has dropped for the Momentus which is available now for $120 with 750GB of capacity, providing a huge cost-per-gigabyte advantage over SSD hardware.

2. Higher Capacity

The latest Momentus drive offers 50 percent more capacity over its prior version, 750GB, and 50 percent more storage than most SSDs today-- unless your budget allows for $3K to purchase a 1GB SSD.

3. Good Performance

Scaling two Seagate Momentus 750GB XTs in RAID-0 just about doubles its single-drive performance, delivering nearly 240 MB/s of sequential read throughput. This matches the sequential performance I see using WD RE4 in RAID-0, although neither drive is anywhere near the 980 MB/s capability of two Samsung SSDs in RAID-0.

4. Low Power

Power consumption is lower than most SSDs and traditional disk drives, peaking at 3.7 watts during sequential reads, compared to 9+ watts for the WD RE4 2TB drive and 4.3 watts for the Samsung 840 SSD.

5. Small Size

The Momentus is a 2.5" drive, an important factor in smaller cases like the Cooler Master HAF XB, which only ships with an internal 2.5" drive cage, thereby eliminating all larger 3.5" drives. Using four Momentus XT disks maximizes limited internal capacity, providing 3TB of cage storage.

6. Nice Warranty

Seagate is offering a 5-year warranty, something rather rare in the SSD marketplace. Another advantage of the hybrid design is whenever the high-density 8GB flash chip eventually does decide to fail, the Momentus remains operational as a traditional 7K RPM hard drive, unlike SSD hardware that degrades and ultimately fails altogether.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I have four of these units running in two RAID-0 sets and they have been rock solid, with very little generated heat as well...

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: I installed this hard drive a few weeks back and it's been terrific. Made my computer much faster when working with photoshop and the rest of the Adobe suite. Mind you I was running out of space before, but still, this is awesome!

Cons: None so far

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive

Pros: My old hard drive was failing and I needed a new Drive. I did my reviews. Things I was looking for. Faster boots, Faster Drive and larger capacity. When I found this drive it fit the bill. Up till then I didn't know that SDD was integrated in to SATA drives. My old drive took about 20 minutes to boot from start to the point where i could use it. Now its ready to go in about 2 minutes. and from sleep it less than a minute.

Cons: none i can think of.

3 out of 5 eggsHad a good run, for a while

Pros: • Good balance of price/performance/capacity compared to pure SSD.
• High-performance SLC flash memory (enterprise grade) used in the cache, instead the more common MLC used in most consumer grade SSDs.
• Internal caching algorithm is completely OS agnostic. The hybrid drive automatically optimizes itself and requires no special setup or drivers.
• Reliability rate of 2 out of 3 isn't bad these days :\

Cons: • As with most drives I have purchased from Seagate in the last couple of years, the quality control leaves something to be desired.
• Not quite as fast as a pure SSD (depending on your workflow--YMMV).
• Still has moving parts, which are prone to failure (see below), and consume more power.

Other Thoughts: I previously reviewed this model, and gave it an excellent rating, having purchased two of these drives, and been very pleased with them. Unfortunately, my luck ran out on drive #3. Within days of installing the drive, it failed. Fortunately, it failed while part of a RAID-1 array, so I didn't lose any data. Having detached the drive from the array, I then ran Seagate's own "SeaTools" diagnostic, which confirmed the drive was defective.
To anyone considering purchasing one of these drives, I can say this: if it works, you will likely be quite happy with it, but in your mind, just add $3-$5 to the price, and about three days to the shipping time; based on my experience with this and many other Seagate drives recently, they have an average failure rate of 25%-33%, so that is the mean price you will pay in money/time for return shipping to RMA the defective drives.
