2 out of 5 eggsDrive seems sound, but constant connectivity problems.

Pros: Good looks, good storage value, solid suite of tools

Cons: Near constant connectivity problems, you can't remove drive and use directly in a machine without complete reformat, opening the case is very difficult (not intended to be opened)

Other Thoughts: I've had this drive both with my machines running Win7 and Win7. In both cases, the drive would occasionally lose connectivity, and I'd have to unplug it and replug it in to see it again. Occasionally it would appear to be working, but when you accessed any files, an error would result saying the drive was corrupted...that was very nerve-wracking. But so far I've never actually lost data. On Win8 it's been worse -- when the connectivity fails, the entire USB bus becomes unusable. Moving to a different bus sometimes helps, sometimes not. Most often it requires a reboot without the drive plugged in, then another reboot, after which I can plug in the drive and it is recognized.

I also had a lot of these problems when trying to use my PS3 to play videos over my wireless network directly from the drive. On my Win7 machine, using PS3 Media Server, if the playback timed out, or the PS3 shut down due to non-use (video playback doesn't tell the PS3 that the machine is actually being used, so it will still auto-shut-off...there's probably a workaround for that), that seemed to be a trigger for the connectivity failures. But I've gotten it more often on the Win8 machine, using Windows to stream, or in other, non-streaming situations.

Caveat: my machines are my own builds -- one was AMD my Win8 is a Core i5...nothing cheap or fringe-market...but still, worth bearing in mind.

And to date -- despite the connectivity problems, zero data loss.

Currently I'm moving everything off, then may try a few more options (going to try running it directly off my router which has a built in file sharing service). In the end I will probably yank it, completely reformat it, and then just use it as an internal drive.

1 out of 5 eggsDisconnects when using USB3

Pros: Hasn't failed on me

Cons: Constantly disconnects when transferring large or many files when plugged into a USB 3 port. Have to restart the PC to get it to recognize this unit.

Constantly makes clicking and scary beep noises

Other Thoughts: Avoid this overpriced and unreliable drive.

1 out of 5 eggsConstant problems

Pros: It hasn't totally failed yet.

Cons: This drive has been a constant problem. I get click of death sounds and frequent loud whirring that wakes me up at night. The drive disconnects when viewing media stored on it, and Seagate customer service has been a huge pain. They respond to requests for help with copy, pasted statements that don't relate to my issue, every time I have e-mailed them.

Other Thoughts: I will never buy from Seagate again.

1 out of 5 eggsAbsurd design flaw for enclosure = cooked drive

Pros: Fast drive, nice clean looking enclosure. 2 year warranty is great so you can replace it under RMA after it dies of a self inflicted heat death.

Cons: I have no idea how this product ever made it to market. I can't fathom that Seagate wouldn't have done some basic temperature testing. If you set up SMART monitoring on this drive you'll get regular warnings about the temperature exceeding the max threshold. These drives basically cook themselves to death.

Other Thoughts: The enclosure needs to be completely redesigned for better airflow. There's a fast 7200rpm drive inside which the enclosure can't come close to cooling properly. If you don't monitor the SMART status everything will seem fine for a while. Do yourself a favor and set up monitoring, and run Seatools before your warranty expires.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Reliable, fast since its usb 3.0. comes with a hard drive adapter, decent software and everything is just plug and play. cool space indication light

Cons: standing it up vertically makes it feel a lil wobbly. wires could be a just a tad bit more longer.

Other Thoughts: excellent price. came with another portable hard drive as a deal when i bought it

1 out of 5 eggsIt Will Fail On You.

Pros: None. I'd give it 0 (zero) eggs if the rating system would allow it.

Cons: It Will Fail On You.

Failed within 1 (one) month of light-duty use.

It's like being con'd: build up confidence, then take you for everything you invested. Even if you're backed up, it's a massive inconvenience.

Never buying Seagate again; the only trouble I've ever had with drives malfunctioning has been with Seagate brand drives. Should have listened to my gut.

Other Thoughts: At least the drive is covered under warranty at the moment.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: None

Cons: This drive is complete garbage. It completely failed on us in less than a year and we've lost 6 years worth of photos of our 6 year old son, not to mention other important files, that we've been trying to back up via a cloud backup service for weeks now, due to an unexplained hard drive failure.

5 out of 5 eggs Oh My Goodness

Pros: Oh My 3 Tb or should I say 2.8 Tb or so it is still massive! I think this isn't for everyone out there but who really knows this is "3 eggs rate" i give it a 5 eggs useful for me.

Cons: I dont care about the 2 years warranty. It said this doesn't work with linux but after format it from windows it works. screw the software they give you!
It over heats becuase i dont work in a office or house but out doors -.- but it should not heat up too much if in office or house.

Other Thoughts: Best 2.8 TB drive. warning get a ups for safety where i work theres brown out sometimes black out for few seconds sucks when copy files suddenly power goes out and it could hurt hard drive. a good steady voltage is good for smooth operation. ups is always recommened for any users just for safety.
