Specs say usb 2.0 backwards compatible, but does that include powering up?  USB 3.0 power output is greater than 2.0 and specs only indicate powered by usb 3.0.

I'm using both the 1Tb & 2Tb versions of this drive at different times on an older Dell Dimension 9100 with only USB 2.0 ports. It is somewhat selective about which USB connector I use and I strongly suspect it's due to insufficient power at one connector.

Is this product compatible with a mac?

The specs do not Mention Mac compatibility, but I would assume it could be reformatted for a Mac. I have not used one on a Mac, since I do not have a use for one, but I have used one on various versions of Linux by reformatting to the file systems required, Some external drives have an NTFS driver for Macs, but I do not believe that this one does.

Can I use this to back up a Windows 03 server?

I would assume it would work with Server 2003. It may require that you reformat the drive for that server platform, but it should work. To obtain the benefits of the USB3 speeds, it might require the installation of a USB3 add on card, if the mainboard does not have USB3 ports available. I have them working fine on Server 2008R2 and higher. We do not use Server 2003 since support was discontinued.

If you look on the specification list it does state it is backwards compatible with usb 2.0. Of course it will not be at 3.0 speeds though.

This drive should be supported on Xbox One but you will have to format the drive through the Xbox One UI to be able to load and play games from it (otherwise it will simply play media like music and video only).

I believe that Time Machine assumes that one backup partition serves one machine.

But you should be able to create two backup -partitions, and assign one to each MacBook.
