Cool, quiet, cost effective
- Pros: Used to replace 80 gb drive in daughter's HP that was out of room. Cloned existing drive to this, so moved 70+gb of data as fast as the internal SATA would allow. Never even got warm. Much quieter than the existing drive (WD Caviar SE). I know it's 5400 RPM, but seems plenty fast and the super quiet operation and low power consumption are major benefits.
- Cons: Didn't clone itself?
- Other Thoughts: I'm getting to think of Samsung as a premium brand, not just a value one. Quite a stretch from it's rep just a few years ago.
Best for the money!
- Pros: Cheap and energy efficient. I can hardly tell it's running most of the time because it's so quiet. Pretty fast transfer times, especially for a 5400RPM HDD. It's hard to beat the price, too!
- Cons: None as of yet.
- Other Thoughts: After researching hard drives for a while, I couldn't find a better rated drive or a better deal on a good 500GB drive. Fast, cheap, and reliable. What more could I have asked for?
Quiet, Fast and Priced Right
- Pros: This Samsung EcoGreen hard disk is fast, cool and quiet. I used the one I bought as storage for a FreeNAS system built into an old PC. It consumes very little power, and is good in an older system whose power supply may be a little weak for today's needs.
You really can't go wrong with this drive for similar applications.
- Cons: From what I have seen, the slower spindle speed does hurt the performance of an operating system. The high data density offsets this a bit (meaning that bigger drives with the same spindle speed could perform better) but there is no replacement for high speed drives if you need one.
Don't buy this expecting that it will perform like a 7200 RPM drive.
- Other Thoughts: I've been using Samsung hard drives for years and have had very good results with every one. Samsung does not have the name that Western Digital and Seagate do, but they still produce a solid product at a competitive price.
