1 out of 5 eggsVery Very high failure rate!!!

Pros: NONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cons: I bought about 15 of these for various customer laptop repair. About 80% of them have failed to date. I have 6 of them on my desk waiting to be replaced under warranty. The drives that I have previously replaced under warranty are failing also. I have been in IT for more than 30 years. This is the worst failure rate that I have ever seen!!!! Even the IBM 'deathstar' drives were not this bad.

Other Thoughts: Save all of you receipts, invoices etc. I would not be very surprised when a class action lawsuit is filed against Samsung/Seagate.

3 out of 5 eggsA decent replacement hard drive for my PS3, not a laptop

Pros: I have ordered many hard drives from Samsung, and for the longest time, they were my favorite hard drive manufacturer. However, I was a little saddened when I had heard Samsung's HDD unit, had been purchased by Seagate (back in 04/2011).

I went against my second thoughts and purchased this hard drive to use as a replacement drive, in a client's laptop. The HDD being replaced had a corrupt C: partition, but the recovery partition was still good, so I copied the partition to this drive. Using Dell's image recovery tools/Windows recovery tools, I installed the "factory image" to the C: partition of the new drive. Great, all seems to have worked.

However, on first boot into Windows (Vista, sadly), the OS could not complete configuration and I would get an infamous Windows exception error. Great, the recovery partition has to have errors. Wrong.

After a few attempts of wiping the drive, re-copying the partition and installing windows (etc.), I still ran into the same error each time. Windows knowlegebase, Google, nothing go help me pinpoint the problem.

I decided I'd try another 2.5" HDD that I had laying around. DING DING DING. I had no problems with copying the partition, re-installing Windows, and having the machine up and running perfectly (well as perfect as Vista can be) in no time. Yes, both the spare HDD, Samsung/Seagate HDD and the legacy HDD were all the same capacity, etc.

In the end, I ended up buying a different branded HDD for the client, and it worked without a hitch. As for the Samsung hard drive, I decided to bump that old PS3 40GB up to 250GB, without any issues.

Cons: I'm sure this would have worked fine, if I was installing from a Windows Recovery Disc. Not sure why it didn't play nicely with a Windows Recovery Partition. Dropped 2 eggs, because of these issues.

Other Thoughts: Works great in my PS3.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Was priced low.

Cons: When I hooked it up to a couple of PCs neither would boot. When putting in a SATA dock it locked up the machines. I never had a bad Samsung drive (purchased about 25) until Seagate bought them.

Other Thoughts: Seagate lowered Samsung's hard drive quality. Too bad.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap, standard drive

Pros: The price is right for the space, mirrored from a damaged drive and installed with no further issues. Hasn't blue screened the machine yet. It's performance is what you might expect with a mechanical drive. Which in all reality is fine for most home users which this drive was meant to replace a "popular company's" 250 BEVS edition which I've never had luck with. I think they don't make that drive anymore so you should be safe just don't pick one up at a yard sale or something they die habitually.

Cons: Have yet to find a con with this drive itself except it shipped in a drive caddy that was loosely flopping around in a box with no additionally packaging around the drive for several hundred miles. I don't know weather this is a con for the shipping carrier, newegg or a really big plus for seagate because theirs not too many drives that would take that kind of abuse and not be doa or at least have some dead sectors. I'm used to them packing their product in bubble wrap and wrapping tape around the bubble wrap a couple times. The drive caddy would have been fine had it had an accompanying box that wasn't 5 times the size of the caddy. Whoever is responsible for this would do well to make sure that packing is done with extreme care with regards to any hard drive especially a mechanical one. As most hard drives have very low g-force tolerance's.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Price

Cons: Dead on Arrival. I ran a diagnostic on the drive before using it. The result was too many bad sectors.

Other Thoughts: I use a USB to SATA adapter to connect new hard drives externally before installing them in a system. This way they come up in windows as an external drive on a working system and I can run a full diagnostic on them before going through all the effort of installing just to find out I have a DOA. So far I'm 0 for 2 with laptop drives. I'm starting to give up.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for Lenovo T61!!

Pros: Competitive Price & Great Reliability Track Record.
Relatively Quick Drive - 98MB/s Read 92MB/s Write per Crystal Disk Mark.
Boot Time: 1m 9s per Soluto & services tweaks

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Installed in my Girlfriends Daughter's Lenovo T61 laptop. The original 80GB drive kicked the bucket and this 250GB drive will make her very happy. 3x the storage...great deal. I also upgraded her to Windows 7 64bit & 3GB of ram. Breathed new life into this old work horse.
