From the price... its a HDD. And you can not open it up and use it as a normal 2.5" drive nor IDE or SATA.

no external power needed, have movies on it that a friend is using in hospital. don't know about backup software(never used on any of my external drives

Yes. All USB ports are backward compatible. It will just transfer at a lower speed.......

Does the USB 3.0 connectivity work with USB 2.0 slots? since I do not have usb 3 inmy laptops.

YES. It is backwards compatible with older USB connector versions. You won't get the high read and write speeds that you would get with a USB3 port, but it should still be faster than a USB2 hard drive on a USB2 port.

If I download a bunch of movies from my PC, can I open them up with my Mac laptop?

Certainly, if the movies are in a format that your Mac can understand. QuickTime will open just about any CODEC, but it is always possible to have a CODEC or format that your Mac does not understand. Even in those cases, you could probably find the CODEC online and install it in QT.

Yes, it's a snap to use.  If you can open the C: Drive on your computer, you can use it.  It's like having another C: drive.

You can probably configure your machine to back up to this drive, but it might be safer and faster to back up to your computer's C: drive and then, regularly, move files to this drive.

Is this hard drive compatible with windows 8.1?

Yes, it is. I just installed 8.1 yesterday and it works just fine. I haven't used the bundled backup software though as I handle my own backups, but I'd wager it would work.
