5 out of 5 eggsA MUST BUY!

Pros: Quiet & Fast, Wish I had this a year ago. Negative reviews were false!, buy buy buy

Cons: Are you kidding, NONE!!!!!

Other Thoughts: I purchased the LaCie 500GB desktop HDD (Hard Disk Drive) for use with my new Aluminum iMac with Time Machine and it works like a dream; it also coordinates with the iMac as well. Use the USB 2.0 connection if you want the automatic shutdown feature. This drive is very quiet and fast despite what some of the reviews say. You must install the software on the disk to use the shortcut button. If you use Time Machine you can throw out the EMC Retrospect backup software folder (if you don’t use it) in the applications folder. Despite what the description says, according to LaCie in Canada who I contacted, this drive also contains a “smart fan” which adjust speeds according to it’s cooling needs. The access light will blink rapidly about 5 times before it starts cooling, which may be several times a day. Overall, I’m buying another for work! Don’t miss this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Quad Interface is great. I needed a drive that would have USB for PC and FireWire for Mac. Transfer speeds seem relatively fast on both. The price was definitely more than reasonable for this size drive.

Cons: The drive could be on the loud side. This doesn't bother me as I use it for backups, so the drive is off most of the time. But I would not be able to sleep in the same room if the drive was in use.

Other Thoughts: I have a MacBook and my fiance has a PC, so I partitioned the drive in 2 (NTFS and HFS+). Works like a charm, I can see, but not edit his files; while he can't see mine (which is awesome). On the mac it works flawlessly with Time Machine. All in all I am extremely happy with the purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsLaCie External 500 GB HD

Pros: I've had 4 other LaCie Hard Drives for several years as well as a some other hard drives. All the LaCie drives are still working great. I have another 500 GB HD the same as I just purchased, that I have owned for over a year. Runs great, quiet. That's why I purchased the LaCie again.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I purchased a eSATA card for the computer to use the eSATA connection on the external HD. I don't know if it's the drive or card, but I have had my monitor flicker after several days use while connected to the eSATA cable.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: None

Cons: Do NOT buy this product. It's funny. I bought this drive as a solid foundation to access all of the Dreamweaver files for about 20 sites I manage in between my work and home computers. I had and was quite happy with a USB My Book. I felt I needed something that waould be more reliable so I bought this drive. Mistake. Huge mistake. Failed after three months. LaCie recommends a data recovery software program they are in PARTNERS with (tell you something?) to get your data back (cost $75) and then send it in for warranty. Bollocks! Never again.

2 out of 5 eggsBroke after 3 months

Pros: Great name, features, and casing.

Cons: Broke after 3 months. It starting making a loud clicking sound. Froze my Mac a couple times too. For the price, these things should last at least 5 years.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: lacie is generally a good company, ive had smaller external drives that worked well

Cons: this 500 gb external is on the verge of crashing
it began clicking after only a week, and the intervals between the clicking noises became smaller and small until after about 2 weeks i had my iMac in sleep mode and the thing was clicking so loud that i woke me up and i immediately ejected it and shut it down, the day before it was removing itself without any notice, causing the improper device removal message to appear and temporarily deleting everything i had stored, i called to speak to lacie and i was on hold for 2 hours only to speak to a useless rep...

3 out of 5 eggsLouder than expected...

Pros: Lots of fast storage.

Cons: Lots of loud activity.

Other Thoughts: Currently the drive is in a vertical position. I will move to a horizontal position to see if it helps the noise problem, but overall it is louder than a WD 500GB MyBook Pro and my Maxtor 1-Touch 160GB. The FW800 cable isn't long enough to really move it very far away from the desktop and with audio recording equipment the noise will definitely be audible. Great performance, but noise level is disappointing.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap Insurance

Pros: Plug and Play on the 24" iMac. Multiple interfaces and lots of storage for a low price point. Cast housing is beefy but a little rough. Matches the new iMac though :) Overall, i'm very pleased with the product.

Cons: None...a little noisy but no biggie. Using the 800 FW interface is a bit slow for backing up 5G worth of data but I usually do it before hitting the sack...again, no biggie.

Other Thoughts: Newbie with Macs so when we started having issues with the new iMovie SW and had to bring it into the apple store several times, I decided to purchase this HD as a backup device...came in handy cause they wiped everything out twice already. backup worked great and we
