1 out of 5 eggsbreaks a lot

Pros: There were no rats in the box when I opened it.

Cons: usb worked but the 400 and 800 FW stopped working in a few days. My slick little passport works with usb and FW 800. It haves a cover for the ports and a small light to tell you when the disk is working. LaCie has non of that. I have 8 or 10 LaCie units. The last few have given me trouble. This last one - 500G ruggred - was the worst and they lied about fixing it when their junior tech crew didn't know what to do. They cost me more than $200.00 I payed for it.

Other Thoughts: I stand by what I say.

2 out of 5 eggsBad purchase

Pros: The drive runs pretty well and does handle booting OS off long distance cables.

Cons: With the setup required, not enough current could be driven, so gave the drive its own separate 5V source. This forced the unit to not meet USB 2.0 standard: section 7.2.1 “No device shall supply (source) current on VBUS at its upstream facing port at any time. From VBUS on its upstream facing port, a device may only draw (sink) current)."

Other Thoughts: Choose a different drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello and thanks for your recent purchase of this external hard drive. This unit does ship with a USB power-sharing cable for laptops that do not provide enough power through the USB bus. That being said you shouldn't have any issues using this cable while using the standard USB cable for data throughput.

If you have any further questions about this or other issues, please call (503) 844-4503 between the hours of 6am and 6pm (Pacific Time) to speak with one of our Technical Support representatives.

1 out of 5 eggsengineering?

Pros: looks pretty

Cons: evrything else. i bought mine over a year ago directly from LaCie and it ran only sometimes. one can format it ntfs but may or may not be read with some versions of linux after my test. the case is very thin. it sez "all terrain" but actually is not sealed at all. the rubber outer piece does not snugly fit.
the specifications on the Toshiba drive they use internally is better than the electronics they wrap around.

Other Thoughts: my one experience(my only LaCie purchase ever) with customer service was unbelievable. there RMA rules is that you return ALL material back with the unit to be repaired. this means the retail box with specifications on how much filler to use around the retail box. the once you have made two labels and insured it is acceptable.

they sent it back with "no problems found" and reformatted NTFS (i had it formatted FAT32 when sent to them). they sent it back in an small, i mean tiny box just a little bigger than the unit WITHOUT the retail box or packing. the box only had a space the width of my thumb around it.

when i contacted them back about my retail box......HUH? you get the picture.......they are not resposible for that stuff. so what does that make them?

i found out just a few months ago that there has been a problem with Toshiba SATA HDD used in these; that, the bearing was faulty.

4 out of 5 eggsProblem Using w/Apple Computers

Pros: First of all, my comments apply to the 160GB version which has been replaced by the 250GB version. The drive has been connected to an Apple iMac to use as a device for the Time Machine backup application. Connected to the Firewire 800 port, it worked very well with no problems except as defined below.

The device appears to be rugged and should work as a backup device for travelers using laptops.

My experience with LaCie products has been excellent and I can recommend this one without much trouble.

Cons: The drive gets quite warm when using either of the Firewire ports. There is also a serious problem when connected to Apple computers using either of the Firewire ports. It is always powered by the Mac even when the Mac is shut down. The only time it isn't powered is when the Mac is unplugged from a power source.

The solution is to use the USB interface which works as you would expect and stops running when the Mac is shut down or put to sleep. Unfortunately, you lose the speed of a Firewire connection.

The problem is obviously not the fault of the LaCie drive.

Other Thoughts: I haven't tried the disk drive with my Gigabyte-based PC to see if it is still powered by the Firewire 400 port when the PC is shut down. I suspect it's not.
