5 out of 5 eggsExcellent RAID for desktop use

Pros: This RAID drive work very well, it is fast, connects to just about anything, it is quiet, has hot swap ability, and is low power. You cannot get a hardware raid with hot swap for much better than this price - unless you want to build it yourself, which is fine (but my time is more important than that).

Cons: Documentation is a little terse, but if you don't know anything about setting up a RAID you might ought to get one of those geek types to do it for you. Read the document, make sure you know what you are doing.

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent bit of hardware - I've been running mine for 8 months without a hitch. It sits under the desk, I don't even know its there, it just works. A lot of the complaints I've read seem overblown by people who didn't understand the product they were buying.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product - Highly reccomended

Pros: Impressive speeds for a RAID array. Sturdy design - runs for hours with data transfers in progress and still quite cool to the touch.

Cons: The documentation issue as mentioned in another review is very true - I can't quite understand what would make LaCie think this information wasn't necessary.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Solution

Pros: Hardware RAID. Dependable. Quiet. Aesthetically Pleasing. LaCie quality. eSATA.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I also felt compelled to write a review after reading those posted here.

I run this beast with an Ubuntu Linux web/fileserver and an eSATA card also sold by LaCie. After reading the instructions, which appears to be a problem for some users, I had zero problems setting up RAID5, and have had none since.

Now remember that this drive is hardware RAID, faster than software RAID for most modes, especially striped modes like RAID5. It's also totally trouble free.

Did I mention LaCie quality and design?

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It looks fancy?

Cons: Garbage to work with. Software doesn't work over eSATA. Blinking light is a joke, it won't tell you anything useful. No real way to tell if an array is ready or not - the light stop blinking fairly fast, but there's no way a 4.5TB array initialized that quick. Finally sent this thing back after it ate a partition and the MFT, losing quite a bit.

Other Thoughts: Avoid - I finally went the file server route instead and came out cheaper.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

Pros: This is my first review here as I felt compelled to respond given the other two rather negative ones. The unit is fast, rock-solid, and has been entirely transparent. I use it in RAID5 to back up a part of a 15TB array (nightly mirrors). I've got a number of similar devices (ReadyNAS mainly - similar, but network interface) and the LaCie is doing a fine job.

Cons: I'd prefer a bit more information on the front than the glowing blue power.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great hardware, quiet, many RAID settings, high capacity.

Cons: Setup documentation is TERRIBLE, as follows:
4. Validate the mode by pushing and holding the front LED button for 2 seconds.
5. Let the drives turn on, and then turn off the 4big, allow it to 5. shut down and turn it back on.

If you have never configured a 4Big, do not perfom step 5 until all the disk lights are on SOLID. (This may take up to 8 hours.)

Not having this information will cost you hours of time diagnosing a wide variety of problems when the LaCie is connected to a computer with incomplete RAID configuration.

2 out of 5 eggshighly overpriced item

Pros: hot swappable drives that you can replace as something overheats, which lacie is known for, many models, firsthand knowledge on that here. also the mac like look is appealing but at 6tb are you really trying to be cute?

Cons: this item is so expensive, you could buy four(4) 1.5TB SEAGATE drives, a cheap barebones pc with a megabit(1000) networking port, a networking hub that support megabit(1000) and a small 19" lcd, even usb keyboard or mouse, even a KVM switch to flip between system 1 and this new system for this price. why? so you can have a reliable power supply and better security for the hard drives, not to mention an additional system, seeing as you have a need for 6tb of info, more than one console to approach it is vital.

Other Thoughts: If you are on the go, this is a good idea, if you buy some foam housing, or rubber housing at a home construction supply store like homedepot. otherwise its way overpriced mac lookalike stuff. this is my opinion on most multidrive casings. they throw in an ok controller card and a weak power supply with very weak airflow, when really for the price you should get a medium size atx case to hold it all and generic power supply. the engineering on these products that are multi drive are such high markup items im amazed more people dont just give them 1 star.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello and thanks for your recent purchase of our LaCie 4Big 6TB RAID system. We take
pride in manufacturing this product as it is one of the most cost effective solutions in the market today. Consider the following advantages of this unit: 200-230MB/s through eSATA; 6 RAID Settings; power settings that save up to 80% more energy, powerful fan and cooling system is 50% more quiet. The technology, performance, and the design of the 4big Quadra make it an ideal addition to any workspace.
