1 out of 5 eggsLaJunk

Pros: Nice design

Cons: Unreliable. Prone to failure.

Other Thoughts: Please, please do not waste your money on this piece of junk. I had my Lacie for less than a year and it constantly had problems mounting onto my computer. The Firewire cable or port must have been faulty. I should have seen it as a warning sign. Now it won't mount AT ALL, even with other cables. I can't recover my data but I hope to spare someone else the heartache and frustration I've experienced with the Lacie. Please read other customer reviews on this site, on the Apple site or on Ama zon.com to confirm that this is a common problem with the Lacie. Do not trust Lacie with your valuable data.

5 out of 5 eggsfast & quiet drive for mac and windows

Pros: - quiet
- firewire and USB connections
- works with both MacOS and Windows 7 after formatting it to have a FAT32 file system
- no external power supply needed

Cons: - I wish that it would have also a USB 3.0 interface, so it will be future-proof for the next 2-3 years.

Other Thoughts: You need to format the drive on a Windows machine to contain a FAT32 file system that occupies the entire drive in order to make it accessible by MacOS and Windows and to use the entire drive in both operating systems.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of junk from WD...be careful

Pros: Great price on a large drive...

Cons: Other than the fact it failed with ton's of info on it?

I bought if for a backup and to put all my music on as.wav files. Takes a long time to do that. Failed after 6 months of limited use.

Backup your backup? That goes on forever. Buy another brand. You'll see this on other WD reviews. Wait til you have all that info in one place and it fails. The cost of the drive doesn't mean anything, even if I return it.

Other Thoughts: what else is there to say. If you like to gamble...buy one.

1 out of 5 eggsNot so Rugged

Pros: When it worked, it held 1TB of data, and it didn't have any extra software on it

Cons: Died about 2 weeks after i got it. Put it through nearly nothing physically. Honestly, if it's labeled as "Rugged" it should be a little more rugged than that.

Other Thoughts: Flew it in a laptop bag with me to Afghanistan. If the non-rugged ASUS laptop made it, then i obviously didn't mistreat the bags. Only used it 3 times before it started with the click of doom. Can't really RMA it from where i am. Maybe bad luck, but enjoy the 1 star that deserve.

3 out of 5 eggsChoose an OS, you only get one

Pros: Very durable, this thing ZOOMS with firewire 800; I've never seen such speed.

Cons: You cannot transfer files between a Mac and a PC without formatting the entire drive (or partitioning--but then you may as well buy 2 500GBs and save yourself the $$). This is a FATAL FLAW.

Other Thoughts: If you only have a Mac, or you only have a PC, get it! I bought one for my Macbook Pro when they had firewire 800 (not sure if they still do as it seems like they come out with a new model during the time it takes them to ship the darn thing over from China). Man, was it blazing fast! As I said, though, you can't use it with a PC and Mac simultaneously.

5 out of 5 eggsRecommended +

Pros: solid, bus powered, fast, attractive, comes with cables

Cons: a bit large, not a pocket drive but still portable. pricey.

Other Thoughts: Drives works excellent as my off site back up . Plug it into my work station once a week for back up. The drive seemed pricey but recently bought a 2TB USB drive for $90 which I now regret despite the larger capacity. Should have paid more for another LaCie. Much more usable. As always Newegg delivered in a day. Although I shop around and look at prices I always come back to Newegg as they are reliable.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best bang for your buck

Pros: I had mine for a couple of years before it was stolen. Not once at any time did it ever give me any problems. If I had the financial resources, I would like to replace this drive. My laptop recognized the drive instantly, Very quiet. Somtimes I almost forgot that it was running

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: As far as I'm concerned Lacie builds the best drives and true to their word they are rugged

5 out of 5 eggsGood Choice for Portable Storage

Pros: I had been a Verbatim swappable hard drive fan for the last 8 years. Their Firewire 400/800 drives are fast, problem free and easy to use. As Verbatim no longer makes a physically small but 1TB swappable storage device, I looked through many alternatives. I decided on the LaCie Rugged 1TB.
Installation/formatting was extremely easy & fast on my MacPro (OSX 10.5.8). Upon rebooting, the MacPro recognized the LaCie Rugged and was instantly ready to back up my computer. I could not have asked for a more problem free experience!
I maintain 3 Macs in my house and a couple others for friends. This is a great choice for toting around massive amounts of back-up data and software easily. The Firewire 800 option is the only way to go as well. You might save a few bucks buying a USB2 swappable drive, but you will hate yourself in the long run for how S-L-O-W they are. This is definitely a positive choice all the way around.

Cons: None? That I had to purchase a separate LaCie Cozy protective case for the LaCie Rugged. For the price of the Rugged, they should include a case.
