5 out of 5 eggsGood USB HDD

Pros: *PC compatibility is great (driver download required), not just for Macs.
*About as small as a standard drive can be. "Pocketable"
*Pretty sexy style
*No surprises on transfer speed
*Future addon adapters to change interface

Cons: *Relativity short USB cord (18in). Also, it is USB Micro-B port in the back of the device. It is less common if you need to swap out a longer cord.
*As a Windows user I had to install the HFS+ driver (HFS4Win.exe from Seagate)

Other Thoughts: Reviewed this unit as a Windows user.
I have to say I really like this drive. It has nice simple aesthetics and is virtually silent sitting on my desk. Although is is a spinning platter HDD it is very portable and slips into my pocket. As usual though, be careful when transporting and be gentle if you must move it around while active.

As a Windows user I had to install the HFS+ drivers which required a restart. After this initial driver install it behaved like any other USB drive on Windows.

It performed well for a 5400 RPM HDD. I was easily getting near 90-100MBs mark on transferring large files over USB3 and around 25MBs over USB2.

The instructional videos included were of laughable quality. If you want to use them just listen or it will hurt your eyes. The included software was a nice touch for those that would use it to quickly upload to Facebook/Flickr and Youtube. They worked fine on my PC but is not something I would normally use.

Overall I would recommend this drive to Mac as well as PC users.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Drive- Lots of Junk Preinstalled

Pros: Nice portable and speedy external drive to use for quick backups and storage. USB 3.0 connection is very nice I cant see myself going back to 2.0 anytime soon.

Speed transfer where expected for this type of drive running in the higher 90+Mbps for solid files and 30-40Mbps on images and music.

Comes with a two year warranty as well being nice and quite. I cant not even hear it on my desk.

Nice little feature as well, is that you can also upload/download pictures and videos from Flickr, Facebook and YouTube. Just select the files you want to upload or download, and ta-da your good to go. It makes things easy when you get back from taking a bunch of pictures and want to upload them to an account.

Cons: The drive comes loaded with 825MB of preinstalled junk software and how to videos that more or less are very useless and will cause you a bunch of hassle in the long run.

There was even a damaged installer for the dashboard on there as well. SeaGate I really don't think people need a .dmg.exe that wont even run.

I just went all out and formatted the drive so that I could start out with a fresh drive without all the junk. Then I just download the dashboard software from there website. No sense having all that junk.

The how to videos on there where a very very poor quality. Im talking 320-128 resolution. Terrible and worthless.

Another annoying feature is the HFS+ driver for windows and the fact that you need to restart the machine after installing the driver. I feel like you shouldn't have to restart the machine just because you install a driver for a external hdd.

Now I want to stress this is not a huge deal but this is why i took an egg off.

Other Thoughts: All in all, once I formatted the drive everything worked great. It didn't blow my mind as this is a very standard piece of hardware.

With that being said I do really like the drive, it performs well, its quite and its not very expensive. I think this would be a great external HDD for any user.

Though you might want to format the drive before using it to remove the almost 1Gb of junk files.

5 out of 5 eggsMuch better than my first

Pros: Good price for tons of storage

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I originally bout a 500GB Seagate Hard Drive from Best Buy, but I had to take it back within 2 days because it wasn't accessible when it was plugged in. I bought this one from Newegg and it has worked perfectly.

5 out of 5 eggs1TB of modern art

Pros: very portable: is small enough for your pocket, is tough enough for your journey.
very nice looking: has a "cool" modern look, nice finish.
USB 3.0 with interchangeable interface options.
works great with Windows 7 & 8.

Cons: 5400rpm. very short cable.

Other Thoughts: i have been carrying this drive in my pocket through many days and have left it in my truck over some 80+° days with the windows up out in the parking lot, it has sustained no external or internal damage, very rugged.

USB 2.0 speeds fluctuate from 15MBs-25MBs.
USB 3.0 from 30MBs-50MBs. has spiked near 100MBs but never long.

5 out of 5 eggsSharp Backup Drive

Pros: Pros:
1. Smart looking white case. This is an attractive unit for sitting on your desk or to take with you.
2. Decent storage capacity for a portable device. 1 TB drive provides lots of capacity.
3. USB 3.0 cable for connection (will handle USB 2.0). Fast speed sure cuts down on time spent waiting for your drive to backup. USB connection provides power for device.
4. Works well with Mac Timeline function ==> super-easy and straightforward.
5. Works well with Windows. Just use Dashboard Backup function.
6. Dashboard software is provided for uploading to Facebook, Flickr, and Youtube and downloading from Facebook and Flickr. This software is pretty straightforward and works really well. The new version of the Dashboard software gives much better control for backup of Windows systems that the original version did not. You do not need to depend on the
7. Three manuals are available: (1) Backup Plus Desktop Quick Start Guide, (2) Backup Plus Desk Mac Data Sheet, (3) Seagate Dashboard User Guide. These manuals are self-explanatory and decently written.
8. Software for Windows use is available on the Seagate website: (1) Backup Plus for Mac Software (HFS4Win.exe) for use with Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit), (2) Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit), (3) Windows XP.

Cons: You must download the HFS software from the Seagate site to be able to see the drive on a Windows system.

Other Thoughts: I used this with a Windows 7 Professional desktop AND with a MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo CPU/2GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory/250 GB HD/Mac OSX 10.6 laptop.
The Seagate Backup Plus is supplied in the NFTS format. To connect with the PC, you must first download the HFS4Win.exe software from the Seagate site. under Downloads. This Windows software allows a Backup Plus for Mac drive to mount as a drive letter in Windows without having to reformat.
If you want to use the Mac Timeline function AND Windows backup with this Seagate backup drive, it is important that you CAREFULLY follow the directions (How to setup a Backup Plus or GoFlex drive for use under MacOS) on page .
Download the HFS software from page
If you want to do backups of Windows and Mac devices, it is handy to partition the drive into HFS and NFTS sections. However, you do not need to. When you backup either a Mac or Windows system, separate file folders are setup…pretty cool. If you want to just use the backups for Mac only then simply select Timeline for Mac.
The initial backup for a Mac with 36 GB content took 43 minutes using a USB 2 connection on the Mac. The corresponding rate was 13.82 MB/sec. The initial backup on a Windows 7 Pro machine with 182 GB content using a USB 3 connection took 5.27 hours for a transfer rate of 9.62 MB/sec., a slow rate.
An updated Dashboard file of 90MB size had to be downloaded to use that function. The Dashboard uploading and downloading functions worked adequately. The updated Dashboard file now provides capability to manage backups for Windows that originally was just provided for Mac backups. Originally, you had to use the Windows Control Panel Backup function. The new method works great.
Transferring files from a Windows 7 system to the Seagate backup drive HFS formatted section of the drive also worked correctly.
All in all, this Seagate drive performed decently with both Mac and Windows 7 systems.
The manuals and instructions provided on the Seagate website for the backup hard drive were appropriate for the tasks performed. I am pleased with the performance of this device. I really look forward to using this in the future.

4 out of 5 eggsSeagate Backup Plus 1TB USB3 External Desktop HDD

Pros: The Seagate Backup Plus arrived in excellent condition. I overall, found the drive to be slightly bulky, however it does contain a full sized desktop, 7,200 RPM, 64MB cached drive inside the enclosure. The bottom plate detaches to show the USM module and allows for connecting USB3, Firewire, and Thunderbolt via separate adapters purchased through Seagate.

The drive comes with a 2 year warranty, registered from a form already on the drive once plugged in. Registration was effortless and fast.

I did not choose to review the Dashboard software since I had covered it in previous reviews, however the installers were identical to the portable drives.

This external HDD is usable on both PC and Mac and includes the EXE and DMG installers for both applications.

Performance was excellent, with burst rates of 300-600MB+/sec and standard copying of files (MP3s and game data directories) at over 100MB/sec with using USB 3. USB 2 speeds were a solid 30-35MB/sec and saturated the connection.

Drive temperature was fine, around 40C.

Drive was quiet and while I could feel the constant vibration on my desk through the enclosure, I did not hear it clicking away so the good news is it’s pretty quiet overall if noise is a concern.

Please keep in mind it requires both the AC adapter and USB / USM cable to be attached before the drive will power on and spin up. It will light and spin up only once the USB cable is attached, even if the power is already connected.

If you’re doing any Fraps recording, HD photo or video work, or anything else needing a desktop class drive and have run out of internal bays, this would be a superb choice to look at for an external drive. 1TB might not be enough space but they do make the drives in larger capacities. Anything short of 10K RPM drives or SSD probably won’t touch the performance you will be able to get out of this drive given a fast enough processor. It’s 5 Egg certainly in performance – just that it falls short in other areas; please see below.

Cons: While I do feel that Seagate did plenty right with the drive, there are a couple big caveats preventing me from giving the drive 5 eggs.

--The USM Module itself is a neat idea to swap different connectors to the bottom plate of the drive but if you want to use Firewire or Thunderbolt, you need to purchase a separate adapter directly from Seagate or its partner stores for nearly $180 as of 11-28-12.

--The USM front plate is a very tight connection and fits snugly to the rest of the hard drive. The downside is that even though the SATA data and power connectors are standard like internal ones, good luck trying to make any internal plug fit – it won’t. This pretty much rules out using the drive as an internal drive for any desired reason short of maybe destroying the entire casing which I did not want to do. External use only!

--You can’t really use this hard drive without the casing. I found no way short of destroying the case to remove the HDD.

--The base plastic near where the adapters plug in is a little thin and it feels like a good bump might crack or snap some of the enclosure off. Otherwise the rest of the casing is plastic and slick looking. It won’t survive a hard fall but it does look nice.

--The SS (interface) cable for my drive had USB3 on one end and a special rectangular plug on the other. This precludes it from being swapped with other products or devices since the end appears proprietary. If you travel a lot, be sure to keep the cable plugged into the drive or always with it since a regular USB cable will not fit the USM module if the original is lost! Thus, one could feasibly be stranded with their data on the drive with a delay in accessing it if the cable goes missing.

--Due to needing the greater power of a desktop class HDD, the USB cable isn’t able to provide enough power. I know this is a common thing with external drives but the fact you need to clutter your strip or block with another AC adapter/ wall wart is mildly annoying. Something else to keep track of and lose. Adapter is a 0.6A input and 1.5A output at 120v.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I’m very happy with this drive. There are some negatives, sure, but it shouldn’t really affect the daily usage or enjoyment of the drive once it’s plugged in and sitting stationary. To use this drive on anything less than USB3 is folly and customers should look for better capacities and prices elsewhere if you’re on USB2 or otherwise limited.

The included Dashboard software may not clone your drive but it does serve as a great way for an average user who might have one HDD to allow the software to automate a backup routine – presuming they even have one for their data.

The fact that Dashboard allows to grab full resolution photos from Flickr and Facebook is a wonderful option for someone who might not have their local photos any more. It noticed it did download the original full size photo if it was originally uploaded in high quality so that’s a great thing to see.

If instead you’d just rather have a nice portable backup drive for data, simply forego the software (or keep it installed and turn off the services) and enjoy. Registration is done from within the software’s installation screen and took a minute at most.

Also included is a free 1TB worth of Seagate Cloud backup (accessible via email).

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Very Well

Pros: When I first opened the package I was very pleased with the the look of the drive. It almost perfectly matched the color scheme of my Mac. And even my older all white iMac matches thanks to the white accents on the drive. The drive performs very well. On both my Mac and PC this drive sustained 110MB/s transfer speeds. Backwards compatibility is very nice, since my older Mac only has USB2.0 ports. I like the fact that this drive works with Windows as well. You have to install the Seagate software for Windows to read the HFS+ file system, but it is a very nice feature that Seagate includes this feature for free. Normally to get this functionality the software costs extra. It is also very nice that you can upgrade this drive's connector by removing the adapter at the end of the drive. I'll be receiving a Thunderbolt Macbook Pro shortly, and I can't wait to use this drive with it after I buy the Thunderbolt upgrade adapter for this drive.

Cons: The biggest problem with this drive is the cable, it is way to short. I'd expect at least a 3 foot cable, but this one is barely over a foot. The other problem I have with this drive is that when you remove the USB 3.0 adapter you can see that SATA data and power connectors. However you can't connect to this drive using those connectors because they are recessed. It would be nice to be able to access those connectors.

Other Thoughts: I'm very pleased with this drive. Being compatible with both Mac and Windows extremely useful. Before this I had to use a FAT32 formatted drive, which limited file sized to 4GB or less. This drive eliminates that and that is wonderful. This drive is compatible with every computer possible, and that is wonderful.
