1 out of 5 eggsReview update. Failing

Pros: -It's been a great drive. See pros in it's glory months on page two of these reviews.

-If the drive, itself, really is failing and there's no option to replace it, then at least there's a 3.5'' USB3.0 enclosure to use for another drive, eh?

-This drive + my 2TB Seagate Central NAS has been the backbone of my home media sharing library. Such a delight to be able to supply 5TB of data at quick speeds to all my devices and to my daughters tablet.

Cons: Less than 18 months and it's failing.

Random corrupt sectors. Glitching video playback.
All the signs of a failing hard drive except no beeping or clicking. I've listened attentively and there isn't any abnormal noise. I have hope still...

-It's a "backup" drive. I would think it would have a bit of data integrity...but it's failing before any of my other drives that are years older and that arguably have not been treated as delicately as I have afforded it the luxury to have been..

Other Thoughts: I've used this thing GENTLY. And by this I mean it has sat nicely tucked away and plugged into my Seagate Central STCG2000100 2TB Cloud Storage System (Item#: N82E16822178318) for a better part of a year or so. Out of sight and hidden behind furniture. It couldn't be bumped, dropped, kicked, or anything. It's happily supplied media through copper to my game consoles and desktop and wireless to my tablet, phone, and laptop.

Before that, it was hidden away behind my tower and right now it is as well. I'm continuously running 'chkdsk /r' trying to salvage what I can of my ripped DVD/Bluray TV show collection.

I started getting file availability errors over my SMB/CIFS share last week. It was odd..because the files were there..So I investigated and sure enough the filesystem was corrupting. Boo. chkdsk repair helped briefly. I lost a few files but all was mostly good. It seemed like an isolated incident...

Now it is three days later and it is having the same problems with other files. So going to start the process of salvaging and re-wiping a slow reformat to see if I can get it to work properly but I am definitely going to keep some redundancy for a while until it proves or disproves it's worth...

I don't consider myself a Seagate fanboy, per se, but I have all Seagate drives. The Central backup and a few 2TB internals for my desktop that are a few years old. I've heard rumor that SG changed their lineup and the newer drives are poor quality...if this 3TB drive in the backup belongs to that family then it would hold true. Because I haven't had any troubles with my pre-Thailand-flood-era internals...and one of them traveled around the world with me in an enclosure...

4 out of 5 eggsGood for 32-bit Windows XP

Pros: 1. Got about 120MB/s on USB 3.0 transferring 2TB data at once.
2. Drive turns off automatically when the PC is turned off.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I am using this 3TB for Mac drive for 32-bit Windows XP. Interestingly, there is no need to install DiscWizard from Seagate to access the full capacity. The only thing that is necessary to install is Seagate's windows driver to allow the "for Mac" drives to work on windows (i.e., HFS4Win.exe from Seagate website). That's pretty convenient.

3 out of 5 eggs10.8.5 Workaround really?!

Pros: works after a os configuration modification.

Cons: External drive ejects at sleep causing Time Machine to fail. Errors with "Disk was not ejected properly".

workaround is to touch the drive every minute.
google: Keep Drive Spinning macos

Other Thoughts: Just OK.

4 out of 5 eggsMet technical expectations, looks good

Pros: - Good price
- Lots of storage
- *No need to reformat for Mac use*
- Includes several adaptors for travel
- Looks good - especially with MacBook Pro

Cons: - Plug takes up more than one "slot" on a power strip

Other Thoughts: Had quite the debate between this product and a similar drive with an all-alumninum enclosure. While I thought the other product looked better at the time, I went along with this one because of price. In the end, I am very happy with the purchase - it actually looks very nice sitting next to my MacBook Pro (I keep it plugged in all the time for periodic Time Machine synching).

1 out of 5 eggsupdate again:

Pros: ...

Cons: power block attached to the bottom of drive stopped working. detached and plugged straight to motherboard & psu and drive showed up as blank RAW drive, all data lost.

Other Thoughts: seagate has been giving me the runaround about help. keep offering data recovery services BUT: you only get a demo version of the service. if data is recoverable you have to pay $99.00 to actually TRY and recover it, no guarantees it will be usable data.

4 out of 5 eggsSecond was a winner

Pros: 3T duh. Who doesn't need 3000GB

Cons: My first drive was defective and I had to send it back to newegg. The second one I receive works 100% fine and does what I need it to.

2 out of 5 eggsupdate for BackupPlus 3TB

Pros: large. USB 3.0. nice looking.

Cons: after a couple months of normal use:
problems being recognized at boot and after wakeup a lot of the time.
1 partition is now undetected by Windows 7 desktop or Windows 8 laptop. a 2nd partition is undetected some of the time.
speeds have started to drop from around 100MBs to around 20MBs over USB 3.0 some of the time.

Other Thoughts: the 2 partitions that Windows fails to detect are accessible through 1 wireless access hub I have if it's attached but my desktop nor my laptop can read\write when directly connected via USB cables. no options but delete for these partitions in Windows Manager.

getting very nervous about the 2TB+ of files I have stored on this thing. am now starting to slowly move them back to my internal drives and other storage devices before this thing stops working completely. will give it the benefit of the doubt and hope it's just accidental partition structure corruption and will reformat and construct after i've rescued all my files and retest over time.
