4 out of 5 eggsPretty NIce

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102

Pros: Super Thin, slim, whatever you want to call it is not not big at all. Very Portable.

USB 3.0 is a must for data transfer, and this has it. Did a transfer of my itunes to this (14days of music) did some dishes and it was done.

Intuitive "dashboard", every easy to use and navigate. Cheesy but good videos on Seagate website for usage as well.

500gb decent storage for on the go use.

Seems well built and stable. Didn't do a drop test but would shake it some while transferring data, no problems.

No reformatting going from pc to mac or vise versa.

Cons: Loss of storage space with having to download for Window use. Pretty minor though.

If promoting switching from OS to OS then it should be ready out of box and not suffer storage.

Other Thoughts: A very decent product. I do like Seagate though anyway and trust their quality. The social network stuff is neat but kind of lame for a 500gb. Imo, if anyone has pictures, music, and movies they will need much more than 500gb.

Keep in mind it seems to be built for on the go applications. Sturdy, stable, very portable. Decently priced.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for Mac, not so bad for Win

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102

Pros: Solid Piece and feels on par in terms of quality with the Seagate GoFlex Backup Plus Portable hard drives (I like these so much I have 3x 1TB) This SLIM is almost half the thickness of the Expansions.

1. Very compact, roughly the size of an iPhone 4 in terms of length and thickness but it is slightly wider.
2. Excellent finish and build quality. I really like the finish on the Seagate portable hard drives.
3. The MAC version will blend in VERY, VERY nicely with any of your aluminum apple products.
4. So far, Seagate has not failed me in terms of reliability so that's why I keep coming back. I have a combination of over 30 Seagate hard drives of either 2TB or 3TBs plus 4 Seagate portable drives and countless other laptop drives. So far so good.

Performance on work Intel Core i5-3570K :
Windows (HD Tune Pro) Wasn't letting me test write for some reason :/
Avg Read: 88.2 MB/s
Write Speed via 2gb file: ~150-190 MB/s
Access Time: 17.1ms

Mac OS X 10.8.4
Write: ~160MB/s-190MB/s

Cons: 1. Cables are not very long, 18in (typical sata length, more than enough for laptops but can be a bit short for your desktops. The length is more than adequate for those iMac users as well.
2. Not really a con but Slim drives only go up to 500gb

Other Thoughts: Either way, mac or windows, this is a good drive if you need to use it on both systems. You will need to download software for it on the Windows but afterwards, it will be flawless.

Because this drive is the slim model, the highest capacity you can get at the time of the review is 500gb. If you need more than that, I highly recommend the Seagate Backup Plus.

If the size is right for you, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for Macs and crossplatforms

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102

Pros: 1. The drive has a small foot print.
2. It looks good.
3. It is fairly fast.
4. It works well with Mac
5. Easily portable.
6. Comes with a cable
7. Do not need a power cable to make it work

Cons: 1. To get this drive to work on windows, you have to download a software package.
2. I could never get this drive to work on as a network drive with my router's usb port. The windows driver's issue above is probably the reason for this. Most people would not use this drive in that capacity anyways.
3. Transfer speeds suffered on windows computers (5% to 10% hit for the software). Still beats USB 2.0 by light years.
4. Cable is short (seems to be designed to work with laptops.
5. Drivers were not included with the drive for windows - you have to down load them at seagate. Look for the +HSF drivers

Other Thoughts: I tired this drive on 2 different windows computers. Both had USB 3.0, and they had different USB 3.0 controllers. I only had one mac available to me. It did find on both windows computers that there was a slight drop in performance.

If you area mac owner, this is a good drive. If you own both macs and windows machines, and you need to integrate your drives then this is a good machine as well.

If you only own windows machine a different drive would be better for you.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive, but Shouldn't Need Drivers

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102

Pros: The drive is aesthetically on point with the whole Apple hardware look and feel. The drive definitely is true to it's word about being slim, the finish feels of high quality and has a nice silver to it, and the white power LED is a nice touch and not overbearing like other drives.

Bringing the drive over to Win7 did not cause any initialization issues with mountain the drive, I have seen similar dual OS externals doing some un-wanted formatting of drives after being in the OSX environment.

USB3 Cable does NOT required an additional tie in for power like many other USB drives.

Cons: Could not get to the drive right away after receiving it due to some technical issues with my OSX unit.

On OSX Mountain Lion setting up Timeline was basically fool proof, the drive was detected by the OS right away and ready to backup almost instantly. No formatting involved, nor was the drive full of garbage data that I have become accustomed to with external drives.

Cons: As always, the cable is too short to be comfortable without some kind of extension or hub. If you have your computer under a desk prepare to get up close and personal, there is barely enough cable to plug the drive into the back of the motherboard and have it rest comfortably near by.

500GB is kind of on the small end but for the price the quality is there.

Getting the drive to cooperate on Windows 7 OS took some finagling. You have to go to Seagate's website to get the +HSF drivers for it to work, which wasn't a big deal but I have a feeling the average user could see it as an issue.

Other Thoughts: Could you not get to the drive right away after receiving it due to some technical issues with my OSX unit. My apologies for the delay!

Good transfer speeds using HD Speed Tester - All tests are averages of 02:00 of testing.

103.8 MB/s - Read

106.6 MB/s - Write

64.7 MB/s - Read + Write

66.5 MB/s - Read + Write + Verify

What I focused on mostly was using the drive as a Timeline Device, using the drive as a music library storage for Traktor Kontrol, and temporary processing storage for GoPro Cineform Studio.

For being a 5400 rpm hdd, the drive performed well with Traktor, not lagging behind when I would add music to decks and seek through the info. Analyzing the bmp and pitch in the library also kept up with the internet HDD from what I noticed.

Converting video was a slightly different story, as my conversion speeds near doubled when doing the final export of video from the USB location to the internal desktop storage media. I guess that should be expected though, but with the read/write speeds I was testing with I predicted otherwise.

All in all, a solid drive for the money. Especially if you are into having even more compact storage than was already available. Get one!

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate STCF500102

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102

Pros: I thought my WD drive was tiny. This drive makes it look like a pig. This is only about 1/4" thin and about the size of a playing card. I was honestly stunned when I took it out of it's box. Installed the software on my Windows 7 machine and now my new Windows 8 machine in just a couple minutes. I ordinarily HATE included software with hard drives but wanted to try it before deleting it to honestly be able to review it. Turns out I LOVE this software and it will be kept. This software is called Dashboard. It even includes several built in videos that show you how to use every feature of this dive. It gives me all the assorted choices on doing backups, is clear & EASY to understand and use.

The portion of the software I found most unusual and enjoyable to use is for Saving items shared on Social Networking. It asked for my permission to access my Facebook, Twitter & YouTube accounts, I gave it and entered my passwords. I was actually shocked to see some of the pictures & videos I had placed on my Facebook page years ago & had forgotten about.. Anyway, it is a great tool for me anyway. Now the YouTube software I do NOT care for since while it does let me upload directly etc, it lacks all the options I choose when doing it directly. I want to pick & choose a title for my videos as well as set my preferences when I upload as to who can comment, vote etc. I also want to choose what category it plays in etc. So, while it offers this feature to at least upload, it is a bare bones tool that still forces me to go back into my account manually anyway so that I can set these items to MY preferences. As a result, I won't be using this feature but nice that it is there I suppose?

Average read and write times about what other reviewers are getting..

Cons: None..

Other Thoughts: None..

5 out of 5 eggsFast, tiny, PC and Mac friendly - Awesome.

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102

Pros: This drive is small, fast, and works flawlessly on both Mac and PC. Yup - you can transfer files seamlessly from a Mac and PC to this drive by downloading the free HFS+ for Windows driver supplied by Seagate. This driver normally costs $20 through the manufacturer's website in the form of downloadable software. Great deal - excellent functionality for those of us in a multi-OS computing environment.

Again, this drive is small! It is slightly shorter, slightly wider, and the same depth as an iPhone 5. The drive has a sleek finish, with matte black plastic underneath and Mac Pro-esque matte silver aluminum on top. There is a small, thin, white light on top that illuminates when in use. The drive comes with a USB 3.0 cable with standard Type A connection on one end, and Type B micro connection on the drive end.

Here is a breakdown of the speeds I received when transferring files to/from my Windows 7 64-bit PC via USB 3.0:

115 MB/sec sustained write speeds, 150 MB/sec read speeds. 25 GB Blu Ray .MKV test file took 3.5 minutes to transfer.

Here is a breakdown of the speeds I received when transferring files to/from my Mac Pro 3,1 2008 Snow Leopard via USB 2.0:

32 MB/sec sustained write speed, 38 MB/sec sustained read speed.

All in all, this is a great drive. It is small, sleek, fast, and offers 500 GB of storage space, which is pretty good for most users - professionals included. To top it off, the free HFS+ driver allows for PC and Mac compatibility, which is a huge plus in my book.

Highly recommended!

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is an EggXpert review.

5 out of 5 eggsA Neat Drive

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102

Pros: The nice thing about this drive is that it is truly portable and ready to go for a Mac user. You only need the included usb 3.0 cable, which unlike many portable hard drives only uses 1 usb port. There are no AC adapters or non-standard USB cables involved.

When connected to USB 3.0, it can read and write very quickly. (Over 100MB/s! See other thoughts about MB vs mb).

The drive is small and light and looks great paired with a Mac or other ultrabook.

It's got a gyro sensor to park the heads to prevent data loss when you move a lot.

Cons: It's advertised to work with a Mac or a PC. The truth is that you have to install special drivers or format the drive to work on both. It's also not clear what you have to download to make it work.

The easiest way to make it truly universal is to format the drive with exFat, although this will eat up some of your space and may not perform as well.

This isn't really a problem with the drive, but it shouldn't be advertised the way it is.

You can't easily open the enclosure and replace the drive.

It uses a fair amount of power.

Other Thoughts: This drive works a lot better when it is using USB 3.0.

1MB = 8mb = ~8000000 bits

Speed are often advertised in mb and measured in MB. Interesting huh?

5 out of 5 eggsBlazing fast

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102

Pros: As it is advertised for use with a mac it comes preloaded with HFS+ file system. In order to get it to work with windows you will need HFS+ drivers. Drivers for windows are available at Seagate's website. Linux mint negatively supports read only mount, but in order to write files on Linux box, journaling should be turned off.
This little drive is very fast. It is faster than my buffalo ultra slim 500 GB portable which is very similar to this Seagate in terms of features and usage.
Crystal disk mark results:
Seq read 114.4 MB/s Seq write 114.5 MB/s
512k random read 41.8 MB/s 512K r andom write 52.6 MB/s
ON real world test it really excelled than the aforementioned competing product. I was able to achieve 89.4 MB/s write speed while transferring 104.4 GB from my raid 5 storage unit.
The drive uses micro USB 3.0 port which is very sturdy compared to previous gen micro USB 2.0. USB 3 makes this drive not only fast but also backward compatible. Some fellow eggxperts have mentioned that the connection port and cable is proprietary which is not true. The port is the standard micro USB 3 so any aftermarket micro USB cable would work if you lose the provided cable.
Design wise this drive is very slick. It is thin and light weight which makes it ideal for travel. I might as well admit that I think it is beautiful.
On the box it says for 2 years warranty but on newegg's product detail page it is listed as 3 years. I would assume the retail box warranty to be the actual one. Newegg might have to fix the issue. Regardless 2 years warranty is better than some other manufacturers are providing.

Cons: My only concern is the length of USB cable. It is only 18 inches which makes a little bit tedious to work with when the front usb ports are placed on top of the front panel of a 22 Inch high case.

Other Thoughts: A very well made and designed portable HDD. Works with mac as well as PC. I definately recommend it to anybody looking for portable storage not oly for mac but for PC users as well.

5 out of 5 eggsPerformance pro

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102

Pros: This is a nice 500gb slim usb external hard drive.

Performance is outstanding, (one small quirk see con for details)
Transfer speeds are on par and speedy.
Is able to be used with mac or windows (with small driver download from Seagate)
The instructions for setting this drive up and using it on windows pc's is very user friendly.
Makes for a nice storage drive for a laptop, (see other thoughts for this)

Cons: I had one small hiccup with this drive.
While using video encoding software, burning a video file direct from the slim usb drive caused bluescreens and memory dumps, but only when trying to burn video files straight from the drive. Downloading files straight to the drive and using any files direct worked perfectly.

Other Thoughts: I set this drive up on my acer 5560 laptop with a square piece of Velcro that fit exactly to its size. Have it attached to the top of my laptop and constantly plugged in, so when I close the laptop the drive is always there and goes wherever I need it to with no dangling.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat External

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive for MAC 500GB USB 3.0 STCF500102

Pros: 500GB
Nice size storage capacity for an external hard drive.

USB 3.0
I had consistent write speeds of 100MB/s coming from a normal 7200rpm hard disk drive. Transfered about 60GB worth of files in under 10 minutes.

Not only is it as small as my cell phone, it does not need an external power supply. This is a lot easier to use and transport. This makes me happy.

Cons: The only con is if you are a windows PC user. To use this drive you have to go to Seagates website and download, and install a file for the hard drive to be usable on PC's.

Doing this is extremely easy and straight forward, but you will have to do this for every PC you intend to use the hard drive on. For MAC users you will not have to do this simple step. It is also really cool that you can use this hard drive with both PC and MAC, that is why this is still a 5 egg item.

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend getting this external drive for both PC and MAC users, and especially if you use both.
