5 out of 5 eggsNice

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 4 TB, 7,200 RPM, simple to install

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: Bought this to upgrade the 5400 rpm 2 TB storage drive in my Alienware X51. Only recognizes 3750 GB's but that's normal I found. Works great and quiet too.

5 out of 5 eggsSome DOAs but otherwise, a good drive

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Large capacity, decent speed

Cons: I purchased 4 of these drives to add to a RAID array. Two of the drives arrived DOA.

Other Thoughts: If you don't have a Seagate customer service account, get one. For 10 dollars, they will send you replacement drives, and a return label assuming the drive is under warranty. Bad hardware happens, and it doesn't take a lot of money to get it replaced. I have had a lot of good experience with Seagate RMA support.

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate ST4000VN000 4TB NAS HDD

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: - Quiet
- No Failures or Bad Sectors.
- Inexpensive on Sale.
- PnP

I have 7 of the Seagate 4TB 5900rpm HDD's in servers for more than 2 years. I use them in media servers and regularly write 20-50GB of files to them on a daily basis. So far, I have had no drive failures.

Cons: - Access time when first spinning up from sleep is longer than for 7200rpm drives.
- Price has not dropped in more than 1 year.
- Can't tell the difference between the NAS version and the standard Internal HDD version.
- Read/Write speed is slower than for the Seagate 7200rpm drives.

Other Thoughts: I was able to get the NAS version of the Seagate 4TB 5900rpm drive for the same price ($139) as the regular internal 4TB drive so I decided to try them out.

I have to admit that I cannot tell the difference between the NAS version and the standard internal HDD version of this drive. Access times and Read/Write speeds are the same in the same server configuration. Quite frankly, I am not sure if there is a difference.

That said, I have been very happy with the reliability of these Seagate 4TB HDD's. I have been running these in servers in raid 0,1, and 5 configurations for almost two years without failures. I cannot complain about reliability.

As stated above, the access times and Read/Write speeds are slower than for the Seagate 7200rpm 3TB drives that I have. The HGST 7200rpm 4TB drives are also faster, as should be expected. 4TB HGST drives are US$20-US$30 more expensive on sale than the Seagate 5900rpm drives so I use the Seagate drives for media server applications. They are fast enough to simultaneously allow streaming of 5 separate videos without hangups or allow reading of video streams while writing to the drive at up to 70MB/sec on a gigabit ethernet connection.

The price of HDD's have not really changed in the last couple years. I have been buying 4TB Seagate drives on sale for US$139 for that long and I am hoping that, with the introduction of 5TB and 6TB HDD's, the price will start to drop for the 3TB and 4TB drives.

I also own and use WD Red HDD's, WD Black HDD's, Toshiba HDD's, and HGST HDD's. My experiences with these Seagate HDD's in 2TB, 3TB, and 4TB sizes is that they are as reliable as the WD, Toshiba, and HGST HDD's. I recommend them as a good value/performance HDD.

2 out of 5 eggsI'm not so sure

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Seems like a good amount of storage for a good price.
Quiet. Runs cool.

Cons: 2 of 5 failed. One spun up, but upon powering back on, got nothing at all. Not sure what was up with that. Kind of sad, considering these were packaged pretty darn well, with nifty bubble wrap things inside simple boxes.

Other Thoughts: Overall, a good deal, but test them well.
Slightly lighter in weight than another brand's 4TB drive, not sure if they're using one less platter here, with fancy new helium tech used in the 6TB drives.

Problems with one drive was related to not spinning up correctly - not sure what the deal was, but it made some interesting sounds while trying to do its thing.

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Quiet
4TB Storage Space
Very low vibration; as advertised

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: This drive is the quietest and largest disk I have purchased to date. perfect with a second in my RAID 1 which is right under my desk. Cannot hear the drives at all from 5 feet away.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks good, but watch out for possible Intel RST RAID bugs

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: These drives are probably the fastest mechanical drives I have seen when it comes to sequential read and write speeds because of the density.
I purchased 3 drives and I have had them for 2 months, and they are quiet and reliable. No weird noises, etc. Very good for large capacity RAID arrays. These work ok in Sandy Bridge to Haswell Intel RST RAID setups, however see the other thoughts below.

Cons: I haven't encountered anything bad about these yet.
The first 3 I got had no lemons, and I plan to order 2 more later to expand the RAID once I run out of space on these.
The only real con is that my RAID5 is so huge it isn't recognized under Linux yet, but this will probably get fixed in a few months.

Other Thoughts: I want to warn potential buyers that when I used these in the Intel RST RAID5, the capacity was so large it would cause a BSOD when accessing the RAID status and management application, on every RST version newer than 10.8. I have seen this BSOD on both Sandy Bridge Z68 and Haswell Z87 machines. I am in contact with Intel to fix this problem, but until it is fixed you might experience BSODs in Intel RST with any combination of 4 TB drive RAID setups, so be warned if you plan to use them this way.

5 out of 5 eggs100% Satisfaction!

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I purchased 5 for my Synology 1513+ NAS and they all are working fine. Cool, Quiet and reliable. Performance great! I also have one in my desktop and I can see no "Real World" difference in performance between these drives and my other drives whose media spins at 7200 RPM.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: New Egg does a great job. Keep up the good work!
