2 out of 5 eggsHalf of my drives were DOA

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Great price
my first batch of them worked great.

Cons: 3 out of 12 drives I purchased were DOA.

Other Thoughts: I really loved these drives at first. I had four of them in a NAS setup that ran great. I decided to built a larger NAS so I ordered 8 more of them. I was only able to connect 8 originally but connected only 6 while I waited for my SAS expander to arrive. The expander took over a month to arrive. The 6 drives that weren't connected at first were put in a drawer still in their anti-static bags.
Today I got the SAS expander installed and everything connected. 3 of the drives that had been sitting were DOA. I originally thought it was a power supply or something else, but after eliminating all other possibilities I realized it was the drives were DOA.
Unfortunately they were purchased over a month ago so I can't just return them to NewEgg.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 5 months of light usage

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 4TB at an ok price

Cons: Did not last long

Other Thoughts: Bought two of these to upgrade my old 2TB drives. They run cool and quite. One day my computer would not boot. Took an hour of troubleshooting to determine the Seagate 4tB NAS was preventing it from booting (it was a secondary storage drive). Unplugged the power and my system was fine. Tried plugging it in again and system would freeze. There goes all my data.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Tim,

We apologize for the problems experienced with your 4TB NAS drive, as this is not typical or expected. We would like the opportunity to talk with you to determine the root cause and available resolution.

5 out of 5 eggsSome of the better Seagate HDD I've used..

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: - Price point was great on the 4TB version with the Newegg sale that frequently comes up!
- Of the 10 I purchased, I have had ZERO problems with any of them.
- Work flawlessly in my Synology NAS.

Cons: - Surprisingly none. I would have expected a few duds out of 10, but no problems.

Other Thoughts: - I was a little concerned about purchasing anymore Seagate HDDs after my terrible experience with multiple 3TB DESKTOP drives. Reading around the web an whatnot, there did appear that the 3TB Desktop drives had a number of issues, but these 4TB NAS drives seem to not have the same problems.

- I've had x10 (2-disk fault tolerance) 4TB NAS HDDs running for well over a year on my DiskStation that gets fairly heavy usage from multiple users about everyday. These drives are still performing great just like the the day I installed them. No doubt I will be needing to replace drives down the road at some point (as with any NAS), but I have yet to see any indication of having to do this anytime soon. Everything shows 100% Healthy in my monthly reports.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS drives

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I have had 8 of these mamajammas chugging away in my Synology DiskStation for over a year and have not had one single problem with them. *knock on wood*

I don't think I've ever had such problem free drives before, especially not 8 of them.

Cons: No cons so far!

Other Thoughts: These drives have been working almost all day, every single day for over a year. My DVR writes to them every single night, and users stream from it all day and into the night. I would argue they have seen heavy usage.

4 out of 5 eggsLittle experience with drive

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Did what I wanted at an affordable price
Seagate has a free downloadable stunted version of Acronis True Drive to surmount most installation issues (better than the older and less capable Western Digital version).

Cons: I did have to dink around with this drive to get the partitions near what I wanted
drive is a lil noisier than I'm accustomed

Other Thoughts: While I'm an experienced computer builder, it's been a few years since my last build. I struggled with the 2tb partition limit until I found an Acronis solution. I didn't end up with the partitions exactly as I wanted, but close enough. I can't give this drive a full 5 eggs because I haven't owned it long enough. At least I didn't have an infant mortality on my hands. As an aside, the drive it replaced was a 2tb WD Green drive in my NAS that was 6 years old that was starting to get noisy.

3 out of 5 eggsHard drive died after 2 years

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: - good size
- does not overheat

Cons: - computer was very slow, when I configured two of those in RAID 1
- hard drive died after 2 years

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGood HDD

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: They work well with my Qnap nas

Cons: No real cons. Ordered 3. One DOA basically. Had bad sectors Had to RMA

Other Thoughts: Newegg service and shipping and customer service is great. What they aren't great at is the RMA process. My HDD is taking far too long to get here. Just send the new one when you request the return. If you don't get the old one then charge for another. Something other than what you've got going now. Server running degraded mode for a long time just waiting. Return/exchange sevice should be much faster.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat performance per dollar

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Picked up two on a recent newegg sale ($119 each) to add to my FreeNAS system. No problems setting them up.
These drives work well with FreeNAS.
Packaging used for shipping was robust and durable.

Cons: There are faster (7200RPM) drives out there - but for the price, you can't beat these.

Other Thoughts: I store weekly backups (images) of all my computers in two places (FreeNAS server and main system) so if a storage drive on either my system or the server dies, there is a separate backup available. Never keep your data "eggs" in one basket.

NAS drive are different that standard desktop drives. The internal components are designed for 24/7 operation. Check the manufacture's website for more info.

5 out of 5 eggsLarge Hard Drive. Cheap. Fast.

This review is from: Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 4TB NAS hard drive. Fast for a 5900 rpm drive. Silent. Seems to work so far. Only time will tell. 3 year warranty. Came packaged well.

Cons: No cons so far. Check out other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I placed the hard drive in a USB 3.0 external enclosure and initially had trouble formating it. I had the enclosure hooked to a cheap USB 3 hub that worked fine with this enclosure and an old Seagate 500 GB hard drive. i then hooked it directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. It formated fine. I then tried hooking it back to the hub and copying some data. It was a no go. Hooked it directly to the USB 3 port on the computer and got copy speeds of around 90MB/s ... this was from a 5400rpm laptop hard drive. So I am pretty sure the cheap usb 3 hub can't handle something. Doesn't seem to be the enclosure since I ran it directly to the computers USB 3 port and it worked fine. Also hooked it to a USB 2 hub and it worked but the transfer speed was only around 37MB/s. Hope this helps someone.
