It was brand new, if I remember correctly. (If it wasn't, then it was a really good refurbish. I use mine for storing scientific data and it has worked perfectly.)

Does this work with Apple MacBook w/o problems?

It does work fine with my macbook air on both OS Lion and Yosemite.  However, you have to reformat the drive to a exFAT or apple specific format first.  Which means you lose the auto backup software that comes with it.  I didn't mind because it was crap and timecapsule works better anyway

This is a spinning hard drive, not flash. It is a 2.5" Seagate HDD in an aluminum case case with a USB controller.

Yes, it has a faster transfer rate on on a USB 3.0 but it will work on a 2.0

I can think of no reason that it would not be.  It works with my Mac, Linux, and Windows 64-bit machines.  It is blazing fast if connected to a USB 3 port.

Can store full length movies on this storage device?

Yes and no. It's dependent on the file size (2 gig limit on older OS's) and how the drives are formatted under which OS that is used to set-up.
So no videos on windows 95 if the file size is over 256 megs or under 2 GB depending on the BIOS (PC), OS patch and HDD format.
Window 3.1, you are in for an even bigger headache.
I could never get the boot loader to work on 3.1.
