1 out of 5 eggsFantom USB External Drives

Pros: It was cheap comparatively.

Cons: Run, don't walk away. Be afraid, very afraid to order Fantom. After 4 failed drives on several PCs in the house, clearly these are fragile at best.

1 out of 5 eggsDied within a week of purchase

Pros: Runs cool.

Cons: HUGE blue light on the front was enough to distract me while copying files.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these drives over a year. One died within 8 months and the other died a week after purchase. Would definitely not recommend this product.

Manufacturer Response:

We regret the inconvenience. It is always a disappointment when a drive fails.

It appears that the drives may be under warranty. If you haven't already done so, please fill out the return authorization form on our site so we may service your drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGood, Cheap memory

Pros: Can't beat the price. Quiet. Reasonable quick on USB 2.0.

Cons: I feel ya on the led(two reviews back). SATA would have been faster but I didn't have external SATA at the time.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat external

Pros: Hasn't given me any problems. It's silent and doesn't get hot. It has a great price for 500 gigs. It sets itself up almost instantly on all my computers. I myself probably won't fill it up any time soon.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Newegg is great.

1 out of 5 eggsMy drive failed too. Doh!

Pros: Quiet, fast access, like the vertical design. My old 80GB Fantom drive was very reliable.

Cons: Drive was purchased November 2007, and failed on July 2008. Drive makes a whirring sound, and is no longer readable by my computer. It's too bad to lose all the data on the drive. I'm sending it back to the manufacturer for repair.

Other Thoughts: Next time I'm buying an external drive with a fan.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Job Newegg!

Pros: Excellent 'chat' feature with friendly and knowledgeable
customer service rep., 3-day delivery of external hard drive. Newegg is simple to deal with and is highly
reccommended by all of the reviews.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I love this Fantom Hard drive. Simple instructions and the drive works quiet and perfect. The blue light is no brighter than the light bar on my squad. Whiners.
Thank you Fantom and Newegg - I'll be back forever.

1 out of 5 eggsJust died on me...

Pros: cheap and didn't have a horror story until now...

Cons: It's 6am (east coast) and I've been up all night trying to save it but there's no hope. It died in just a few months of use and I'm incredibly disappointed with the quality of this product. It simply wouldn't copy a file, the file seemed corrupted because it stopped in the middle of the copying procedure...okay that happens I guess just delete it and move on...nope turns out the drive would not allow me to delete that and would not check for errors at all...now I'm left with a red light constantly and windows will not recognize it as a hard drive...

Other Thoughts: I'm still pretty upset that a drive one could be relying on as a backup for data or storing lots of data, could be so unmistakably unreliable.

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry to hear of your experience. It is always a disappointment when a drive fails. If you haven't already done so, please fill out the return authorization form on our website so we may service your drive.

5 out of 5 eggsno problems so far

Pros: No problems whatsoever regarding packaging, arrival and it worked perfectly right away.

Cons: None se far. I've read several reviews complaining about their HD dying after a year of usage. Luckily that's not happening yet (It's been 13 months since purchase), but I'm already thinking about getting another one. If my current drive does die, I'll edit this review.

Other Thoughts: I would get another one of this; although that year-after-failure stops me from doing so right away.

3 out of 5 eggs1 out of 2 crashed

Pros: Lots of storage, good price

Cons: First of all, the brightness on the LED's is absurd and there is no way to turn them down. Beyond that, I bought two of these in the fall to house movie backups for my HTPC. One died this weekend. They are still under warranty so I can get it replaced, but re-ripping the movies is going to be a pain. I really need to switch to RAID

Other Thoughts: Hopefully someday we will get a storage medium that doesn't have a 50% fail rate.
