1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable power adapters

Pros: There's a spacious hard drive on the inside.
USB 2 + FireWire

Cons: The power adapter needs to be replaced about 2-3 times a year – I am not exaggerating. Also, in my opinion, they aren't so attractive.

Other Thoughts: I had bought 3 of these drives for use as a backup solution of server files at my parents' office. The drives are used in rotation in case of HDD failure. With just the one backup location, the original 3 power adapters have all failed with time, and 2 replacement power adapters have failed as well. The replacement power adapters are not cheap at all. Too bad my parents have not listened to my recommendation to buy new enclosures and let me do the work for free! Stubborn folks...

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your feedback. The power supplies are covered under a one year warranty. If you have had problems with several please contact us and we will make sure you get taken care of. Please call 1(800)800-DISK (3475) select option #2 for Technical Support or email us at support@micronet.com

2 out of 5 eggsHard drive works great - power supply doesn't

Pros: The hard drives have worked perfectly and have performed very well...

Cons: ...The power supply that comes with each unit doesn't. I've ordered a total of four of these drives and thus far three power supplies have died (most recent within the last couple of days). Since my needs require at least two to be on at all times, I can only hope I can find a replacement at Radio Shack or something.

Other Thoughts: Won't be buying this brand ever again simply because they ship with faulty power supplies.

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry to hear you're having trouble with your unit. Your unit is covered by a 1 year warranty. Please contact us at 1(800)800-DISK(3475) select option #2 for Technical Support or email us at support@micronet.com and we will see about replacing your power supplies.

1 out of 5 eggsLemon

Pros: Rugged "external" construction

Cons: After about 18-20 months, my drive died for no apparent reason. I turned it on yesterday and Windows wouldn't recognize it. It was making a high-pitched hum and an intermittent click. The drive did not see excessive use. I just backed up data on it every couple of months.

Manufacturer Response:

We regret the inconvenience. If you need assistance please call 1(800)800-DISK(3475) select option #2 for Technical Support or email us at support@micronet.com

5 out of 5 eggsHardy Beast

Pros: Fast, solid HDD. That pretty much sums it up. I've never had a problem with this drive in the 2 years-ish I've owned it. I have accidentally knocked it off a desk, fell about 4 feet, still works perfectly (and no data was corrupted). I don't recommend doing that ever xD, but it's a tough drive.

I have had this a long time, and figured I'd come give it justice.

Cons: I turn mine off at night because of the blue light on the front. Honestly, it is as bright as my computer... and my comp has a see-through side panel.

Other Thoughts: I know, at this point, you can buy the 1TB version of this drive for exactly the same cost... so i'm not sure what Newegg is up to on that front. double the storage, 0 price increase. Good drive though.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Quality Drive

Pros: Owned this drive for 1 year and 6 months, have had no problems thus far. Fan-less design means very quiet. Used this external drive for backing up a MacBook and holding misc. files, partitioned in half. Used to reboot my Mac from Time machine successfully on two separate occasions.

Cons: Better Bargain Drives can be found.
No fan=hot drive.

Other Thoughts: Although this hard drive gets quite hot, I was never ignorant enough to leave it on all the time. Only turning it on for backups, and to find files, then turning it off again before leaving the house/dorm/going to sleep would extend the life a good deal more. It's worked for me.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Quiet, good amount of space

Cons: crashing issues after 2 years with 2 different models

Other Thoughts: second drive i've bought from this company that has crashed after 2 years. the other was the 1TB. I hope the 1.5TB one i have doesn't crash before i get a different one to backup the data on it.

5 out of 5 eggstwo years going strong (knock on wood)

Pros: Connects fast via USB, files come down and go up quickly. It's stylish and quiet, exactly what I paid for and more.

Cons: Really can't think of any.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this drives during a sale two years ago, I've brought it many places, wiped it, filled it up, wiped it again, I've had certain files sitting on it for over a year and still running great and perfectly. Like everyone else I was skeptical because of the name and price but it really is a quality drive. Never a corrupted file, when I upgrade to Terabytes I will be buying Fantom again.

5 out of 5 eggsGetting an unfair rap !

Pros: I have owned a similar Fantom Drive model since 2006, it has been threw pure hell and continues to operate flawlessly ! It has been dropped, had coffee spilled on it, kicked, hung by the wires, beaten by children and pee'd on by our dog, still works fine. It runs cool and quiet. I would recommend Fantom Drives to anyone. Super value for the $.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: As I have said, I would recommend FD products to anyone interested in buying an "ULTRA DURABLE" and cost effective external storage solution. They run cool and very quiet with no headaches at all. Great external drive.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great Price for the size, runs quietly

Cons: Blue light is very bright in the dark

Other Thoughts: I owned this drive for maybe two years. It worked perfectly for the entire length of its term. I'm not sure how long an external is expected to last however. Just recently, the power cord for the drive has stopped working. I've contacted tech support to see if I can get another.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: * Great seek time
* Goes to sleep when not in use
* Slim and durable
* Works great on a Mac
* Fairly silent
* Inexpensive

Cons: * Doesn't always wake from sleep when connected to a network
* Bright blue light distracting when always on

Other Thoughts: I have had this drive for a couple of years for use with Time Machine when I bought my MacBook Pro. The drive was recognized instantly when plugged in either USB or Firewire ports. I have now hooked it up to my Airport Extreme and it works just as well, although it does have a tendency to sleep intermittently and doesn't wake without powering it off. Overall, if you are looking for a cost-effective drive, this is a great choice!
