3 out of 5 eggsCould Have Done Better

Pros: Runs very quiet. Has worked on every computer and every setup I've tried it on. I had no problems with the USB 2.0 speed.

Cons: The blue light is way to bright. The drive stopped working about 7 months after I bought it. A red light appeared. I'm in the process of filing a RMA but that's annoying.

Other Thoughts: For the price I paid I wish I would have gotten a NAS system instead.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's a hard drive

Pros: 1) Hasn't crashed yet
2) very quiet

Cons: Not a huge con, but... C'mon! preformat as FAT32????

Other Thoughts: It's seems like a good drive (so far). The LED indicator is so bright it's burning a hole in my retina, but nothing some tape won't fix. Doesn't seem quite as fast as the SATAII drive it replaced, but certainly fast enough to dish HD quality video on my HTPC. Plus it's "portable" (but you have to also bring the power transformer too).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, Rebate difficult

Pros: Drive is fast, and very quiet. Amazing deal. My older external HDD is really noisy and this is a huge improvement over that. I love this drive!

Cons: Comes formatted in FAT32. Not a big deal, since you can do a quick format to NTFS in a couple of minutes.

The website does not have the rebate available for this drive. The only available option is for 1TB drives purchased from 07/01 to 07/31. Seems like either the rebate is fake or messed up.

5 out of 5 eggsso far...sweet

Pros: Very nice unit...I opened box, and was surprised at how small this device is. Approx same size as an internal CD burner. Plugged power cord and USB cable into device and started using it immediately. Sooo much memory, felt like a new world as it is my 1st external device. As I have 2 desktop computers, I'm thinking this will be very handy.

Cons: Blue light is quite bright, but who really cares? I have a boatload of storage space now!

2 out of 5 eggsGetting the Rebate is a Pain

Pros: Had to reformat and verify the entire drive after it first arrived
because of errors. So far, it is holding up (1 month+) and is

Cons: Rebate procedure is slow and painful. The web site offers to "speed it up"
by charging an additional fee (which I find annoying).

Also, rebates are denied for trivial reasons (i.e. including the Newegg packing
list instead of printing out a copy of the online invoice [which has more or
less the same information]).

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your feedback. We are proud of our customer loyalty programs and gladly pay each and every rebate claimant that qualifies for one of our promotions. Your difficulties are probably the result of a simple misunderstanding. For example, a typo in your mailing address can prevent you from receiving payment or alerts on your rebate status. If you would contact us at we would be more than happy to look into your rebate claim for you.

2 out of 5 eggsDead After 24 Hours

Pros: Great Value

Cons: I read the bad reviews and discounted them. My drive arrived I reformatted to NTFS and it ran great for 24 hours. Died after 24 Hours and can't be revived. Even tried the old Freezer trick to get data off the drive.

5 out of 5 eggsWell worth it

Pros: This unit has run smoothly ever since I got it and lugged it in. It automatically found drivers, installed itself and after a quick format hasn't been stopped using since. For the price, you definitely get more then what you pay for. It comes with a very hard metal case and keeps pretty cool. The only time I had it warm was when I did an excess of 4 transfers non-stop for about 10 hours and it was still cooler then my other externals.

Cons: I dont really use the stand that comes with it. Laying it flat works just fine. LED is bright blue as always. VERY bright.

Other Thoughts: Best bank for your buck, and I think you get a LOT of quality with it. I wont flinch for a second on buying this same one again as son as I need more space (which wont be fore a while after this).

4 out of 5 eggsInitial problems, working fine afterwards

Pros: Nice, quiet, reliable external hard drive. I use it as a backup and it worked very well except for the beginning, as decribed below.

Cons: I had problems installing this hard drive. If I turned it on while the computer wasalready started, it worked just fine. However, if the had drive was on and I was trying to turn on the computer, it would freeze during booting. After spending time talking to Fantom customer service and Asus customer service (my motherboard is Asus), the suggestion from both was to return the product. However, I spent some time reading various forums and I found an option to disable the UBS Legacy option in BIOS. I did that and since then I have abslutely no problem. Obviously, I did not return the product anymore.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small in size. Computer recognized it right at start up. Almost completely silent!! Great price!

Cons: Blue light on front VERY bright, but not a big deal at all. Short USB cable came with it, but also not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: Would have been cool if it was black instead of silver.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Back-Up Drive

Pros: Excellent drive! Quiet, with a little noise when accessing. I use this as my Time Machine Back-Up drive for my iMac works great. No heat problems.

Cons: Blue activity light is a little too bright, but that's a very minor annoyance. Let put it this way--you dont need a night light in the computer room!
