Great Cheap Backup with eSATA
- Pros: Cheap drive with a great case and interface. Stores a ton of backup data and does it rather quickly. Overall speed with eSATA is compairable to moving data from my C to my D drive and I really can't tell that the hdd isn't actually in the computer. The USB interface is quick as well, but MUCH slower than eSATA. The case has a fan that runs "fairly" quiet. You can hear it, but it's really not that bad. My old Buffalo LinkStation has a fan that would wake the dead, so I'm happy to have something quieter. The drive also goes to sleep if you don't access it, which is something that I was wondering about but isn't mentioned in any paperwork. I think that is the right thing to do with a backup drive since there is no reason to always have it spining.
- Cons: The blue LED on the front of the drive that tell you when it's being accessed and that it's on is VERY bright. Too Bright if you were to install this in a bed room. It's actually bright enough that I can now walk to my office desk without turning on the lights.
Also, that stand that comes with the drive is VERY cheap and is really just a piece of bent metal. Since there is no friction from the drive or the stand, it just slides all around if you touch it. I just put a strip of double-sided tape in it and it works fine.
- Other Thoughts: I gave this item 5 eggs because the only complaints I have had nothing to do with the purpose of the drive. It backs up data and keeps it safe - pretty simple really.
The include software, "Shadow Drive" is really worthless. It crashes all the time and it also installs some kind of program called "Ninja" something. The ninja program is some kind of security function but you have to install it to use Shadow. I had to go to management to disable it from starting up since it uses like 200 megs of ram to just sit idle. USE A DIFFERENT BACKUP PROGRAM THAN THE ONE SUPPLIED!!!!! Windows 7 Professional's backup program is what I use now and it works great.
Good DVR Addition
- Pros: Really huge amount of memory compared to internal drive space. Installed on a DirecTV HR-21 DVR with Esata. Can fit as many football games on as the 2 tuners can record.
- Cons: Really, really bright blue light.
- Other Thoughts: Had a bad experience with a previous Fantom drive so I got Newegg's 2 year warranty. Even with that, it was cheaper than alternatives...
DOA - Nuff' Said
- Pros: None
- Cons: Unit arrived dead on arrival. We sent it to our data center several states away to perform a restore from a backup we had at our dc. Our techs tried to get it to recognize on our four servers via USB, and it would not work. They also mentioned that the drive had some really odd rotational properties (such as if they put it on a turntable, it would probably rotate the turntable on its own). Very dissapointed and will now buy brand name drive/enclosures from now on. We do not have the luxury of returning the drive and replacing it.
