1 out of 5 eggsNo Phone No for A-Data Support

Pros: Cheap

Cons: I was trying to register the drive on the A-Data website. It does not like the serial number off the drive.
I'm in the process or returning the drive for a replacement after less than 1 year of use.
A-Data has no phone number listed that I can call. I e-mailed them and I'm waiting for a reply. 1 day now and no reply yet.

Other Thoughts: There seems to be no way to update earlier reviews on new egg. does anyone know if that's feasbile?

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 8 months

Pros: Price per GB

Cons: Failed after very little use.

Other Thoughts: Bought it as a gift for a family member who used it to store photos of their kids, about once a month, by transferring the photos from their digital camera to the drive. Drive was not used regularly for any backups or any other heavy duty tasks. It started causing the laptop to freeze and then it failed 8 months later after a dozen uses or so. Will be trying to return it under warranty next.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: It looks better than others in the same price range. Performance is limited by USB 2, so it's all the same.

Cons: The mini USB connector has gottan a little loose on mine. It still works fine though. Not really a con.

Other Thoughts: It does look nicer than others in my opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Hard Drive

Pros: This is a nice, small hard drive in an aluminum case. I've had no problems with it connecting to either my computer or to my media server. The price is great. I don't believe that you can get another 500GB USB powered hard drive for less money.

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsNot for media player

Pros: Size, external built quality, price.

Cons: I have used it in my desktop as standard USB drive with no problem, such as copying files, playing media files etc. However, it doesn't recognized by my media player (Argosy HV676) when I try to hook it up to watch movie on TV (it is OK when I used my other external hard drive with same setup). No software comes with this drive for drive managing, auto backup options.

Other Thoughts: Not work with media player due to no driver?
Other than mentioned above. This drive is a good drive for an extra storage on your laptop or desktop.
I would give it rating at 3 stars instead of 5 stars since it doesn't work of my intention (with media player)

5 out of 5 eggsI'm happy, will buy another soon.

Pros: I must admit, I was skeptical because the first few reviews didn't look very good. But I gave it the benefit of doubt and now that I've had it for a few days I have absolutely no regrets in buying this drive. It looks and feels more expensive than it is, has a solid metal construction, works without drivers, and comes with a cool carrying pouch. As far as speed goes, in Vista Ultimate and Windows 7 Ultimate it reads at about 40 mb/s and writes at about 25 mb/s for large 4.5 GB files. I have other 2.5" drives that perform about the same.

I'm probably going to buy the silver version of this drive soon too.

On a side note, Newegg shipping and handling was great as always.

Cons: The USB cord (Y-Cable) is way too short and it's a shame because it feels like a really good quality cable. To give you an idea of how short, it's as long as my 20" widescren monitor is wide.

Other Thoughts: Unlike some other reviewers, I actually like the USB port on the side of the rounded edge. It's kind of unique...

1 out of 5 eggsUSB connector on right, side edge

Pros: Low cost/GB. Comes with protective case. Newegg's great packing and speedy delivery.

Cons: The cord attaches to the right SIDE [driver's side if this was a car] of the HD and is too short given the connection design. Had I know this--especially the side connection part--I would not have purchased it. The cord fits well in the drive, but is not a tight fit on either my primary or back-up notebooks. The cord lacks flexibility, so I am finding it difficult to figure out which USB to use [3 on each notebook] and where to place it once connected without it being in an inconvenient (on the notebook top itself) or risk-of-disconnection, due to bending at connection, place. I had planned using this during long, international fights, but I won't because of the side connection/cord combination: too likely to get disconnected on a plane drop-down table. I'm saying this after putting my notebook, with this portable HD connected, on a TV table last night. This is not the right HD for me. Even copying a 48GB folder to it was slow (almost 3 hours).

Other Thoughts: The bottom is somewhat magnetic. I had a small, thin pin inadvertently near the HD when I did my TV table test. The pin 'stuck' to the HD when I picked it up. I have never experienced this with any of the other portable HDs I own. It does somewhat concern me.

This drive comes in three colors, black (this), pink, and blue. Read the reviews for all colors before deciding if this is a good choice for you.

1 out of 5 eggsFormats from NTFS to RAW randomly

Pros: - Sufficient capacity for a low price
- Nice, modern, sleek design
- Comes with a dual USB cord for extra power whenever needed (I don't need the 2nd for the most part)
- Small and easy to take with you in the nice case provided

Cons: I have had about 8 or 9 external hard drives in the last 10 years of my life, and this one I know is most likely an anomaly. The hard drive I received keeps formatting itself to RAW format within an hour after I formatted it as NTFS.

It worked perfectly fine for about 2 months, and now it seems the hardware has failed. No magnets are nearby. I format it using DOS. I even "eject" the usb device via the windows software before I unplug it from my PC.

Lastly, customer service. If you go to the adata website, it's awful! All it is is one webpage with a couple pictures and an email address. I emailed them about 2 weeks ago and have received nothing. I emailed them again today from a different email address hoping for a response. I'm afraid I might simply be out the money though. We'll see though.

Manufacturer Response:
