5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, RE: Sector sizes

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: FAST, even at the outer edge of the disk, excellent seek times due to the tiny platters and high RPMs

Cons: availability issues recently

Other Thoughts: To work around the SQL Server sector size issue you could create a .vhd file with 512b sector size, mount it, and put your db files on this mounted 512b 'virtual disk'

Check out the syntax for the 'New-VHD' powershell cmdlet, I think you might need to install Hyper-V to get this tool though, not sure...but I know it works

3 out of 5 eggsSector sizes not compatible

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Nice drive for day to day use, a good alternative to ssd.
although questionably.

Cons: Sector sizes are not compatible with MS SQLServer

Other Thoughts: I had to stick to my 300gb velociraotpr and use this 1Tb as additional storage that I did not need.

5 out of 5 eggsWD Veloci Raptor 1 TB 10K RPM

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Excellent Drive! I have mostly SSD's in all of my computers. I was impressed with the SSD like performance. I copied a huge file, almost a terabyte in as little as 15-20 seconds.

Cons: Non except for the Price jump. I am glad I bought it when I did. I only paid $184 with shipping. That was in the first week of July. What happened???

1 out of 5 eggsStay away from 3rd party sellers

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Didn't last long enough to see any, but does make a nice paperweight.

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: First time I have bought from a 3rd party on Newegg, will not do that again, didn't get stared on buiid for 3 weeks, then it was to late to RMA, Newegg no help because its a 3rd party seller. Oh well there's always WD warranty. Nope, they tell me its an OEM drive and not under their warranty, it was not listed as an OEM when I bought it from the 3rd party seller.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome HDD

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This drive seems to be very fast for a harddrive. Obviously its not going to be as fast as SSDs but it is definitely faster than any harddrive I have ever used. When I open up a folder I have full of high resolution desktop backgrounds (1080p+) ...the thumbnails for the files all load INSTANTLY whereas on my 1TB Seagate drive i had before this Velociraptor, it would pause and load them line by line. Not exactly a good way of measuring the speed of a harddrive but i liked what I saw! haha

As always, Western Digital's VelociRaptor drives look very aggressive with the Icepack heatsink system. The heatsink system seems to keep the harddrives running cool (I have a 140mm fan blowing over three Velociraptors and a SSD) ...My Seagate drive ran at least 6 degrees Celcius hotter in the same spot.

I've been using Seagate drives since 2001 and never had one crash until about a week ago in my main Desktop ...Windows reported that my 1TB drive was failing and sure enough it did. Got this Velociraptor to replace it and was able to save everything ...hundreds of gigs transfered pretty quick too. After having trouble with that Seagate drive (sent it off to be repaired a year after I bought it in 2010...) I think I have officially jumped ship to Western Digital. I bought used WD Black harddrives and two 300gb VelociRaptor drives from my cousin and was really impressed with them.

Also. I am really glad WD has a 5 year warranty on this drive.

Cons: Its expensive. Really expensive for a HDD.
I don't think I'll spend this much money on a harddrive again ...then again I will probably change my mind if there is a sale going on at Newegg AND if I need/want a new harddrive.

I can't think of anything bad to say except the price. haha

Other Thoughts: Bought this to replace a failing 1TB Seagate Barracuda (that was repaired about 2 years ago).

I use this VelociRaptor primarily for storing documents and for programs I don't use every day. I have a 60gb Crucial C300 to boot Windows 8.1, this 1TB Velociraptor for storing documents and programs i dont use everyday ...then I have two 300gb Velociraptors in RAID0 for steam games.

I must say I don't think the velociraptors are that loud ...they have a different sound to them compared to other drives I've used in the past but thats it. I even have three VelociRaptor drives in my computer and don't notice them most of the time.

3 out of 5 eggsSo far, ok, with one caveat

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It's faster than a 7,200 rpm drive, and this is where all my Steam games are installed as my boot SSD isn't big enough for ALL the games.

Also good for pulling a ton of photos together in Adobe Lightroom and generally quicker in folder view, compared to my previous 1tb WD 7,200 drive.

Cons: Biggest caveat I have for this drive is now long-term health. I've discovered a bad sector (a single one) in the drive that refuses to go away. I've read all the "one bad sector and it's only downhill from there" comments. Not a single one of my other internal drives have a single bad sector (some are probably four or five years old!).

This will be in the forefront of my thoughts if the bad sectors start to grow. The WD rep did say I could start the warranty process if I wanted, but he suggested waiting a little bit longer.

5 out of 5 eggsWow another rock solid Vraptor

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Longtime Vraptor believer...
for daily processing it cannot be beat.
Speed in some isolated situations exceeded ssd.
If you are a speed only junkie go to a quality ssd.
But if you are interested in a rock solid comfort....
and hammer data all day long...
I sleep better at night with my Velociraptors

Cons: I own multiple vraps at 150, 250. 300 and now 1Tb.
price per megabyte is still high.

Other Thoughts: greens and blues for bulk stores.
VFraptor for processing and you cant go wrong,
unless you forget to get an UPS... LOL....
