5 out of 5 eggsGood for storage

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I built a RAIDZ2 on four drives. After a week I turned off the fan in front of drives, these drives run so cool there was no need for it. Without fan they stay below 40 °C. Write performance is more than satisfactory for a storage, when copying files over gigabit ethernet network there is no I/O bottleneck.

Cons: One of four drives was DOA, had to RMA it.

Other Thoughts: All drives have over 4000 hours on them now and smartctl reports no problems whatsoever. In my experience if a drive does not die first week and shows no errors it is going to last.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: finally a 2 good drive after previous batch were 2 out of 2 DOA.

Cons: 50/50 chance getting drives DOA..... make sure you do extended test with their utility before putting it into service. Last batch I order failed DOA right out of the box.

Other Thoughts: Maybe I should try the other brand.......next time around...

5 out of 5 eggsDrobo Replacement Drive

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: WD Red drive, made for use in arrays.

Cons: Premium Price

Other Thoughts: For the record: consumer HDDs will retry nearly endlessly if they don't get a good read of a sector. When this happens in an array, the controller will think the drive has failed, and go into recovery mode, so it can write all the data to the disk (again) to bring it back into the array. this can affect performance, and if it happens to another disk, while it's still rebuilding, the whole array could be lost.

Red drives are programmed to stop retrying after a fairy short period of time, and report a single sector error. That prevents the array from dropping the drive.

Backstory:

I've got a first generation Drobo. I moved it from my room to my basement computer lab, and when it restarted one of the drives showed up as bad, briefly, and then the Drobo went into rebuilding mode, scrubbing the original drive back into the array. About a week later, we had an extended power outage. The Drobo was in standby at the time, so I just disconnected it's power from the battery Back-up. Upon restoration of power the same thing happened, with the same 2TB drive. I decided to get the 2TB Red, because I'm a lot tighter on cash than I was when I built the array, (otherwise I may have gotten a larger drive than the original.)

As of right now, the drive is in the Drobo, and the Drobo reports that it is healthy.

2 out of 5 eggsFollow up, re failure rate

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: The two still running are solid drives serving as VM iSCSI data stores in a 2 bay Netgear NAS.

Cons: Had one fail last week, did advanced RMA through WD, the replacement drive was DOA. So 2 out of 5 drives good, 3 out of 5 bad - 2 out of 5 stars seems a more than fair rating.

Other Thoughts: The 2TB reds are the only series of drives I have ever had multiple issues with. Occasional drive failures are just part of life that's why you take backups. 3 of 5 bad in a low activity home environment is either really bad luck or an indicator of a bad batch or bad series. But definitely worth noting here

2 out of 5 eggsNot Compatible w/DX4000 Sentinel

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Probably Good Drives w/compatible products.

Cons: We thought these would be compatible with a WD DX4000 Sentinel NAS But they're NOT! Even though labeled WD NAS drives and not being able to find a ompatibiltiy chart until after the fact. Now I'll have to pay the shipping and restocking fees to Newegg for a product that WD should have more information on compatibility and should be compatible to begin with. Good Luck finding documentation and good luck finding new drives for upgrading.

5 out of 5 eggsI love these drives

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I've been using them in different NAS setups for over a year and never had a hiccup. No DOA's and they always run fast and cool. I just put 3 in a server and it's working out great.

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital Red NAS HD WD20EFRX 2TB

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: So far so good, if they were to DOA they would have done so already. The drives are quite and stay cool with my ICE DOCK Black Vortex multiple bay drives. The drives are fast with 64mb cache. Running these drives for my unRaid system. 6x WD red drive is all.

Cons: none so far.

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: - Quiet operation
- Fairly cool
- It's a trooper (like most all WD drives I've owned/used)
- 3 year warranty

Cons: - Failing after 2.5 years

Other Thoughts: Bought the drive on 11/2012. Used it in a small home media server for storing bulk video. Booted up the machine yesterday to find the drive was no longer accessible from Windows. Ran wddiag which erred out with a 0225 indicating too many bad/unreadable sectors.

Figuring whatever was on it was lost I tossed it into a Linux box I have that I've used to pull previous WD drives back from the brink long enough to recover data and sure enough, it saw everything on the drive and is pulling stuff off as I type this.

While I have seen WD drives fail through the years, I've still yet to see one that wasn't at least partially recoverable if you have the tools. Even drives that sound like they're spinning themselves apart inside. Yet to see that kind of ability from any other drive manufacturer.
