Western Digital VelociRaptor 600GB SATA 6GB 10000rpm 2.5in. Internal Hard Drive

WD VelociRaptor hard drive delivers maximum speed and reliability for performance enthusiast systems, workstations, and low-end servers. With a superbly engineered combination of 10,000RPM spin speed, SATA 6Gbps interface and a 32MB cache, this drive is truly an evolution in performance.

Designed around a 10,000RPM spin speed, these SATA 6Gbps drives include a 64MB cache and deliver the ultimate performance for photo and video editing.

High Capacity

State-of-the-art technology delivers a balance of high performance and high capacity perfect for data-intensive workloads that require large amounts of storage such as video editing, 3D rendering and scientific modeling.

Ultra-Cool Operation

Consumes less idle power and uses similar active power as the previous generation WD VelociRaptor, while offering higher capacity and performance.

Advanced Format (AF)

Technology adopted by WD and other drive manufacturers as one of multiple ways to continue growing hard drive capacities. AF is a more efficient media format that enables increased areal densities.

Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF).

Optimizes operation and performance when the drives are used in vibration-prone, multi-drive chassis.

NoTouch Ramp Load Technology

The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.

Pre-Emptive Wear Leveling (PWL)

Ensures reliability for applications that perform a high incidence of read/write operations at the same physical location on the disk.

Environmentally Conscious

In addition to being RoHS compliant, this generation of WD VelociRaptor also provides a halogen-free design.

Ideal for:

High-performance computing, 3D rendering, digital content creation and editing, scientific computing and image management.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty fast but also pretty loud

Pros: Fast to load up games

Cons: Sounds like an old fashioned hard drive with the "Kr"ing when it does anything.

Other Thoughts: This hard drive is gonna be louder than anything in your desktop when your fans aren't going loud.

5 out of 5 eggsRAID 0

Pros: Fast, cheap. Ran two in RAID 0 and got 250 write and 275 read speeds. Ran three in RAID 0 and got 375 write and over 400 read. Running six in RAID 0 gave me 600 read and 500 write. For the $50 price tag on black Friday these are a great deal. Had four of the previous generation raptors (150 GB models) in a RAID 0 for 5 years without a hitch. Only reason I upgraded was I only had 600 GB of space now I have 6 times that amount and almost twice the speed. Before that setup I had two of the 74GB models in a RAID 0 setup. These drives love RAID. I'm using an older ICH10R onboard RAID controller from my MB.

Cons: They are a bit loud but honestly if you have a case with a good number of fans it's not a problem. FWIW I am using an antec 900 case.

5 out of 5 eggsWD VelociRaptor

Pros: This drive is a speed demon. Transfer, Access, Read, and Write rates are by far superior to my other 7200 rpm drives. Used HT Tune 5.0 to test the speeds. Also arrived with Zero errors or issues with drive. Rock solid performance so far. Does not miss a beat. System boots in seconds, literally seconds.

Cons: Ive owned a ton of hard drives over the years and this one is by far the loudest thing I have ever heard. It grinds and vibrates and makes a excessive amount of noise. Maybe its just mine? It does run a little hotter than the other drives, I can understand why they came with heatsinks. Sits at about 26 degress, the other 3 hard drives sit at 21 degrees with exceptional cooling provided. Despite noise still cant knock the egg.

Other Thoughts: I would purchase again if the price was right. Picked this up for 52$ so cant complain for the performance. Apart from the loud factor behind it its still a solid purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsWD Velociraptors 600GB 6.0Gb/s

Pros: These are very good drives and I have achieved over 1TB in RAID0 array to match my original goal. Excellent performing drives for hdd @ 10,000 rpm.

Cons: 2.5" was not immediately compatible with my case but was soon resolved with a 3.5-2.5 converter bracket.

Other Thoughts: As far as hdd's go, these high speed HDD's are top tier performers and high quality. I've experienced great reliability with past drives as well.

4 out of 5 eggsnot 6Gbps

Pros: Cheap, good quality, 10krpm seek times

Cons: These are only 3Gbps interface.

Other Thoughts: Ordered a LOT of these and they all report 3Gbps rather than 6Gbps on 3ware and LSI raid controllers. In fact I was unable to find a controller where they reported 6Gbps. Part of the referb process must limit the interface speed on these to 3Gbps.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little drive.

Pros: This drive has a clear advantage over 7200rpm in access times, with the benchmarking I did, I got half the access times that a 7200rpm gets. As for Read and Writes, it was around 150mb/s with a burst of 170.

This drive didnt come with its heatsink but its actually not needed if you are not running a 100% duty cycle. If you are, I highly recommend getting a heatsink because this sucker will get hot. For normal use, its not needed if you have airflow.

Cons: Fairly loud drive, clicks often, but other than that, no issues at this time. Will be updating as time goes on.

Other Thoughts: I put a old heat sink spreader from a way old GPU on the drive, just slapped it on there, it helps a little from the heat, but Like I said, not needed if you are below 80% duty cycle with proper airflow.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Spacious

Pros: $65
Velociraptor Hard Drive
Western Digital

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Not the speediest HD out there, but very very spacious - which is why I got it, not for speed. It is fast either way, which is a positive. Threw my Steam Folder with all my apps on it and still have alot of space to work with. Very cheap for 600GB, although it was a refurb. I win.
