5 out of 5 eggsI'm Satisfied

This review is from: Matsunichi 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive DM256-BK-1TB Black

Pros: Seemingly well built. Quiet. No problems so far. Decent price for 1TB. USB powered uses only one USB port.

Cons: USB 3.0 cord is short. Only about 8 inches.
But, maybe this will keep you from snagging the cord while you're using it?

Other Thoughts: I use this as a backup drive. I use FreeFileSync to make quick incremental 1 to 1 backups.

4 out of 5 eggsMatsunichi 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive DM256-BK-1TB Black

This review is from: Matsunichi 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive DM256-BK-1TB Black

Pros: Highly portable in that it draws power from the USB port rather than one of those "wall warts" standard external drives require (have a few).

Cons: Other than that the first one I received could not be recognized and had to go through the whole RMA process (and PAY FOR RETURNING DEFECTIVE GOODS!!! - lost an egg for that).

Other Thoughts: Some (many?) in the comments have said the cord is too short. For laptop use that is usually a good thing to keep clutter to a minimum (remember you won't have an external power supply to deal with). I found a USB extension cable works with the included cable, so "shortness" shouldn't be too much of a problem.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Matsunichi 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive DM256-BK-1TB Black

Pros: Small, compact.

Edges are smooth and rounded.

Case is glossy, cleans easily.

Transfer speeds for me started at nearly 100 MB/s, then went down to a constant 70 MB/s after about.

No additional power plug required, gets power off of USB connection.

Works out of the box, with no additional firmware/software required to get running.

Comes packaged in foam protective packaging, that can be reused (it's flat and in the shape of the HD + cable).

Cons: Does not work with Wii USB loaders for backup wbfs files.

Bright blue LED near USB 3.0 connector that flashes during activity.

Other Thoughts: Cable:
-The length of the cable is 9 inchs (23cm) long, from endpoint to endpoint of metal.
-It is a USB 3.0 connection at the computer end, and a USB 3.0 micro-B connection on the Hard Drive end.
-Cable is blue in colour (for both Black and Blue colours of the HD).

The USB 3.0 micro-B connection on HD will accept older 2.0 and 1.1 micro-B cables (but not mini-B).

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Matsunichi 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive DM256-BK-1TB Black

Pros: Decent price for a 1 TB hard drive. It hasn't given me any problems so far. (Owned for 3 weeks)

Cons: Like many people have mentioned already, the cord is a bit short (around 4-5 inches)but still manageable.

Other Thoughts: I used to own a 500 GB portable hard drive that is the size of a modem and requires an external outlet to use. Looking at this petite 1TB hard drive that only requires a USB cable amazes me. Pray Moorse's Law.

4 out of 5 eggsNice drive for the price

This review is from: Matsunichi 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive DM256-BK-1TB Black

Pros: Got this to make a small Mythtv BackEnd (BE) server (DYI DVR) using a older laptop and wanted some extra space for recording video . I got the 1TB drive on sale for under 50 bucks so the price per mb was the lowest around. I don't have USB3 so I wasn't able to test, but it is suppose to support it. The case is nice and is a change from the boring black cases other portable drives come in. While I didn't open it, hdparm (via linux) shows the following info: Model Number: TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100 so it's your general 2.5" laptop drive.

I would assume that's the drive that would come in all of them, but I'm sure YMMV. While some list the cable is a con, for me the short cable is just what I need as I don't want cables cluttering up the location I have my MythTV BE running...this cable was perfect for my needs.

The drive pulls power from the USB port so it's very low powered which is a plus since my MythTV BE is on 7x24.

Cons: The HD light is in the back of the drive where the cable plugs in, I would have preferred to have it on the front or top.

Other Thoughts: I'll be curious to see how this stands up over the year recording video, my only concern is that the case is not vented, so one has to wonder if at some point heat will get to the drive. But since the drive used is designed to be used in laptops which can get hot, I hoping it will be okay.

1 out of 5 eggsDead @ 31 days

This review is from: Matsunichi 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive DM256-BK-1TB Black

Pros: Fast, small, inexpensive

Cons: SHORT USB3 cable, dead @ 31 days.

Other Thoughts: I just lost everything for the Vacation Bible School we're in the middle of! Don't want to pay ~$60 for a month of use on drives I can't trust to not eat my data.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent travel drive, great for backups too

This review is from: Matsunichi 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive DM256-BK-1TB Black

Pros: Good price, especially on sale.
Compact.
Supposedly uses standard 2.5" SATA HDD (did not confirm myself, just parroting other reviews).
FAST USB 3.0 transfers.

Cons: None so far. I wish these Matsunichis came in a 2TB capacity, I could retire my externally powered travel drive with one of those.

Other Thoughts: Purchased as a manual mirror for a Linux based media server/player box. I needed something quick and easy and USB 3.0 to take advantage of the faster backup speeds. So far this has exceeded my expectations. Thinking about buying more, except I'd like larger capacity than a single terabyte. (I keep a 3.5" external 2TB USB 2.0 HDD in my laptop bag.)
