4 out of 5 eggsBad..Bad - Advertising!

Pros: Works! I was able to installed Win7 Home 64bit on my sister new Ultra small laptop as USB 2.0 speed. Got free shipping from newegg. Shown up at my door steps next day.

Cons: This is not USB 3.0. Bad advertising newegg. I'm taken an egg off cause it was false advertising, however newgg stil rox!

5 out of 5 eggsFine for an inexpensive CD/DVD drive

Pros: Works out of the box with Windows XP, fast and quiet operation, well packaged, and comes with a USB cable and Nero Express 12 software.

Cons: It does make a little noise when seeking, otherwise it's pretty quiet. The included cable is only 23" long, and there's a warning on the box about using alternate cables; so if you get a longer cable, get a good one (the cable type is USB-A to Mini-B).

Other Thoughts: The box no longer says USB 3 (in fact it says NOTHING about the USB version now).

5 out of 5 eggsNice compact optical.

Pros: Nice compact portable reader/writer, and brand name too. Read a few test discs just fine and burned all tests just as well.

Cons: Not USB 3.0 as per the box and description, but I knew this going in. Cord was a little on the short side, could have used another foot or so, but I have plenty of longer compatible cables.

Not sure why it and so many other portable devices have a glossy finish, being portable they get all scuffed up fairly quick and just look awful.

Other Thoughts: The same thing happened during the transition from 1.0 to 2.0, with plenty of 1.0 devices getting a shiny "2.0" on the box. Though that was typically on cheap unbranded items, I was surprised to see it on Samsung.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: Works great.
No issues in the past 4 months since I've owned this.
It reads some scratched disks that my internal DVD Burner won't read.

Cons: No Cons

Other Thoughts: This is not USB3.0. The cable and the connector on the drive are both USB2.0
I was not expecting it to be USB3, so no complaints. USB2 provides all the data and power that a DVD Burner needs. USB3 would be useless 'cause it's not needed at all.

The included cable is just a regular USB cable. I've used other USB cables that work fine. If you're having issues, that's generally 'cause your computing device isn't providing enough power through the USB ports. In that case, I'd recommend you try a different USB port or buy a 2USB to 1USB extension cable, which would draw power from 2 USB ports. They're generally only a dollar or two.

I have had no issues with this and my Desktop and a Netbook that I've used it on.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat,: for an external usb optical drive

Pros: 1) Does what it's suppose to do... read/write cd/dvd
2) Single usb cable for data and power. Does not require an additional usb cable for power
3) Got it for under $24. You can't beat that.
4) Plug and play. No special drivers required. Of course, this is to be expected in 2013 for an optical drive.

Cons: 1) Good grief, it's slow. But you have to temper your expectations, as this is an external drive powered by a single usb cable. Even read is limited to 8x. Don't expect the same read speeds of an internal desktop drive.

Other Thoughts: This is a great device to have since most ultrabooks do not have optical drives built in. Great portable solution for those rare occasions you actually need an optical drive.

3 out of 5 eggsSamsung

Pros: small, lightweight, portable. Works fine.

Cons: Advertised as usb 2.0/3.0 by newegg because it is on the item box. It is not a usb 3.0 interface. It is a usb 2.0 interface. Of course you can plug it into a usb 3.0 port on your pc. It's only going to go so fast no matter what. Very queationable advertising by Samsung!

Other Thoughts: Samsung's support site sucks.

4 out of 5 eggsNot USB 3.0 but that's a small matter

Pros: CDs, DVD-R and DVD+R - all burn fine.
Only one USB port needed for Mac mini, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. (Tested on all three.)
NOT a slot-loader so you'll never get a disc "stuck" inside.
MUCH better deal that Apple's proprietary DVD burner.

Cons: Don't know why NewEgg can't fix the stupid description; it's NOT USB 3.0. I knew that immediately. USB 2.0 can send data faster than the drive can burn it so there's no need for a USB 3.0 burner.

Other Thoughts: Some complained about the shiny surface of the case being a fingerprint magnet. I just left the protective "skin" on and that prevents the fingerprints. Problem solved.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fine but it is not USB 3.0

Pros: Pretty cheap for Samsung name, no power cord needed, quick recognition of disks, reads old/damaged discs well

Cons: USB 2.0, slow, gloss surface is a fingerprint magnet

Other Thoughts: It's USB 2.0 not that it matters at the write speeds I'm getting - 2.5mb average, 5mb is the fastest I've noticed with 8x DVD media - CDs are typically 1.5mb. Haven't bothered to check if that works out to 8x and 24x but it's probably as fast as this media is. Been using it to archive to RAID old data CDs/DVDs and it's been very good at recognizing and reading them, some are 15yrs old and have visible problems. Gloss top surface gets very dirty very quickly. Feels flimsy but then again it is light, small, and cheap so not a shocker.

No power cord to worry about. It gets its power over the included USB cable. Works perfect on Mac mini running OS X Lion ...
