2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: It works, nominally speaking.

Cons: Throughput is noticeably slower than that of the older model gigabit switch; I bought this one to replace that one, because the technology is supposedly newer and better. It's newer.

Other Thoughts: I realize I simply should have gotten a refund or credit or something, but at approximately 20 bucks, it wasn't worth the hassle. So I'll just keep it, because as I said, it works. Nominally. And you never know when another one of these babies might come in handy for someone.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: Mountable
No configuration required
Gigabit capable

Cons: Does not have a separate port to connect it to a router. You must use one of the 8 ports to do so. It would be nice if there were lights showing the link speed.

Other Thoughts: Bought to replace a 10 year old switch from a competitor that decided to only work at 10 Mbit speeds. After installing this switch, Internet speeds are a lot faster.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW !!!!!!!!!

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: This has all my network devices talking fast!
The main thing I noticed is how fas my connection is now between WD My Cloud and my Roku box. This screams now.
PLUS I have extra ports that I've needed so long now.

Cons: No cons that I can find.

Other Thoughts: Great deal @ 20 bucks shipped (Shell Shocker), this was one of my most useful purchases.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks very well

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: - GigE speeds.
- Low cost
- 8 ports
- efficient back plane
- Autosensing.
- CAT5 producing GigE reliably.

Cons: - Not QUITE as fast as high end GigE (but that's highly dependent on your GigE card and you're not paying that much for it).
- Uplink lights should show speed; instead they only show that there is traffic and that you have link (relates to the color of the lights, not a digital representation, i.e., should show 10Mb/s, 100Mb/s, 1000Mb/s links)

Other Thoughts: Pretty good value. And to think just five years ago, something like this would have been North of $500, even unmanaged.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: Cheap gigabit
8 ports
Auto mdix

Cons: na

Other Thoughts: This switch funnels tons of HD tv (Homerun Prime setup), up to three live tv streams and up to 2 HD recording playback, simultaneously, without a hiccup.
The older 100 Mb switch that it replaced would occasionally hiccup with only 2 streams going.

5 out of 5 eggsworks great

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: Gigabit, under $30 works fantastic, tested speeds and this is true 1GB. Small, light, doesn't get hot and doesn't draw much power.

Cons: cannot tell if something is connected at 100 or 1000, well made...but not metal casing.

Other Thoughts: had a 5 port uplink switch and it NEVER had an issue like the Dlinks do. Never had to cycle it or anything, and I only upgraded to this because I needed more ports...love these and will keep buying their products.

3 out of 5 eggsInexpensive, but lacks basic features

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 10/100/1000Mbps Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, Power-Saving

Pros: - The lowest $/port of any GigE switch out there
- Easy setup

Cons: - For all the features claimed, it lacks LED link speed indication: the LED glow the same color regardless of link speed, which bodes poorly for troubleshooting in the future. Most other switches have LEDs that glow green for GigE links and amber/orange for slower links. For this reason, I have no choice but to dock it 2 eggs.

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for. I'll add this to the outer fringes of my network so as to minimize the link speed troubleshooting issue above.
