5 out of 5 eggsGreat managed switch

Pros: What do I really think of this switch? I just bought another 8-port and a 16-port. Yeah, I like it!

The switch IP starts at 192..168.0.1, and the first time I hooked it up things were a little confused with my old DLink router. There are plenty of great features on this switch, including ARP sniffing and various DDOS mitigation options. Of course there is traffic shaping, IGMP snooping, and other features. This switch is really loaded.

Another thing they do is keep their firmware up to date with what they ship. The switch I bought earlier this year has 1.8, and the new switch has 1.9. Another well-known brand I bought was several revs behind for a new product, so this is nice to see.

Cons: Um, other than English as a second language? Nothing.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable switch, good features

Pros: It's been a reliable switch, and I plan to buy a couple more. It has a good web interface, and it's easy to use.

Cons: The only "con" is that the default address is 192.168.0.1, which conflicted with my router. I wasn't expecting that when I initially plugged it in, so that caused some confusion.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Switch, good service.

Pros: -- First off, everything in the box! New Egg standard customer service.

-- Runs Cool. (Big plus there!)

-- Metal Construction, rackmountEnterprise grade hardware, grounding pin + grounded through power supply.

-- Comes with its own built in encryption certificate but will accept yours as well.

-- User administration permits user to change the default admin user and disable/delete the original admin (admin) which is a boon to security.

Fine grained port control, mac control, and a literal plethora of features including VOIP throttling/precedence control.

-- Did I mention this thing looks nice and technical, without the gaudy plastic casings that some home and enterprise hardware now come with? (I'm looking at you, Cisco.)

Cons: -- The encrypted interface is somewhat slow, so if you have to manage this over an untrusted network with lots of script kiddies trying to snag your login password, keep in mind that it will be slow and you have to make sure you use the HTTPS port.

-- The hardware reset feature for the device can be tricky if you lock yourself out. I had to put that out here, since some folks invariably lose their passwords.

-- If you do need the manual, recall that this is translated from Chinese by someone whose command of English is cautious at best. (The device's default timezone is Shenzen, China, so that should be a clue.

--My main gripe with this thing is that I cannot force all of the access controls at once on particularly untrusted / outward facing connections (or haven't figured it out yet.) However, that isn't a big enough con to warrant an egg off. You can choose to restrict a port by MAC, by physical PORT but not by both together. This feature would be very helpful if one had certain ports facing unsecured locations in one's facility and those required restriction to only certain MACs going to only certain ports. As I do not have that issue, I did not remove an egg for this. Those of you who require extreme control may wish to look into just how much control you wish to obtain before purchase.

-- (I did find a different way to do this to prevent the game pcs which may o ccasionally get infected by less than savvy guests, from DDOSing the rest of the network. It requires default restricting from one option screen and "allowing only" from another.)

Other Thoughts: *** Should have bought the 16 port instead. Just discovered I could have used the extra ports for the tech bench and game bench instead of routing each to their own separate switches. Then again I do not need that much fine grained bandwidth and access control inside the game network. Those just need to see each other.

Pros: Managed switch. TP-Link managed switches very reasonably priced. Faithfully comply with standards. Link Aggregation works with Diskstation. Highly recommend

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Second TP-Link managed switch I have purchased. No problems so far.
