5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Decodes/plays almost every audio stream I've thrown at it. DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD, 5.1 FLAC audio streams (provided my PS3 can play it), etc.

-4 HDMI inputs (for my Playstation and Xbox360), TOSLINK/Opticla/SPDIF (for Wii)

-Auto calibration mode

Cons: -As several reviewers have pointed out, the settings menu can only be accessed via component/composite. I knew that going in and am not bothered by it (having only used it like 5 times). Still it would be nice to have it work over HDMI.

-The audio from certain Xbox 360 apps does not play when the console is connected to the receiver. The problem also manifests when I use the PS2 emulation on my PS3. Personally, I think the problem lies with whatever HDCP/DRM/encoding Microsoft and Sony are using. All the other apps that you actually care about and will likely use (like Netflix and A certain Instant Video streaming service who can't be named lest you decide to give them your business instead of Newegg), work fine.

Other Thoughts: -The iOS support over USB is nice; digital audio streaming, no interference, and it charges the device to boot. Plus you can control music playback using the receiver's remote. Having moved away from using Apple products over the past few years, it is one thing I wished also worked with Android (though maybe I'm just missing something?).

4 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: It was cheaper at Newegg at the time. Gained a few extra HDMI ports as my tv only has two of them.

It does work with banana plugs, which is how I have it setup with the Pioneer SP-BS21-LR speakers I have. [Should have spent more $$ on the speakers.]

Cons: You need to have RCA [component video] hooked up in order to view the on-screen setup.. as this unit does not use the HDMI pass through to have it display .. Some of the similar models [82x series or later] allow you to view it without the extra cables.

Recommend using an amp with this receiver, but then again this is only a 140 watt receiver. -I knew that going in.

Other Thoughts: Pioneer could have stepped up with the menu using HDMI instead of RCA / component setup.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Arrived with defect. The sound is very muddy on one speaker. I changed the speaker. The problem still existed. Do not waste time to buy it. Newegg allowed me to return it. But I lost my time. I will by a YAMAHA receivers

3 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Pioneer fixed it for free, they put in $250 board to fix a unit I only paid 150 for. Can't beat that deal

Cons: Was with out it for three weeks

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Low price (you know what that means), looks really good on the shelf.

Cons: Half the features are non-functional after about two weeks but I have kept it . Neither the seller (I tried to mention them by name but they rejected my review) nor Pioneer could be bothered to honor any warranty or return policies for this unit regardless of the thousands of dollars I have spent with them.

Other Thoughts: Spend a little more for a better, different, brand and pay attention to the bad reviews. They are there for a reason.

1 out of 5 eggsDont buy it will die soon after purchase

Pros: When it worked it was fine

Cons: Died, stoped passing HDMI signals after two months.

Other Thoughts: Pretty sure this unit was NOT new. That is not stated anywhere in the listing. Owners manual was writen it in when I got it. Its unlike Newegg to sell open box with out saying so. Hope its still under warentee, the warentee card was not in thge box when I got it.

5 out of 5 eggsWorkhorse unit

Pros: I did a lot of research between brands and on the various models in this Pioneer family before purchasing this one. I should preface my review by saying that a month earlier I had purchased a 5.1 polk surround for a 15x15 entertainment room not realizing that blu-ray codecs would not work on my old reciever. Installation was a breeze with the sound calibration tool, menu is relatively simple, and its has been extremely reliable over the past year. It never overheats or switches off.

Cons: It only does 2 things which I am not sure about. Very rarely the screen on my Toshiba LCD will blank out for 1 second when using the video HDMI pass through on xbox 360 or my sony BD player. Its possible, with all the digital data being sent that the tv refresh rate may be lacking. There is an audio pass through feature which is automatically selected which means only tv sound (xbox only)and havent figured out how to reset with out turning off and on at the initial start up. Not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: If you need all the bells and whistles such as Windows 7 streaming, HDMI upgrades and want to pay an extra 100 bucks then go for it. If you want just solid surround sound and I highly reccomend my Polk 5.1 or higher then this will work for you nicely withough breaking the bank. Im sure my neighbors were wondering what I was doing when I had purchased the Dark Knight box set. In the first scene of the Dark Knight rises where Bane was captured and didnt notice any sound problems until it showed the plane flying over head which basically sounded like someone scratching a chalk board on my old reciever. On the Pioneer, with the surround, the deafening rumbling of the engines moving from the right rear to the front left completely sold me. Voices echo in empty spaces the Wane manor, Have never heard any limitations on any current audio formats and streams fine with Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, etc. Gaming such as Skyrim is on a completely different level as you can hear all the little nuances of being in a 3-d environment. I play Rocksmith 2014 and feel like Im shredding in my own music studio.

2 out of 5 eggsCauses TV to flicker and go black

Pros: Price, Got it on sale for $159.

Cons: HDMI input worked for a few days. Now all inputs are faulty causing a drop in the signal. I have tried connecting the devices directly to the TV and there isn't an issue.
This HDMI hub should have been Pioneers top priority during manufacturing. Essentially it makes this receiver worthless.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Entry level 5.1

Pros: So far, a great unit. I have it set up in my basement family room. Two Pioneer speakers bought in the 70's in Hong Kong (on R&R), two Infinity speakers, and a passive center channel speaker (Infinity). Amazing sound for an entry level amp. I've always had great luck with Pioneer. The old Pioneer amp now runs some equipment in my living room.

Cons: It would be nice to have a printed manual rather than a CD. I printed out the manual from the .pdf on the CD, but it's a little hard to read. If you don't have a basic knowledge of A/V hook up and set up, it can be a little tough.
