4 out of 5 eggsPretty dang good

Pros: I have to say, this product is pretty dang good, regardless of what most of the reviews state here...I took a chance on it based on Maximum PC's review and I'm happy with it. Picture and sound are great even on my old CRT TV with composite cables. It does everything Viewsonic says it will do...almost...

Cons: As another reviewer stated before me, I cannot get this unit to see my network through shared devices no matter what I do...I'm sure there must be something simple I'm missing but I am also a network admin and I can't make it work; however, it does connect to the same network through UPNP so I really don't care. Netflix is limited to only playing things that are in your instant queue...you cannot search for what you want to watch...kind of a bummer but not a deal breaker. It is also a little bit slow overall (even after updating the latest firmware) but not enough to be irritating...especially on a wireless connection with the Zonet wireless USB plug-in.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I'm very happy with it...it plays all my DVD and HQ Bluray rips (some over 12GB in size) over wireless from one end of the house to the other without so much as a hiccup...if that's mainly all you're looking to do, as I was, you will be supremely happy. I hope it comes back in stock and is not being discontinued...as I would like to buy more.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Does exactly what I needed it to.

Cons: Internet browser doesn't do flash, so no Hulu.

Other Thoughts: I got this for my dad for Christmas so he could stream Netflix and watch some of my digital content. It does all of this without any issues. Netflix has worked every time, it plays all video formats from my USB hard drive, and it even played a 1080p movie streaming from my laptop.
I'm not sure why people are having so many issues with this device, it's done exactly what we needed it to since day 1, I'm about to buy another for my apartment.

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad, Could Be Better

Pros: Supports Netflix category browsing based on "what you would like" as well as instant queue. Plays ISOs, MP4 and MPG. HDMI support. DVD ISO backups play just as if on a DVD player. Wifi works fine using the suggested Zonet wifi USB adapter. Much cheaper than a HTPC and offers more network streaming features compared to options from a $100 network-capable Blu-Ray Player. Better media format support than the Roku for disc images in addition to compressed video files.

Cons: Could support a couple more mainstream media formats. Won't play Windows AVI and that's just odd to me considering most content on Windows is encoded into AVI when it's initially ripped or recorded. The CPU is annoyingly slow for the money. It takes a couple of minutes to boot, then it takes a minute or so to detect network shares. The Netflix takes about a minute to load too. Don't be a in hurry when using the VMP75 or you'll get flustered.

Other Thoughts: I took my time reading network player reviews and specs online, and on NewEgg, for several weeks. I eventually settled on the VMP75. Keyword there; I -settled- on it. There are no perfect black boxes that offer proper clients for Hulu -and- Netflix in addition to supporting all of the media and disc image formats out there. Build an HTPC if you want broad capabilities. I wanted a maintenance free Netflix device that supports category browsing and instant queue along with a few multimedia file formats and DVD ISO playback. The VMP75 fits my needs well for the money. The sluggishness of the processor is probably a factor of the price tag and I'm OK with it. However, I would have happily paid another $50 for a 50% reduction in the boot and app load time.

Hopefully AVI will be supported in a future firmware release because I have a ton of film transfer and DV remastered AVI content.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid Viewsonic at All Cost

Pros: Netflix works fine. On the other hand, a cheaper, better Roku box will do that...

Cons: Viewsonic's technical support is the worst I've ever encountered in 30 years of IT. The until would SEE every computer on my network, see the proper folder, but when told to list media, would invariably return "Network Connection Failed." I do networks for a living and dumbed down my network to the point where the entire city could see my files, and the Viewsonic couldn't. I spent an hour on the phone with a nice lady from technical support, giving all my personal information and troubleshooting it with her by the book. She gave up after an hour and said it would have to go to a higher lever - I'd get an email in 24 hours.
A week later, still not having gotten an email, I emailed Viewsonic technical report, outling the problem. A another week went by. I got an email asking for all my personal information again, so they could open a case. I gave all that, plus the problem description again. Nobody read that email.

Other Thoughts: Their response was to write back ANOTHER week later, with a 3-step solution for fixing my "Netflix problem." The solution had no bearing at all on the problem I had described 3 times over 3 weeks.
Now I know where all those IT blockheads I've fired for incompetence over the last 30 years have gone to work.
Viewsonic: NEVER AGAIN
Newegg: I'll never buy a "replacement-only" warantee product from you again. I now see why this isn't a money-back product - you'd lose your shirts.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: None.

Cons: These sorts of devices (consumer electronics) generally either work well, forever, or have some sort of hardware or software issue. If you're lucky and the company support their product then software issues can be fixed. Hardware issues through ... you get to live with those.

The box failed quickly. Working with Viewsonic has been a nightmare. It took 2.5 weeks and an EECB to get anyone from Viewsonic to respond. I didn't sign up for that ... especially when the Viewsonic website touts their commitment to customer service. The brand doesn't seem to be what it once was.

Stay away. There are other products which do the same thing at the same price point from more mainstream manufacturers.
