1 out of 5 eggsDefective product, Samsung "support" worthless

Pros: When it works, it works reasonably well. The feature set (Netflix, Blockbuster, Pandora) is why I bought it, and within reason those features work OK.

Used an old WRT-54 running DD-WRT in client mode to bypass the stupidly expensive wifi adapter, however.

Cons: Player faults on a regular basis, with the front-panel completely losing (internal) comms with the main board. Happens mostly after a Netflix pause timeout/poweroff. Sometimes it can be resurrected by power-cycling repeatedly via remote, many times needs a complete power disconnect to have a prayer at getting it back.

Problem is, Samsung knows about it, these reviews are (after I bought it) full of everybody with the same problem. However, despite the "1yr labor" listed on Newegg's description, Samsung cops out by claiming 3 months on labor. In order to fix the unit they want $50 labor.

Now here's the main problem: it's been doing this from the day I bought it. I put up with it initially on the assumption it was a firmware bug that was going to get fixed. Nope, it's a manufacturing defect, and they're refusing to fix it without charging me to do so. That's outright dishonest, and as a result I will no longer purchase any Samsung equipment of any type.

Other Thoughts: Even when working "properly", there's a faulty automatic gain on picture brightness, somewhere between the BD-P1600 and the T260-HD. As a result, when the movie gets darker, the picture compensates *the wrong way*, making it almost completely black.

OTOH, Newegg is doing what they can to make this right, confirming why I go with Newegg when I have a chance.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Worked great for a short time.

Cons: Lasted about a year. I even bought the wireless system. What a waste.

Other Thoughts: I will never buy Samsung products again. Replaced it with a Phillips. Very Happy now.

4 out of 5 eggsOK for a Blu Ray Player

Pros: Its is very pretty, it's picture & sound are awesome. It very easy to use. If your looking for just a blu ray player with netflix & pandora I would recommend this unit.

Cons: I found the remote response is sluggish. I also had to tweak the settings to get a better picture & wrestle a little with the network settings. I had won a Sony player a month after I bought this & was blown away with the amount of streaming content Sony offered compared to this one, I could also could control the sony with my iPhone. the sony also did not need to be tweaked to work at full HD & the network was picked right up. This samsung unit is now in my bedroom.

Other Thoughts: if you look in the right places, you can catch these units refurbished for under $100, I paid $80 w/shipping for mine. Well worth the money but if your spending $150 I say go with the lower end Sony player & get more bang for a buck.

1 out of 5 eggs*update*

Pros: None

Cons: After talking to Samsung over the phone, and discussing this known issue with it not loading correctly (if you start it and it stays on load, it wont work, have to power off/on until it says no disc) they want me to pay to have it serviced. If you check reviews, a lot of people have this issue, but according to Samsung, it's the internet, people can say anything.

Other Thoughts: Done with their products altogether..

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible known issues

Pros: Netflix, Pandora

Cons: Wont start correctly, says load until you power off, then back on, continue to do so until it says no disc, now you can use your remote, or watch a movie. This is a known issue by Samsung, and they are charging people labor to repair them.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: The description was exactly what we were looking for. A second BD player to put on our smaller tv in the "other" room. Our main TV has a PS3, which works very nicely.

Cons: Nothing but problems with this unit. Takes FOREVER to load a disc. doesn't listen to any commands from the remote except for power on / off.

Other Thoughts: I think it's been too long to do anything about this, but perhaps this information will stop someone else from wasting their money.

1 out of 5 eggsSimply Awful Blu-ray Player

Pros: - Streams Netflix, Pandora, and Youtube.
- Plays burned DVDs, including DVD+DL.
- Good image quality.

Cons: - Doesn't play DVD+RW discs.
- Doesn't play video files such as AVI, MPG, etc.
- Claims to play JPG files but I haven't gotten it to do so.
- Slow start up.
- Extremely sensitive remote sensor. I frequently have to press buttons on the remote numerous times to get a response.
- Wireless 'ready' means you have to buy your own adapter. Worse, you're stuck with Samsung's VERY expensive proprietary adapter.
- No hard drive for BD-LIVE content. Which isn't much of a con as BD-LIVE is pretty useless.
- Absolutely hideous navigation structure, particularly for BD-LIVE.
- Does not support PC streaming.
- Whenever I start a movie, the first second or two of audio is cut off.
- Frequent, random skips on brand new discs.
- 'Stop' button on remote is situated between 'Play' and 'Reverse'. I've accidentally stopped a movie while trying to replay a scene many times, which meant I had to start the film all over again.
- Remote won't work with my Panasonic HDTV.
- So bad that 1000 ch

Other Thoughts: I used my 1000 character limit in the 'Cons' section. That should tell you something.

My unit is actually a Samsung BD-P1590, which is the same unit as the P1600 only without the hinged door on the front of the unit.

I received this Blu-ray player as a Christmas gift 5 months ago and I already feel like I've overpaid. There is so much to dislike about this Blu-ray player that I'm already making plans to replace it. I'll most likely just give this one away as it's not worth selling.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY THIS

Pros: _WHEN_ it works, it is a perfectly competent BD and dvd player.

Cons: The firmware upgrade process for this (BDP1600) and other Samsung players is HORRIBLY buggy and defective. Firmware updates are mandatory, and have a high chance of completely bricking your player. Even when instructions are followed perfectly, there is still a chance for your unit to get bricked. At this point nothing can be done to unbrick the unit aside from sending it back to Samsung on your own dime, while they may or may not even fix the problem. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Other Thoughts: Go to the CNET forums and do a search for "BD-P1600 Firmware Upgrade Failed" to read the huge thread about this issue.

Samsung has even acknowledged the problem but has done nothing about it. A class action lawsuit is being considered.

1 out of 5 eggsskippy the macroblocker

Pros: This player has such great potential-Pandora, Netflix and Blockbuster streaming are awesome and work great. (Youtube, which is also included, is kind of lame for TVs).

Cons: For playing discs this thing is just awful. Brand new blurays seem to skip even if they are just slightly smudged. And DVDs if they are even a little bit scuffed up, become almost unplayable. I would say I have never played a disc that did not skip at least a few times. Two thirds of the time you end up missing parts of the movie even if you take out the disc and clean it carefully. Skipping, macroblocking and freezups have been constant companions since I got this thing.

When I compare that kind of behavior to my old workhorse dvd players I've had over the years it's just pathetic. Probably this particular unit has alignment issues or something, I suppose.

I really only realized the player was a piece of garbage after about a month and a half of use. Too late to return it. (I didn't buy it at newegg)

Other Thoughts: Luckily my credit card company has an extra two month return policy, and have agreed to take it back, so I am going to get rid of it and try a Sony BDP N460.

I am disappointed because this player had everything going for it on paper

2 out of 5 eggsFailed at 8 months

Pros: Good appearance, streaming Netflix/Blockbuster/Youtube/Pandora media. Easy set-up, links with other Samsung products. Worked great for the first 8 months.

Cons: Stopped working at 8 months. While I can still stream content from Netflix/etc, the player has refused to play physical BLU-Ray movies for the last several weeks. Attempting to get ahold of Samsung support is proving frustrating.

Other Thoughts: Here's hoping the eventual fix or replacement product repairs my opinion of Samsung. If its doesn't, they have plenty of competition.
