4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Speaker looked new and worked

Cons: I wonder what refurbish really means, unit operates slightly different than specified by the instructions.

Other Thoughts: The instructions say the LED goes red when speaker is "off" in automatic on mode. The light just goes out, but does automatically come on when a signal demands the subwoofer.

1 out of 5 eggsYeah, uh.....

Pros: Well, if you don't have a subwoofer, and your book shelf speakers have a woofer smaller than 4" and you don't want loud, room shaking bass, and you just need some filler bass, and you live in an apartment above an older person who doesn't want to hear your music, then go ahead and get this.

Cons: VERY VERY light weight. Good if you have a bad back. Bad if you want a powerful sound. Amp also sticks out the back so make sure you have clearance for air to cool it, if it ever gets hot. All controls are on the back. So to make any adjustments, you need to be able to reach the back. Not very loud. Frequencies have many flat spots.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't consider myself and "audiophile" but I do like good sound. That being said, I like to turn it up. I wanted to replace a 4" Sharper Image subwoofer that I got like 15 years ago for $20 (refurbished). It has been a good sub, rattles stuff, doesn't shake the walls down, but puts out a good sound. But after hearing a $100 Sony sub at (a popular brick and mortar electronics store that I'm not allowed to mention here) many years ago, I was really impressed. Over the years I had been looking into building my own. Either using a Sonotube, or just a regular box. I looked up the price of everything, sub, amp stuff like that and thought at that point, why not save the hassle and time, and just buy one. That idea got sent to the back burner. So when I saw this I was really happy. Brand new it was $120 or so, and I read many good reviews. When it showed up I picked up the box, and was really surprised by how light it was. The amp alone should have weighed more. Opened up the box, took a look at it. No damage, no major scratches. I thought, "Cool, let's hook this thing up!" I was happy that you could run speakers off of this so if I ever upgraded, I could still find a use for it, somewhere. I unhooked the old sub, hooked this one up and didn't hear much. Then I unhooked it, and the book shelf speakers that I have which are old Realistic (Radio Shack) with 4" woofers, they put out the same amount of bass. I hooked the old sub up to see if maybe a cable came loose. WOW! So much better. Just like before. I couldn't believe this. So I double checked all of the connections, from the TV to the speakers (5.1 system) to the settings on the amp. I changed out cables, thinking that the one that came with the Sony was no good. I put it in the corner trying to use the acoustics of the room to help. I messed with levels and everything else and finally got it just about as loud as my original 4" sub. The only way to even hear it was to turn the volume knob all the way up, and then turn the crossover all the way down. But there were so many flat spots and there was almost no bottom end. I was using mostly rock and rap music to test it. Like some Guns and Roses, some Metallica, some Ice Cube Some Iggy Azaela, and some Eminem. then I tried some movies. Then I played some games. I know, you're thinking "How loud could a 4" really old Sharper Image subwoofer be?" That's why I was so surprised with this Sony sub. Really disappointing. So now I hooked back up the 4" sub, re-adjusted everything, and will wait to find another good deal on another sub. I'm just not going to look for too good of a deal!

5 out of 5 eggsThis thing REALLY thumps!

Pros: This Sony subwoofer really sounds GREAT!

My surround system didn't have an RCA output for a subwoofer, so I spliced the original subwoofer cable to the input of the amp to one of the left speaker inputs, then I ran my original subwoofer to the left speaker outputs on the Sony subwoofer. The sound of the bass frequencies are amazing! The Sony Subwoofer made all the difference!

Cons: None so far, just got it today and hooked it up.

Other Thoughts: I have been an electronics technician since 1974 and this was the only way I could connect the Sony Subwoofer to my Panasonic 5.1 surround sound amplifier which had a much smaller and less powerful subwoofer. The way I have it connected, the bass from the Sony subwoofer is controlled by my Panasonic surround system. The bass increases when I turn up the volume on the surround system. I can also control the amount of bass going to the Sony subwoofer by adjusting the volume and amount of bass going to the Sony subwoofer through my surround system. This way I don't have to manually adjust the Sony subwoofer everytime I play something that's louder on the DVD or Blu-Ray disk I am listening to.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value and service

Pros: Free shipping within 30 hours of placing order
Best price ANYWHERE
Good quality
Attractive casing

Cons: Can't find any cons so far

Other Thoughts: Bought this from Newegg as a refurbished unit for 55.00, to add to my new Vizio 2.0 Sound Stand that I bought from WM for 98.00 (was 148.00). The Sound Stand has a sub out RCA jack that I was curious to try out without spending a lot of money. The sound and build quality of the Sony sub is fairly impressive, ESPECIALLY when you consider it was free shipping, and only 55.00 Ordered Monday morning, delivered Tuesday afternoon. What's there NOT to like? The sub and Sound Stand together are perfect together.

5 out of 5 eggsjust got one

Pros: -Awesome bang for the buck\
-Has a front speaker pass through - if you don't have a sub out on the amp

Cons: -Won't turn off with the rest of the stereo system (And the power button is on the bottom in the back of it)
-You want to put this thing under a table, looks good from front but has an ugly heatsink and amp on the back

Other Thoughts: Just bought one for 98 bucks in wm

4 out of 5 eggsSony SA-W2500 subwoofer

Pros: Sounds very good as fill; silent off/on (can't hear relay unless you're really close); pleasantly tweakable integration with other components; even fits in a lower kitchen cabinet (neat experiment for doing dishes...hehe.)

Cons: For more critical listening, needs a tad of pillow stuffing and an internal brace (even a piece of broom handle works and worth the trouble); for organ contrabass, you only get a hint of the lowest register, but that's ok with me.

Other Thoughts: For small/medium spaces and ganging up - it's just hard to beat. When I get some more $$, I'll proly get another ;) NOTE: It does NOT seem to cut off the regular speakers' frequency response (high pass) when you use the speaker level inputs vs. the line level. IOW, the full signal passes through to your L & R. I haven't verified this with larger speakers or a scope, though. Sounds best near the wall with the speaker facing out from center and the port facing in right to center when you use two.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

Pros: I have one (paid $100 for it 3 years ago), and I recently picked up a second on newegg as a refurbished unit for $70 with free shipping. i thought it was a great value for $100, but when i saw that they were selling one for $70 i picked up a second one to run both on a 7.2 sound system, music and movies sound great. it is weak in certain points, but having two subs running at once makes up for that. plus if you have the room, two subs looks better than one.

Cons: nothing besides the weaknesses in bass in certain frequencies.

Other Thoughts: as long as your not an audiophile (in which case you wouldnt even consider this sub in the first place) this is an incredible subwoofer. the two tens shake my whole apartment! I don't think I could find a better value, Two ten inch subwoofers for $170.

2 out of 5 eggsNot worth it

Pros: It's pretty loud sometimes, and in exactly the right conditions. Mine hasn't died yet. It has lasted over 4 years.

Cons: For the price, this is one of the worst subwoofers you can get. For $130 you can get a Dayton Audio Sub-1200 which can hit down to 25Hz. Can you believe that this Sony sub can only get down to 35Hz?? (I've tested it) And it's super quiet and distorted at those frequencies. Not only that but it there is a range of Hz from about 50-60Hz where not much sound comes out at all. It makes listening to drops in music just awful.

I wanted to ephisize that this subwoofer is for very small rooms. If you are more than 6 feet away from the sub, you can't feel anything unless you crank the volume. If you do that though it unreliably will output. It will sound way overbearing, or it seems like you can't hear it at all and you wonder who unplugged the subwoofer.

Do yourself a favor and get something better than this. Even the Dayton sub-1000, or sub-800. HECK, Go buy a Polk PSW10 - it's not a good sub at all, but it will run circles around this.

Other Thoughts: Do your homework before buying a subwoofer! Don't get dooped into something you don't like otherwise you'll get upgrade-itis.
