A great processor but....
- Comments: dont get it. it has only 1mb of L2 cashe. get the 4400 or 4800. you can overclock to get more mhz, but u cant do anything to get more cashe. just some advice.
Great value...well worth it
- Pros: I've had this for over a month now. Went from an A64 3000 to this. Games run better. No hiccups when virus scanning and doing anything else. Price drop was nice (it was even cheaper when I purchased it a month ago). Runs cool. Heatsink is effective. I also got a new (quality) case to go with it which probably helps as well.
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: It's a good processor for sure. Real world multitasking should improve but don't expect miracles. I haven't done the "run as many demanding apps at once" torture test as others have, so I can't offer any input on the X2 4600 in that respect.
I installed the AMD driver, MS hotfix, and D/C optimizer. No issues but I haven't been able to discern any difference in performance with them vs. without them. Nevertheless I kept them installed.

GREAT
- Pros: This thing is nice. Running @ 2.5 (had to drop multiplyer to run my gskill @ 500mhz) No problems with multitasking very stable @2.5
- Cons: Sometimes games are a little choppy now but setting the affinity works great. Not really happy with the stock cooler but oh well what can youdo but buy another one. Not that impressed with its performance over my 3700 @ 2.5 but cannot really complain too much because this proc feels very solid and stable(but thats AMD for you)
- Other Thoughts: Running on my epox nforce4 ultra board with 2 gigs of Gskill(please get more gskill pc4000 newegg)my x850xt is my bottleneck get the ati utility that manages the processing because some games will be a little choppy (NEW EGG = AWESOME)
A Screamer
- Pros: This processor rocks. I upgraded from an Athlon 64 3000+/motherboard. This processor shows me what my BFG 7900GS PCI-E video card can do. Every game I throw at it runs smooth as silk. Gaming is such a pleasure now. Call of Duty 2 runs like a dream with everything max'd, same with Oblivion. DVD Shrink performance is superb.
- Cons: The only con I can think of is that I didn't upgrade to this processor sooner.
- Other Thoughts: Buy this now, while still available as socket 939 systems are a dying breed these days.
Dual Core Goodness
- Pros: Gotta love dual core chips. Made everything faster, obviously. Easy to install.
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: no freebies!

Highlights
 |
AMD64 Dual-core Technology AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With dual-core technology there are two complete processor cores in one physical package running at the same frequency to deliver TRUE multi-tasking power, allowing users to switch from one program to another without pausing for the computer to catch up and reducing annoying processing pauses.
|
 |
HyperTransport Technology HyperTransport Technology (HT or HTT) is a high-speed, low latency, point-to-point link designed to increase communication speeds between integrated circuits in computers, servers, embedded systems, and networking and telecommunications equipment. The Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Socket 939 processor is equipped with HT technology to enable a system bus speed of up to 2000MHz, delivering a maximum of 8GB/s I/O bandwidth and 14.4GB/s processor-to-system bandwidth.
|
 |
CNQ: Cool'n'Quiet Technology AMD's Cool'n'Quiet technology is an innovative solution available on AMD Athlon 64 processor-based systems that can effectively lower the power consumption and enable a quieter-running system while delivering performance-on-demand.
|
 |
Enhanced Virus Protection All AMD processors equipped with AMD64 technology are Enhanced Virus Protection-enabled. Enhanced virus protection acts as a preventative measure causing the virus to be localized, short-lived, and non-contagious, eventually being flushed from system memory.
